| [#6021] Paganini - Hahn Paganini - Hahn This is a well prepared CD for both Performers and Recording, The dialogue and the tempo between the violinist and Orchestra is magnificent. Hahn sings tuneful voice with her violin, esp on the Allegro maestoso/cadenza, Her lyrical phasing is not colourful, but beautiful and inspirational, clean and clear. This interpretation is extremly high level compare with her "Mozart & Mendelssohn violin pieces'. Love at first sight! |

| [#6036] VPO/Gergiev 24/09/2006 VPO/Gergiev/Shostakovich/Brahms CCCH Sat close to my usual seats. Packed house. The least number of empty seats I’ve ever seen in the CCCH (I didn’t go to the BPO due to Rattle). Few children, and a very captive and appreciative audience. As there is no need to sing praise for the VPO, I shall try to be brief, but it would be hard. Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” received a vigorous treatment, and the power of the orchestra and the drive of the conductor was already evident. The Shostakovich was a marvel. The orchestra played with great colors. I had heard the (badly recorded) S9 of Gergiev/Rotterdam (Philips), and it did not prepare me for this reading. As usual with Gergiev, he gave prominence to, nay, threatened with the bass line. The image that came to my mind was a lumbering giant with one bad foot. Most importantly, there was sardonic wit, and an almost, but not quite farcial element. Hesitation, about-turn and phantasm, yes, that’s the game. This symphony is not easy to bring off, and most do not come close to tonight’s reading. In its deliberately detached way, it brought the underlying tragedy close to home, more than most readings I’ve heard. To me, this is a valedictory reading. I had to calm down for the Brahms 4th. Given the history, actually the VPO surprisingly has had very few truly great recordings of Brahms, less so than the BPO. I was anxious; on the other hand, I was eager to hear Brahms under Gergiev. The classics are not what the recording companies would let Gergiev, the “Russian specialist”, do. Are we ever to get a Beethoven cycle from him? I doubt it. Yet…yet I think a truly great conductor’s range is broad. Anecdote: I borrowed from the library the complete Brahms symphonies of the Polish Rowicki and the Russian Kondrashin, and both cycle proved to be colossal and granitic efforts, though ignored by the west. With this kind of thought in my mind, I went in for the second half. The opening of the 1st movement was very beautiful, and Gergiev, as with the S9, showed tremendous grasp of structure and always gave a sense of purpose. Towards the end, he really puntuacted things and I liked it very much. In the slow movement, my companion said it was like dialogue on a cloud. The scherzo was less noticeable, but without a pause the opening of the fourth movement was stunning with full chording of the winds followed by the trombones. The nobility of such moments are what the VPO do best. Overall I thought the last movement was the best, with incredible details and passion. How much was the VPO and how much Gergiev? What makes the VPO special? The special instruments, on which the programme book gave a special treatment? Partly. The skills? Of course world class. But I think there is a lot more. First is commitment and joy and pride, you see it in them, quite unlike the usual jargon. They are the only premier orchestra that gave 200% short of the Russian ones. Hey, not jet lag here! Second is the way they listen to each other. They chord perfectly, phrases tossed off each other like dialogues. Things just go on, and no gear change or mood shift sound unnatural. They bring life to each phrase and leave you no little room for doubt (unless they want you to). What of Gergiev? He is the big drama by himself. Taut, not sentimental, he’ll not cheapen things. He shows you the tiniest details yet move on. And there is a verbal quality in his song. Some may doubt whether the Shostakovich is “Russian” enough and not over-refined; I don’t. Some may think the Brahms lacked angst, but I accept it on his terms. To me, this is a great combo. I’ve heard the VPO in Carnegie a lot, but I can say this one concert is as good as anyone of them. Yes, overall the VPO is a little less fulsome than in the 70’s/80’s (I heard them in Carnegie Hall)(particularly in the chording), yet it seems even more spontaneous. Bruckner’s 4th under Abbado was perfect but dull. Truly great were the Mahler 7 under Bernstein and Abbado. But tonight’s S9 and B4 stood on their own. Gergiev too. Salute. Some tidbits: Before the concert I was in HK Records and they were playing the Chinese edition DVD of Gergiev rehearsing Prokofiev’s Scythian Suite with the Rotterdam. Wow, excellent English and he described visually his conception. The orchestra was partially nonplussed but I think for the very cheap price ($3x) it is eminently worthwhile. Mind you, no complete performance, just rehearsal and a little talk, but GREAT! And at 7:30 I immersed myself in the outdoor telecast. The preview showed an arthritic Karajan presiding over a very beautiful performance of the Largo from Dvorak’s 9th, followed by the Blue Danube. A different era. The outdoor atmosphere was GREAT. If you do not have tickets, go early and get a seat (rather a spot on the ground)! I assure you the atmosphere is no less than inside. This was a great thing, and they should do it more, for some special HKPO concerts and stuff like that. Just do it more! Maybe show a few old movies? Dance? |
