[#6043] VPO Anyone went? Any comments? -------------------------------------- 25/09/2006 VPO/Gergiev/Mozart/Tchaikovsky CCCH (as heard in the Piazza Relay) This time I was demoted and had to listen outdoors. Less people than the previous night. I sat down on the table mat provided by the venue (they also provided a programme book!) and caught the last video of Karajan conducting the Blue Danube, good footage, but the dance/choreography was not very well presented. Sound was a bit distorted/overloaded at loud passages. The video stopped and as we waited for the feed to begin, we caught about 10 minutes of the laser show, especially the patterns projected on the curved long exterior wall of the CCCH. Beautiful clear sky, the graceful clock tower and swaying trees. Who can say the CCCH is not beautiful? The feed came. There is only one shot throughout. No panning, no camera on stage. A rather distant view from behind the viola’s, I’d say seat number around 150. There really is nothing much to say about the excellent and tautly delivered Mozart “Linz” symphony. I think the woodwind chording was even better than the previous night. I liked in particular some of the almost coquettish string playing in the Minuetto and the fleet and strong finale. A friend inside had reservations about the tympanist (apparently different person from the second half). I slipped out during the interval to rest my sore arse and to get some beer from 711. My neighbors took out some sandwiches and enjoyed themselves. There should be a lot of different views on the Tchaikovsky Fifth, especially since the VPO/Gergiev Salzburg live recording should be familiar to a lot of people and available for comparison. As usual for Gergiev, it was a dramatic, widely dynamic but unsentimental recording, with prominent bass line. In the andante, a magpie shot across the sky, its fleeting shadow cast upon the illuminated wall of the hall, perhaps Tchaikovsky sent him? I particularly liked the last two movements. In the Valse, the palms seemed to be nodding towards the composer. The wondrously full and dynamic bass of the VPO gave an inexorable feeling to the finale Has time changed, as there was mercifully no premature applause at the brief pause towards the end? A friend thought the Tchaikovsky perfect but the previously night’s Brahms lacking in angst. Some may feel the opposite or may harbour reservations for both. But there should be little complaint for the way it was played, with total concentration and attention to the smallest details. For me I liked it and it held my attention all the way through. The recording had sometimes been criticized for its slow tempo and rubato, but with the live feed, I was not even aware. Today in the bedroom, where my computer is, I listened to the recording a little and the performance last night seemed faster in the opening movement and slower in the concluding one. But as we know, “live” aural memory about tempo is often inaccurate. I’ll try listening again on the big system later. The house was brought down. Three encores were played, a little bit from the Sleeping Beauty, a little-heard (for me) Strauss waltz and a short bon-bon. I think they were even better than the encores the previous night. The feed stopped abruptly and it was announced Gergiev would meet the outside audience at Piazza C (during the concert reserved for students and parents etc who had tickets), around the steps outside 映月樓. A female host was directing things in the typical HK way during the wait. Two mikes were set up for Gergiev and a representative of the VPO. The pair regaled out, and the children and parents said “Welcome to Hong Kong” in a pale chorus. Five brass players played a little Austrian folk tune, but the unamplified sound was largely lost. A few courteous words and they bade farewell, saying they had to catch the 6 am flight to Sydney the next day. Overall it was a tepid affair. My friends inside said no announcement was made to the audience inside. I think they should have; the result would have been better had more inside audience joined. That was the only failure of the live relay. For the concert, only a few small PA speakers were used for a large outdoor area, yet, surprisingly, most of the music came through. And came through TRUTHFULLY as well. The speaker closest to me was a Ramsa 2-way, with a tweeter horn and small woofer. The tonal balance was slightly lean yet reasonably accurate. One still heard the athletic strings, the menacing bass, the full tympani and the glorious brass. Only the woodwinds were a tad recessed. As importantly, the dynamic swings were faithfully conveyed, slashing attacks, superbly gauged crescendos and all. The DVDs previously played had sharper sound but I think the live feed was more truthful and certainly caught the hall ambience. In conveying the message, the outdoor feed completely eclipsed most high-end “hi-fi” music systems, as set-up by music illiterates (the majority unfortunately). The outdoor audience, rather young, was lovely. Surprisingly, as inside, you could hear a pin drop. No mobile even rang out. And they clapped hands just like they were inside. My neighbors were nice young men who could not afford the tickets, but what one of them said should serve as a reminder for many of us: “音樂最緊耍講 Feel” (The most important thing about music is the feel). The government and organizations should do this kind of thing more often. A hugh amount of money subsidizes these super bands. Even the most expensive tickets are heavily subsidized. The average taxpayer should get something in return.

[#6046] Classical Music Newsgroup I'd like to bring to people's attention to a VERY useful newsgroup on classical music in Hong Kong. It is a high-content-value and low-noise group. I contribute as much as I can and I hope people will to. I have gotten much more from it than I can ever contribute towards it. I am very grateful for its existence. Here: http://apps.i-cable.com/dnews/main.html?topic=music.classical If you still remember how to use traditional usenet, it will be even better. First go to: http://www.freeforum.org/ Then select from the upper right box: 「使用我們的綱頁版」or 「使用傳統的嬝知飽v Then select: 「音樂組」 Then music.classical (not the other one) All my "reviews" were originally posted there, but there are many quality reveiwers there, better than reading the newspaper.

[#6047] Classical Music is Booming High brow & high tech: results of a new Gramophone-commissioned study Far from being fuddy-duddy traditionalists, classical music fans are embracing new technology as never before, new research reveals. Three-quarters of them listen using 21st-century media such as PCs, DAB digital radio, radio via the internet, digital TV and MP3 players, and 57% have 'ripped' (converted to digital format) at least some of their classical CD collection. The survey of classical music buyers was commissioned by Gramophone to mark the Classic FM Gramophone Awards 2006. It reveals the following trends in buyers of classical music: From high-brow to high-tech - 1 in 5 download classical music legally from the internet. - The same number prefer to listen to classical music on their MP3 or other digital music player. - The average number of classical downloads per person in the last year was 12, a fraction less than the average 12.7 CDs purchased. - Downloaders aged over 50 keep in time with younger classical music fans; they each bought an average of 11.5 downloads last year. - 30% of classical music buffs who don't already have an MP3 player say they will buy one in the next year, with another third saying they will do so at some point. Classical music is getting more popular - Classical music is a booming pastime, with 30% of CD buyers saying they'll buy more CDs next year. - 22% say they will start downloading in the next year. - Buying downloads is more likely to stimulate than threaten the CD market, with only 6% of downloaders saying they would buy fewer CDs next year. Listening habits change but old favorites still have a place - Beethoven and Mozart were the most popular choices for a first download. - However, the over-50s showed a penchant for more contemporary music for their first download, with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (who has embraced the digital future with his own web site) emerging as an equal favorite with Beethoven. - Radio emerges as the most trusted source of classical music information, with Classic FM and BBC Radio 3 cited as the most opinion-shaping. Gramophone.co.uk, the online arm of Gramophone magazine, was cited as the second most authoritative source. - In spite of the obvious appeal of new technology, 83% of classical music buyers still listen to traditional audio equipment, such as CD players, and 74% tune into AM/FM radio for classical listening. "These findings overturn our preconceptions about the kind of person who buys and listens to classical music," says Gramophone Editor-in-Chief James Jolly. "All ages actively enjoy classical music, with the over-50s showing themselves to be particularly dynamic. Not only do they prove that they have considerable purchasing power, buying more CDs — an average of 17 a year — than any other age group, but they are also technologically adept. We can see a whole new group of mature MP3 listeners — "iPod oldies", perhaps — emerging who are far from old in their outlook."

[#6056] A. Scarlatti One day we'll run out of Baroque music worth rediscovering, but for the moment there seems no reason to halt the digging, esp. when a composer as talented and prolific as Alessandro Scarlattiremains so largely buried.... The Vocal writing, for a full range of voice-types, sparkles like summer wine...... Likewise joyously inspired is the preforamce under dedicated direction of Fabio Biondi, a Scarlatti interpreter of experience and flair who drive the work forward with unerring momentum, energy and care. Learding from violin, he summons orchestral playing of vibrancy and energy, and is blessed with Top-Class Baroque Singer, strongly communicative and evidently believing in music. It is hard to imagine this work beging better performed or present......(Gramophone guide 2006) http://www.virginclassics.com/vclass-cgi-bin/frame_artists.cgi?key=13 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00022GJRE?v=glance I have no intention to buy this CD, but it just happens ..very happy. My recommendation to all Classical Fans. HK$6x only. ![]()
