On the left: Schumann: Papillons, op. 2# Schumann: Introduction and Allegro appassionato for Piano and Orchestra, op. 92* Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 21 in B flat major, D.960 Sviatoslav Richter / English Chamber Orchestra* / Benjamin Britten* [1963, 1965, 1964] BBC (Legends) BBCL 4196-2: ADD (mono/stereo#) 2006 On the right: Schubert: Piano Sonatas Nos. 6, D.566; 9, D.575; 19, D.958; 21, D.960 / Hüttenbrenner Variations, D.576 Sviatoslav Richter [1964, 1966, 1958, 1964, 1969] Living Stage LS 347.11: ADD (mono) 1999 (2 CDs) They are the same mono recording of a live performance at the Aldeburgh Festival on 20 June 1964. I think I can feel a slight improvement in the latest transfer from BBC: greater impact, more cleanly focused, though still rather opaque. All of them are, I mean all my 7 CDs with Richter playing this work are disappointing in terms of recorded sound. For instance, we find this in the BBC CD booklet: "As this is a live recording, some extraneous noises from passing cars and aircraft have been impossible to remove completely from the Schubert Piano Sonata D960." Oh, dear! But ... Richter's playing is most deeply felt, very expressive and moving. Above all, so unbearably sad yet so beautiful 無限痛苦但美麗. Superb.  |

| [#6110] Liszt Transcriptions The cover rings a bell. I have listened to a library copy of this Hperion CD. Very accessible music, and the piano sound is rich and clear. Have you tried Howard's "Schubert and Weber Transcriptions" and "Liszt at the Opera" in the same series? |

| [#6114] Schwarzkopf Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Sings Operetta Philharmonia Orchestra / Otto Ackermann [1957] EMI Mine is the first CD appearance (CDC 7 47284 2) which is not to had anymore. But this glorious account was re-issued some years ago in EMI's mid-price "Great Recordings of the Century series" (5 67004 2). The "Nuns' Chorus" from "Casanova" (by Johann Strauss) is a voice straight from Heaven. |

In EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" series, you will find Schwarzkopt in Cosi fan Tutte (Karajan & Bohm), Don Giovanni (Giulini), Le nozze di Figaro (Karajan), Magic Flute (Klemperer), Die Fledermaus (Karajan), Vie Letzte Lieder (Szell), Ariadne auf Naxos (Karajan), Capriccio (Sawallisch), Der Rosenkavalier (Karajan) ... All are celebrated recordings. |
