| [#6494] Mozart Piano Quartets I forgot whether it was in these pages that trollope talked about the versions of Mozart's piano quartets. I just heard this one, borroweed from the library. I am surprised that an ensemble that is not so refined can win praise. Yet another over-rated chamber ensemble.  |

| [#6495] Mozart Piano Quartets After the disappointment with the DG, I took out my $30 copy of EMI Encore and listened again. I have always liked Zacharias in Mozart. This CD is immaculately played but a little cool emotionally, but after the DG it certainly is music to the ears!  |

| [#6496] Brahms Piano Quartets By chance I saw this 2-CD Japanese RCA set and grabbed it immediately. This surely is a "collector's item". The Festival Quartet (Szymon Goldberg, William Primrose, Nikolai Graudan with pianist Victor Babin) play the 3 piano quartets of Brahms and Schubert's trout. Goldberg's violin has a refined and 了了下 quality. Mesmerizing. Babin is better known as half of the justly famous Babin and Vronsky (wife) piano duo (beautiful Rachmaninov). His playing is immaculate. The trout is wonderful, Goldberg's playing almost pictorial. The Brahms set were ravishingly played too. Overall these played are very refined, not for those who like more fire.  |

| [#6497] Brahms Piano Quartets Then by chance I saw a used Chandos set of Brahms piano quartets played by my favorite Borodin Trio (+ violist Rivka Golani) and grabbed it too. Wow, these fellows never disappoint. Big, organic playing that completely displays Brahms complex emotions. I was so excited I called a friend and played her a little of that first quartet on the phone. We wondered why the Russians in general play Brahms so well. She said she feels Brahms is really not so German and closer to Russian in his inner world; that's food for thought indeed and I believe her.  |
