[#6541] 回覆(40):Kabalevsky Cello Concert No.1 After years of searching on Kabalevsky Cello Concerto No.1, I finally get a 2nd recording (by Vectomov/Valek) to accompany the lonely Ma/Ormandy recording. According to website below, there is not many recording on the piece. Except from Ma, I don't see any available one in a local shop. http://home.wanadoo.nl/ovar/kabaopus.htm Opus 49: Cello Concerto No. 1 in G minor (1948-1949) LP Panton 8110 0076: Czechoslovak Radio SO, V. Valek (cond), S. Vectomov (cello) CD Brilliant Classics 93096 (7 CD-set): Great Symphony Orchestra, Dmitri Kabalevsky (cond), Daniel Shafran (cello) CD CBS CD 37840: Philadelphia Orchestra, E. Ormandy (cond), Yo-Yo Ma (cello) CD Sony Classical CD 37840: Philadelphia Orchestra, E. Ormandy (cond), Yo-Yo Ma (cello) CD Naxos 8.553788: Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Igor Golovschin (cond), Alexander Rudin (cello) CD Olympia OCD 292: Symphony Orchestra of Russia, Veronika Dudarova (cond), Marina Tarasova (cello) CD Omega Classics OCD 1026: USSR State SO, Dmitri Kabalevsky (cond), Daniel Shafran (cello) (recording: 1952) CD Regis RRC 1116: Symphony Orchestra of Russia, Veronika Dudarova (cond), Marina Tarasova (cello) About Vectomov, recording is more biased to the soloist where detail of cello can be clearly heard. As a whole, cello and orchestra is more forward than the one of Ma. Ma's recording is better balanced. Vectomov's first movement allegro is too slow, 7 min 48 sec vs Ma's 6 min 09 sec. His playing in 2nd movement is very expressive. The last movement opens with clarinet then followed by the soloist. Woodwind together with Ma's total color brings a somber and mysterious atmosphere which is charming. In the march like tutti before coda, Vectomov's recording lacks the drum which makes his recording less promising. Clarinet and cello return to begin the coda, the concerto ends after passage of cello virtuosity. Unlike the energy and confident in Ma's recording, maybe due to recording level of precussion, Vectomov's sounds like a 漏氣車呔. ![]()

[#6542] 回覆(40):Kabalevsky Cello Concert No.1 Hello Eric, I think I've read somewhere that Kabalevsky is widely held as "the ideal Soviet composer", if you see what that means. Have you listened to his piano music, like those short pieces for children and his 2nd Piano Concerto?

[#6543] 回覆(40):Kabalevsky Cello Concert No.1 Hello Trollope, About Kabalevsky, I have only listened to his Cello Concerto No.1. May be it is time for me to re-visit his Cello Concerto No.2 CD which I consider hard-listening and exposure myself to his other works. Personally, I find the tune in Cello Concerto No.1 very "Russian", in particular the 1st & 3rd movement. Or simply, easy-listening. "the ideal Soviet composer"?? "His post-war works reflected the official policy of ‘Socialist realism’." from http://www.classicalarchives.com/bios/codm/kabalevsky.html "Dmitry Kabalevsky wrote for all musical genres; his pieces were all faithful to the ideals of Soviet realism as well." from http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Lib/Kabalevsky-Dmitry.htm

[#6545] 回覆(40):Kabalevsky Cello Concert No.1 Eric: -CD Brilliant Classics 93096 (7 CD-set): Great Symphony Orchestra, Dmitri Kabalevsky (cond), Daniel Shafran (cello) -CD Regis RRC 1116: Symphony Orchestra of Russia, Veronika Dudarova (cond), Marina Tarasova (cello) Both of these can probably be found in SHUN CHEONG, the distributor for these labels. The Shafran box is eminently worthwhile. He's a GREAT cellist. -CD Naxos 8.553788: Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Igor Golovschin (cond), Alexander Rudin (cello) This should not be hard to find. HK Records (TST/Kowloon Tong) should have it. Of course Rostropovich had recorded it, with the same Philadelphia/Ormandy, for EMI, out-of-print though. ![]()

[#6552] Chopin Ballade No.1 Today, listen to Pollini plays Chopin Ballade No.1 in g minor (on a EMI LP, recorded in 1968 ??). His playing is very good. The few chords in contrary motion scale (right hand going down, left hand going up) near the end of coda 非常動聽. "Remember that Piano, So delightful unusual, That classic sensation Sentimental confusion ...." - I Like Chopin, Gazebo
