[#6583] Bach Organ Pieces My first encounter on Chorzempa is his playing of Bach’s Trio Sonatas for Organ. This time, listen to his playing of my favor organ pieces. Toccata in d minor - (a hifi demo piece) and I always wonder organ in Bach's era 可以潛倒幾低. Passacaglia in c minor the "ground bass" in 8 bar is repeated/varied throughout the piece. Analogy to Chopin's Ballades in g minor I noted from "The Pianist", "White Night" draws my attention on Passacaglia. The movie begins with a solo ballet dancer on the stage, accompanied by an orchestral version of Passacaglia until he hanged himself. "Dying Young" is another movie I can recall; there is the famous Tuba passage of Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. ![]()

[#6587] Hilary Hahn concert Eric, you were there, what do you think? My views: 08/06/07 Hahn/HKPO/EdW Brahms/Dvorak CCCH With Hahn’s previous performance of Brahms etched in mind, I eagerly anticipated this. It was almost a full house. Hahn’s playing was, as usual, excellent, though possibly slightly more studied and at a lower temperature than previously. And how could that not have been, given the lethargic accompaniment EdW and the orchestra provided, careful but dull as hell, singularly lacking in substance at anything less than a forte. The slow tempo did not help; even Hahn could not galvanize them, and she tried. Hahn played an andante from a Bach sonata as an encore. After the intermission, EdW turned to the audience to express thanks for the last donation (why is this, I wonder?) of the Lady’s committee, a pair of violins. 2 ladies presented them to 2 first violinists. Then an unusual thing happened. EdW announced an extra piece, >10 minute long “Funeral Music” of Lutoslawski, written for string orchestra in memory of Bartok!!!!!!!!!!! An odd choice, to say the least, for the occasion. I must say I did not mind, though many did. The strings played beautifully. The Dvorak 8th was played well by the orchestra, symphonic and dynamic at times. Alas, it remained incoherent and earthbound, a no-no for Dvorak. EdW still dwells on every tree and loses the forest. He should learn how to conduct Dvorak from Lu Jia. I went with many friends; almost all were bored by the proceedings.

[#6590] Hilary Hahn concert Hello doctorjohn, I was in the concert on Saturday. Hahn's playing was excellent. I and so did my friend, fell asleep occassionally in the slow movement. I'm sure I did not sleep well the night before. Hahn played two encore pieces, a Sarabande by Bach (from one of his Partita) and the other one I'm not quite sure, it was full of double stopping with dialogue between two melodic lines. Again, Hahn's playing was excellent. There was also the Lutoslawski piece after the interval. It was my first listening to this piece and I can still remember the unison passage where everyone in the orchestra played the same notes. About the opening of Dvorak, I will prefer the CD played in the pre-concert talk.

[#6598] Gidon Kremer Hi butcher431 hing, Gidon Kremer, a student of David Oistrakh, the first prize winner in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970. I may not be able to give fair comment on his recordings as I only get a few as below. Personally, I find nothing wrong with his playing but so happen, I have other preference on most of those pieces. For example, Perlman (as listed below) and other masters like Oistrakh. Beethoven Violin Sonata no.5 with Argerich vs Perlman/Ashkenazy Beethoven violin sonata no.7 with Argerich Brahms Violin Concerto with Wiener Philharmoniker/Bernstein vs Perlman/Berliner Philharmoniker/Barenboim Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Berliner Philharmoniker/Lorin Maazel vs Perlman/Israel Philharmonic Orchestra/ Mehta I acquired this 2CD Set recently. http://www.amazon.com/Many-Musics-Gidon-Kremer/dp/B000LC4TIQ/ref=sr_1_9/002-1731557-6666465?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1181580257&sr=1-9
