Elisabeth Schwarzkopf singt Mozart-Arien
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf / Philharmonia Orchestra / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra / John Pritchard / Josef Krips / Karajan
Preiser PR93444: AAD (mono) 2005

How artfully artless!
A pity, no recording dates.

Yvonne Lefmbure [1977 (Schumann), 1979 (Schubert)]
Released by the French label Solstice in 1991

A student of Cortot, Lefmbure's (1898-1986) pupils include Samson François, Dinu Lipatti and Imogen Cooper.

Performance of great sweep from a pianist who is keenly alive to beauty.

Ravel: The Complete Piano Works
Robert Casadesus (piano) / Zino Francescatti (violin) / Gaby Casadesus (piano) / Philadelphia Orchestra / Eugene Ormandy [1946-1951]
Sony (France) 5033892: 2001 (2 CDs)

I first saw this set among a host of other Casadesus CDs from Sony (France) in Paris five years ago, but too bad I did not pick up any on that occasion.

Liszt: Sonata in B minor / Vallme d'Obermann / Ballade No. 2 / Saint Frzncis of Paola Walking on the Water (Legend No. 2)
Lovro Pogorelich [2006]
Intrada INTRA026: DDD 2006

Do the name and the face of this Croatian pianist ring any bells to you? Lovro (b. 1970) is the younger brother of Ivo.

I note with gratitude the generous bandings for the Sonata (16 tracks). He is gloriously recorded.

Bach: Well-Tempered Clavier (selections)
Sviatoslav Richter [1970-1973]
RCA (BMG France) 74321 536512: ADD

It's handy to have a single-disc selections of Richter's Salzburg complete WTC (1970-1973), although I must say I prefer his Innsbruck complete WTC (1973), taking into account both the playing and the recorded sound.

Chopin: Four Ballades
Liszt: Sonata in B minor
Tamhs Vhshry [2003]
Hungaroton HCD 32271: DDD 2005

Vhshry's singing lines in Chopin (on DG) are always a joy to me, and it's nice to be able to follow his recent musical career in this CD. He performs Liszt's B minor Sonata in the grand manner, sailing through its complexities with amazing versatility.

[#6711] Beethoven Piano Sonata - Appassionata

Thanks God it is Friday (& the extra half day holiday)

Personally, I think the pause at 3:10 can be longer, at 3:18 he is getting hurry, it becomes serious after the wrong note at 3:23 and relief at 4:15. Although technically not upto Arrau's standard. I like the interpretation of this pianist.

Arrau:

The one below by Solomon Cutner is much better.

I like his first movement more than the third.
About the 3rd movement, to me, it will be even better if the cresendo and decresendo is played more exaggerate (eg at 1:10 , 3:42) and I don't like how those repeated notes (from 1:27 onwards) are played.

[#6712] Beethoven Piano Sonata - Appassionata
trollope:

It's fascinating to read and view your recent European acquisitions.

While classical music is "alive", its demographics has changed so much that so many first-rate artists, of the present and certainly of the past, have been marginalized in the "general market", symbolized by "international" realeases.

Robert Casadesus is just one example. Even decades ago, his Ravel and Debussy, not to mention his Scarlatti and beethoven and Chopin, were difficult to come by. It took me many years to gather together his LPs, some French and many Japanese. These days, his Mozart concerti are practically give-aways in the used LP bins here.

European CDs are awfully expensive. We should be grateful for the price of CDs inn HK, though we suffer from the selection.

I found that you buy your CD from France. Have you been to France?

I went there two years ago, a memorable experience for me.

This less famous set is actually very satisfactory in terms of sound and singing of certain soloists. Worth trying.
