| [#6784] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hjleak/message/18424 -------------------------------------- (Cross posted to Quad and Spendor group) Thanks Steve for making such a great effort, here is a small write up on the day, all very subjective of course! Here are some pics for the Quad and Spendor groups to see: http://photobucket.com/albums/y115/kiewa/vintage_audio/ It was a fantastic day, but as expected we didn't get through all the gear. We began with running all the speakers with two CD tracks driven by a Quad 303. It was interesting to note the differences between the speakers. The Spendor BC1 and Quad ESL 57 sounded quite similar, provided you were on axis with the Quad's. The LS3/5a were simply amazing......how does this little shoe box sound so lifelike? The Tannoys were in a league of there own in terms of dynamics and scale, when the levels rose they filled the large room easily. The sound is so powerful. Initially the big Tannoys of Steve Spicer's were out of phase, they sounded pretty woeful as you could imagine, exaggerated by the SRM12X which sounded much better. After correcting this phase issue, the big Tannoys sounded excellent on more modern music. The Tannoy does have a very strong character of sound, I am not sure I could live with the mid range colouration however on popular and jazz, a big Tannoy is hard to beat. They are not so convincing on classical music I have to say. The Spendor and Quad's were much more neutral sounding on classical works and had a more extended top end but inferior dynamics. The Quad 303 I have to say is a very fine amplifier. At one stage, I was out of the room for some minutes and when I came back I was amazed to hear how life like the sound was from the big Tannoys. When I walked up closer, I found out the LS3/5a's were playing! .......on vocal and small chamber works, this speaker is amazing. How does it do it? On larger scale works, the speakers were swallowed up by the large room and limited output but even so, the performance was excellent. I didn't have a decent listen to Steve's modified Leak Sandwiches but for the few minutes I heard them they sounded pretty good. After lunch, Steve did a very interesting speaker comparison using Leak amplification. He devised a switch where we could swap instantaneously between three speakers. We compared the big Tannoys, the Quads and LS3/5a. Again, the differences were pretty much as above however Steve's choice of vocal music suited the Tannoys much better...perhaps giving weight to the theory that one really needs to have a few systems depending upon what you listen to. Steve then fired up the Lowther LL26 amps, I'd never seen a pair before and there performance was most impressive. A very authoritive bass with articulate and detailed mid range and treble with lots of power, nice! We then used the BC1 to try some amplifiers, Trimax A54, Quad II, Leak TL12.1, Radford K25. I had never heard the 12.1 before so this was a good experience. They have the most beautiful mid range I think I have yet heard from the Spendors, so detailed with amazing presence. The low and high frequencies were not extended, the bass I found slightly ill defined and the top end was noticeably rolled, this was very apparent when we tried the Radford and Trimax A54 which drove the Spendors with much more authority at the frequency extremes but without the beautiful mid range of the Leaks. On certain types of music, the 12.1 is simply stunning, like jazz, chamber and vocal works. Unfortunately, time did not permit us to try the TL25A, maybe next time. The Quad II was in between the sound of the Trimax/Radford and Leak TL12.1. Not quite as sweet and detailed in the mid range but better at the frequency extremes. Next we tried the Quads with the Tannoys and I felt this was not a good combination, the Quad II didn't have a good control of the speakers, possibly because of the power needed to fill the room. The bass was lumpy and slow, but the mid range was excellent as was the top end. Again, fine for small works but for large scale classical and popular works, more power was needed. The Quads were better driving the BC1's and although not going as loud as the Tannoys, the sound was more coherent. For me, the sound of the day goes to John Corneille who brought his beautiful Luxman MB3045's driving the Quad ESL57. The Lux had it all, detail, frequency extension and beautiful open mid range. Coupled with the Quads neutrality, this was stunning. I had a great day and a lot of fun and thanks to those members who bought gear, especially Steve Spicer who had to bring a trailer as well and to John for bringing the Quads. Regards, Carl. |

| [#6790] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user "JL, a proud owner of BC 1, should read this message." I once compared BC1s with Rogers LS3/5A Golds at DD's place. Old Pal was also present. The thre of us unamiously agreed that the BC1s obviously performed better than the Rogers Golds. We used either Lafayette KT600A or Scott 122 + Leak 12.1 and listened to the same songs. JL |

| [#6794] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user I've been back from Russia for three days. I'm still unable to adjust my body clock to the four hours' time difference. Both BC1 & LS3/5A are nice vintage speakers (some versions of the latter may not be vintage, of course). We should not compare a hami melon with an orange. I only said that the three who did the audition the other day all preferred BC1 to LS3/5A Rogers Gold. I must reiterate that there are many limitations, say, the size of DD's listening area is approx 12 x 20 sq ft. The amps we used and the music we played would have effects either. Also, personal taste also matters. Anyhow, that experience has demonstrated that Leak 12.1 can cope very well with BC1, and so with Lafayette KT600A and Scott 122. Or, I can put it this way: Leak 12.1 is very versatile, which can do well with many preamps and speakers. Happy listening! |

Also, I have only auditioned 12.1 driving BC1s several times. Anyhow, I would say, 12.1 is the best amongst the three, including the price, of course. On the other hand, comparing the performance between Marantz 8B and Eico HF60 when driving BC1s, I think it depends on which music I play. When I need power and transparency, HF60 excels. However, when I do with easy listening, I would prefer M8B. I must say both are masterpieces of vintage tube power amps. Sometimes, I do regret for having sold my M8B. Regards JL |

| [#6802] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user I only say I regret sometimes. In other words, for most of the time, I don't regret. If I don't make way for some other items, I could have enjoyed less. For example, had I not sold my M8B, how could I have acquired the superb Lafayette KT550? I would say, KT550 is one of the best powerful tube power amps I have ever auditioned. I ought to be very much remorseful if I had not bought it! |
