| [#6873] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Hi John, I came very close to put my money in a pair of TL12.1 almost 8 years back but was only put off by the troide connected KT66s. The asking price was only 1200. Do I regret for skipping that? Well, yes, no, may be yes or perhaps no. Here is my thought 1. Connecting a tetrode to a troide is not the same as a ture troide. I rather pay more for a push-pull PX4 or PX25, e.g. Daytron, Decca or RGD. 2. What I really like about the TL12.1 is the 10K output transformer but prefer the Heathkit circuit which use 6J5 throughout, kind of orginal Williamson. 3. Currently, too expensive for me. You can disagree with me on anything but not this point because I do know I am a poor and under paid, right, my friend. I have no problem to believe that TL12.1 is one of the best sounding classics. We all know why it named 12.1 because of the lower distortion. TL10.1 manged to accomplished similar level of distortion with a much lower market price and is something I can afford. For sheer music quality, anyone fancy making a direct comparsion with the TL12.1 and TL10.1 I am not trying to tell you guys that TL10.1 is a better one but as we are all Leak fans, shouldn't we all gather for a listening session with 2 of the best Leak has ever made. Oh, lets include the TL25A. Another hidden tiger. Lets put aside all stereo versions, TL12plus, TL25 and TL50 for the time being. |

| [#6875] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user I see the TL12.1 and TL10.1 TL12.1 is double bobin wound output transformer while the TL10.1 is not. Tube wise, TL12.1 can be upgraded to VT75, while the TL10.1 seems limited to KT61. Due to the higher popularity of TL12.1, the price for TL10.1 won't be staying behind for too long. Meanwhile, it's still a very good amp and quite neglected in the market. |

An amplifier with 0.1% distortion at does not always sound better than another amplifier which has 1% distortion at the rated output power. ^___^ |

| [#6878] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user EL33 can be used in place of KT61 in TL10.1, and probably will sound better too. And these tubes are still just selling at about HK$1000-HK$1200 per quad set, which is relatively inexpensive. And even when they run out, TL10.1 can be changed to use 6L6G. Yet I don't like TL10.1 to cut cost in skipping the choke and also the output not using double bobbin. |

| [#6882] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user NFB - The main purpose of Negative Feedback employed in most valves amps is to lower the overall output impedence of a circuit. It may also serve to lower distortion and hum. No one ever said that 0.1% distortion always give better sound than a 1% distortion. What Leak was so pround of is the ability to control the overall distortion to a level that no other manufacture at the time could do. To effectively apply high feedback without instability at high frequency is not an easy task. Overall NFB is a very complicated subject. It involves Gain reduction factor, effective plate resistance, frequency response curve and many more. You can chnage the value of a feedback resistor and hear the difference but I do not carry sufficent knowledge to make all the calculations and apply it properly. |
