| [#683] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listened to Satie's piano music last night, really dreamy and hypnotic, Debussy may got his inspiration from Satie. I have one disc of Satie's music only, but I think that is enough as most of his pieces are of similiar style.  |

( classical mus AHBA, Pollini have very good piano technique, he was my favorite pianist once upon a time, but I found his recent recording too clinical and analytical. His late Beethoven piano sonata however, was a perfect balance between sense and sensibility. I also have Abbado's latest recording of Beethoven symphony on DVD, this time his orchestra was small, his tempo was fast, probably influenced by the `historical informed performance' that are very popular this few years.  |

| [#692] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I listened to Chopin's piano concerto played by Zimerman in his youth. Compare with the recent one released in 1999, Zimerman was more fiery back in 1980s. But if I have to choose one disc only, I would still go for his 1999's version for its personal insight and its extremely romantic piano playing.  |

( classical mus ckm, For arrau's emperor, i prefer his earlier haitink version with the concertgebouw in the 1960s though his latter davis playing did gained an overwhelming praise. By then the artist with physical and mental prowess at his peak, was mature and energetic to grasp the music and the orchestra at the first note. The musical flow was majestic, with no less elegance scintillating throughout the movements. |

( classical mus Last night, listened to some piano music by Brahms, these pieces are sensitive and romantic, the recording was very good too, even it was recorded back in 1960s. Katchen's playing was fiery and exciting, although he cannot rival with Gilels for his gravity and sensitivitiy in the more reflective passage, he is very good already and his playing of Brahms was justly famous.  |

| [#699] What are you listening to? ( classical mus 8/02/2007 HKPO/Mahler/Leiferkus/EdW CCCH I went with several friends to the second night’s performance. Perhaps due to other programs on offer (like the Leipzig at the CCCH and the excellent Artemis Quartet at the CH) and the add-on nature, the hall was only about 60-70% full. This time the orchestra was seated somewhat differently, and it’s good they are experimenting. The violins were divided, the celli in the center and the bass section to the left. From my usual seat I like the sound of the new arrangement, seemingly bringing more clarity to the middle strings.. I am grateful to have had the chance to hear the Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen. As soon as Sergei Leiferkus walked out, one was hooked by his aristocratic air (on that note, how he took a bow!). Commensurate with his demeanor, he sang magnificently, in a beautifully modulated tone, with devotion to the text and that rarest of sentiments, nobility. In response the orchestra was appropriately delicate and poetic. An excellent performance on all counts. A friend pined for a younger voice though. It is hard to characterize the performance of the seventh, one of my favorites. One may say it is mostly another typical EdW performance, without much character. But it’s more seriously lacking than that. It was a journey devoid of the middle. I had thought this symphony might be well suited to the cool conductor, but alas. The orchestra played powerfully, but more often than not sounded ragged rather than galvanized (as they were in the performance of the third). The opening of the first movement was sharp but things plodded on squarely. As I gradually got deflated a miracle happened midway. The lyricism of the strings garnered momentum and the orchestra sailed on purposefully for the rest of the movement. Bravo! But then I got deflated quickly again by the bland Nachtmusik I, scherzo and Nachmusik II, all devoid of phastasmorical elements. Even the manic determination of the usually uncommonly excellent John Harding seemed perfunctory. The finale was better, but the cacophony had a hollow center, devoid of joy. The orchestra played well, and the principals, including the guest principal violist, all gave their best. Special mention to Mark Vines and the horn section. Both of my friends remarked on how “noisy” the symphony seemed. One had attended the performance of the third and I asked him what was the difference. He thought for a while and said while performance of the third had a big sound this performance was just noise. Another friend who went the previous night remarked on the disjointed nature of the performance. EdW wrote a note in the program, “Mahler and me”, in which he said: “(Mahler) builds up a very complex picture in the score which cannot be interpreted with a broad brush. This complexity calls for…to achieve the right overall balance. It is in these details that Mahler shows his experience as a conductor.” I think EdW should chew over what he himself had written. There are plenty of lessons in there for himself as a conductor. In view of the distasteful drama unfolding within the HKPO, it is time EdW asked less of others and more of himself. Please do not spend any more money on SCMP sponsored features; please don’t overspend and overdo this self-promoting “building” stuff. Fear can achieve certain things, but show us more character and humanity in your music making. When things do not work out, think of your own responsibility before blaming the musicians, who can play with melting beauty for many a "lesser" guest conductor.. |

Thank you for your detail review of performance of HKPO and Edo De Waarts, I really don't have the time to listened to HKPO and Edo de Waarts last night, but I noticed that they have been very hard working over the past seasons. I have attended a HKPO/Warrts concert of Wagner's music in which they sound great to me ( although I have not attended any concert on Wagner's music before), there are still room for improvement, but I am quite sure they will get better in the near future. |
