" ----------------------------------------- Jeremy, Not really; I am just learning by working. As I have mentioned here in R33 before, I have collected for too many amps that I need to play with. Most of them did not work at arrival and need my attention. 久病成醫! :) You can bring your M1 + M2 to my workshop for a health check. I am sending you my mobile no. via e-mail. Regards, Richard |

| [#7069] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user See my question ~ RE: [hjleak] Leak TL/12 Point One & EL34 valve ------------------------------------- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hjleak/message/18590 Hi, Good question! Although the KT66 and EL34 are similar valves (ignoring the fact one is a beam tetrode and the other is a pentode!), there is one problem the g3 (suppressor grid) comes out to an external connection Pin1 and this will need connecting to the cathode Pin 8 (as in the ST60/50 TL25+). As I don't own a TL12.1 (and as they say - one day my TL12.1 will come!) I'm using the voltages and values quoted on the circuit in Steve's book (but I do have a ST60 & TL25+) . I'm sure the EL34 will work ok with g3 & cathode connected as above, and enable you to compare the two valves, but I'm not sure the TL12.1 KT66 bias conditions (RK - KT66 = 600Ohms whereas the EL34 RK = 440Ohms) will be totally optimal to get the best from the EL34? It would be ill advised to play with the cathode resistor as you'll run the risk of increasing the current which could put a strain on the transformers..!! Finally, I feel the unique sound of the TL12.1 comes for the triode connected KT66 and some of this could be lost with the EL34. Regards. Terry. -----Original Message----- From: hjleak@yahoogroups.com [mailto:hjleak@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of john_keung2002 Sent: 21 August 2005 13:43 To: hjleak@yahoogroups.com Subject: [hjleak] Leak TL/12 Point One & EL34 valve Hi all Leak Stereo 50, Stereo 60 & TL/25 Plus can sing with EL34. | [#7070] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hjleak/message/18591 ----------------------------------- I'd hazard a statement of yes, but don't do it. EL34 has higher current draw than GEC KT66, so the mains xfr might be stressed. EL34 in triode isn't as linear as KT66. | [#7071] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Good morning! I think Lee referred to the higher Ih required by EL34, 1.5A, vis-a-vis KT66's 1.27A. Two EL34 would mean 0.46A more filament current is drawn. It is perhaps not too much from the oversized 12.1 open framed PS transformer. The more significant issue may be a correct bias for EL34s in 12.1! The cathode resistor in 12.1 is 600 ohm at stock, which is too high for EL34 (usually 235 to 300 ohm). Thus, EL34 would work in an even less linear fashion. I would think no major harm with EL34 in 12.1. But before trying EL34, KT66's socket pin 1 should be wired to pin 8 because EL34's different internal structure (see picture below). In other words, a minor modification to 12.1 is required before EL34 may be tried in the monobloc. ![]() |

See KT66's internal structure below. ![]() |

| [#7074] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Gingers, If you compare the cathode resistors in different LEAK power amps: LEAK TL25+ (EL34 or KT66): 440 ohm LEAK ST60 (EL34): 270 ohm LEAK TL12.1 (KT66): 600 ohm LEAK TL25A (KT66): 600 ohm (if my memory serves me well) You can see that either KT66 or EL34 can work at their best, optimised mode in TL25+. But KT66 may be working at a bit better position than EL34 in TL25+. |

| [#7080] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Hi TL12.1 owners, Here is something I want to share with you when you connect EL34 to your 12.1. My source of info come from orginal Osram, Philips and Williamson data. 1. When connect KT66 as troide with B+ running at 400v. The cathode reisistor should be around 600 ohms. For EL34 connect as troide, the resistor should be around 440ohms. Higher resistor value then recommended would cause lower current flow. Should cause no harm to the output and power transformers. 2. With around 10% increase in overall heater currect when connecting EL34s, the chance of destorying the power trnansformer is very lower. 10% tolorence is a normal practice. Even our AC supply can vary more than 10%. 3. LEAK/Williamson circuit aim at lower distortion at the expense of less power. Troide connect KT66 has lower internal resistance than EL34. With the same output transformer, you can expect a higher overall distortion from EL34 in your TL12.1. In fact, troide connect KT66 has similar measured performace as a PX4. Williamson orginal idea did though about PX4 push pull but was put off by 4v heater and higher cost. 4. I am sure you all know better that KT66 come from a big family, so why not try 5881 or 6l6GC etc. Their max disspation is very close to KT66 (25W). Probably a good direct replacement. |
