[#702] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I listened to Mahler's symphony No.7 I found Mahler's symphony No.7 a hard nut to crack in the past, but after reading the detail essay writtien by Mahler specialist Donald Mitchell (on the CD booklet) and the vivid explanation by Tony Duggan on the web (http://www.musicweb-international.com/Mahler/Mahler7.htm), I found it less confusing. In simple term, it is a symphony of peace (Nachtmusik) after the tragical, soul shaking, military symphony No.6. The first and fifth movement can be preceived as `Night and the return of Day' and the middle three movement is dreamy, peaceful or sometime dark and depressive night. So I agree with Doctor John that it should not be played too loud. Claudio Abbado have one of the greatness under his baton, although Chicago symphony orchestra did not have the refine woodwind and brass of Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, their playing of Nachtmusik was melting and their the fifth movement was trilling. Although, I have only one version, I found it very satisfying anyway. ![]()

[#705] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Friends: It's just the view of a few. There're views to the contrary, like the SCMP, which gave it a good review. minpin: -Upstairs, to the sides usually. -Artemis, not live. But years ago, when they first formed, there was a Beethoven CD that came with either Classics or BBC magazine, and I was astonished by the level of playing. So I've been following them. They are the one to watch. A friend went and had nothing but praise. 邊個邊個: I personally do not agree at all with what EdW is doing to the orchestra, and his firing of people left and right.

[#708] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listened to Tchaikovsky's symphony No.6 last night, I cannot remember when was the last time I listened to this symphony, it must be a long time ago, I am also quite surprised that my wife have not heard of this symphony before. Muti's conducting was sensitive, although he miss the last ounce of russian spirit that make Marvinsky's version so special, he depict the sense of despair most vivdly. With excellent engineering from EMI, I cannot complain but sit back and enjoy. ![]()

[#712] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listened to spanish music last night, music by Falla. Probably the most famous piece of music by Falla is his `Nights in the Gardens of Spain', but I am very interested in his Harpsichord concerto in which the harpsichord sound like a modern percussion instrument, probably influenza by Neo-classical music movement pioneered by Stravinsky. Other pieces are also flooded with strong spanish rthythum and passion. Recording quality are Decca usual high standard. ![]()

[#717] What are you listening to? ( classical mus chankaiming hing, Yes, Sagrada Familia is a great building, very very impressive. The pic of Sagrada Familia that you posted should be taken long time ago, now Sagrada Familia looks even more attractive as more structure are being added. I've been to Barcelona last June and stayed in Sagrada Familia for more than 4 hours, took tons of photos.

[#719] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I have been to spain back in 2005, spanish people are really interesting, the work from 8am to 3pm ( no break in between ) , then they are off for `lunch'( don't have to work on that day anymore ), thereafter they go shopping, go to cafe to smoke and drink, then they have dinner at arround 11pm. I have the privilage to attend a guiter concert in a 15th century church by Sanchez (he was unkonwn to me before the concert) , a unforgetable experience!
