George ![]()

[#7310] Pro Sound: Richter set trollope Thks for the info about Prosound. I am considering the BBC series Portrait of Legend of Richter, which seems a good bargain at Prosound. May I ask how's the recording as I am a bit dread of cracking sounds?

[#7311] Richter BBC 4-CD set Good evening Eurojazz, CD 1: mono (r.1961) The two Liszt concertos are significantly inferior in sound compared with the Philips ones, but the first two Chopin tracks are difficult to find elsewhile. CD 2: stereo (r.1966) This is in every way an important Richter CD, almost all items of which are not obtainable elsewhere. I have no qualms about the sound. Enjoyable music and much to admire about the magic of Richter, in particular Scriabin's "Black Mass". As I see it, the two greatest renditons of this one-movement sonata were both recorded in 1966: Horowitz's (CBS) offers arguably greater charm; but Richter's is decadence personified, and in a way darker, or shall we say devilicious. CD 3: mono (r.1963) Featuring three German composers central to Richter's repertoire. Almost all of them have better recorded Richter versions I am afraid. Acceptable mono sound. CD 4: stereo (r.1964-1966) Another great disc. Probably the most instantly enjoyable one among the 4 CDs in this set. Not to be missed really. I don't know how many you can save by buying all four of them in a set. Non Richter fans would, I gather, want CDs 2 & 4 anyway, both recorded in Aldeburgh. So much of what is best from Richter comes from this little town in England, often from unscheduled recitals, as the performances of Chopin's Barcarolle and the Liszt B minor Sonata found in CD4. There is no need to worry about noise from the audience. They have behaved admirably. It has taken me a few hours to reply to your message because I've been listening to tracks in these four CDs just now (while at the same time working on the computer). Richter has done so much to clear the air (for me) in our land of social-political fog. ![]()

[#7312] Richter BBC 4-CD set trollope No better guidance ; grateful for the meticulous answer and count with you, sir. in our land of social-political fog ? This island's politics? Perhaps I am too indulged in preparing for the coming application season (2ndary schools) and may have missed sth in town. BTW, I am listening to the BBC set of Michelangeli from Pro Sound. Last month, I borrowed from public library a Michelangeli playing Paganini Caprice and last week, I borrowed Kaori Muraji (Japanese guitaress) playing same Caprice. Both are enjoyable.

[#7314] Richter BBC 4-CD set Trollope, Thank for your meticulous listening and informative comparison! I also bought this 4CDs set because it only spent me less than HKD300 at prosound, $75 per cd which is a bargain and super budget purchase. I like CD1,2 and 4 which are well-played and recorded, sound quality produced by BBC engineers is never faulty but highly praised. I have a duplicate copy of CD4 but I do like his supreme fingerwork and inspired yet poetric reading of Chopin's Barcarolle and Liszt B minor Sonata ( although not at the same league of his rendition in Philips recording!), highly recommended to all Richter lovers and starter! I am expecting to this new CDs of Richter issued by BBC legends and Backhaus playing Beethoven Hammerklavier in 1956 New York at Carnige Hall, both are "must"! ![]()

| [#7315] Backhaus' Hammerklavier Live recital in 1956 Backhaus made his first US debut and live recital at Carnegie Hall of New York in 1956, an unique exquisite rendition which was highly praised by the late Harnold C. Schonberg, the former senior music critics of New York Times as "a monumental and inspired playing with ephemeral exquisiteness, he [backhaus] could delineate most subtle degrees of light and shade; the Contrast and nuance within hammerklavier can be fully exercised by his effortless fingers and he infused with his own kind of poetry by the sense of legato and expressive freedom, a geunine testimony to his incarnation of Leipzig school and heavy-footed approach for Beethoven's paino repetoire". His playing has influenced many young pianists in next generations, Pollini selected him as one of the most admired pianist during his youth and Kvovacevich commented him as "the only pianist that understood Hammerklavier Sonata" I am looking forward to hear this live recording! | [#7317] 2 CDs I played today Trollpe Thank for your heartfelt recommendation! The Furtwangler's account recorded in 1943 really grasp my eyes not because Furtwangler conducted Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, but the greatest tenor Sigurd Bjorling who had a great and powerful voice at the same league as Caruso during 1920s-40s, IS there any reincarnation in other record brand? I will buy Richter's live account due to Schumann Fantasiestucke op.12 which has been my ongoing favourite for "self-mesmerization" after listening to his earlier DG account (DG 4590182), such a mesmerizing and acid journey to cure my sleeplessness and depression during my stay in UK, he wonderfully played with poetry, magnificent control of dynamics, his gift for seeing a large-scale work (and capability to integrate the several inconsecutive pieces as eloquent and intact as possible), all these contribute to the impression of unmatchable strength and vision, his utmost control of colour is beguilingly subtle, I prefer his reading to Argerich's live account in EMI. I also bought a german-pressing LP of his 1979 Tokyo recital playing Schumann Noveletten op.21 and Chopin's prelude op.28 (excerpt only), it seems to me that JVC did reissue this account on CD format, what a pity that I fail to buy anymore. Still I love his live performance by virtue of its more refined, transcendental meditation and luscious playing which combines drama, power, finesse and poetic delicacy, though I reserve a lot of his insistence using Yamaha Concert Grand -CF!
