A great news for those Bernstein and Mahler freak who never refute SACD or digital format

SONY/BMG reissued the full cycle of Bernstein's account in Columbia era during 1960's in SACD format, another great contribution after Gunter Wand's boxset of Beethoven and Bruckner's symphonies!

This is my first listening to Britten's piano concerto and his violin concerto.

The piano concerto recording here, played by Ricther and conducted by the composer himself is highly acclaimed.

Like "the Simple Symphony", these concertos are recorded in The Maltings, Snape, they all sound very good.

Per the discussion with Trollope dated 07-03-18 23:05, I find this Mozart Piano Quartets record finally.

Among the others I've encountered (Solti on the piano under Decca label and Guarneri Quartet with Rubinstein under RCA), this is the one I like most where the one by Stern, Laredo, Ax and MA under Sony comes second.

[#7331] Great Pianists of the 20th Century
Unlike cpsjj, I bought Philips's "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" one by one in 10 10-double-CD boxes, beginning in late 1998 (462 731-2). I was too hunger for these releases to wait for the completion of the series. It would be simply maddening to ask me to resist buying any until double CD No.100 appeared – oh there was a human impossibility about it! And so the shopping voyage went on, ending with the arrival of the tenth box (462 740-2) exactly eleven months later. I paid about $900 for each box of 20 CDs, sometimes less and occasionally more, and ended up paying $9,067 for the whole thing. It took me quite a long time to finish listening to the entire collection of 200 CDs, and obviously even longer to recover from the straitened circumstances I allowed myself to fall in.

Also unlike cpsjj, I don't have the exquisitely prepared booklet giving a full index of the works, listed first by composers, and then by pianists. That goes only with the complete set in two cardboard boxes. But I have had the booklet photocopied soon enough. There is also a double-CD sampler, which I have.

By the way, I seem to have overheard somewhere in R33 a discussion about the wisdom of giving Andrm Previn a presence in this series. Tom Deacon, the man behind this production, is cocksure that Previn is one of 20th century's great pianist, and he speaks somewhat fiercely in defence of his decision in an interview with the people from a Taiwan classical music magazine. Tonight is also one of my joyful and exciting night ever in my lifetime because I unexpectedly receive a precious gift from a R33 member, minpin, who bought me my most wanted item about Sviatoslav Richter during his business trip in Japan.

Your collection make me eye opened, concerning `great pianist of pianist series' I only brought it one by one up to a total of 15 volume only.

This series was certain one of the greatest classical music project in the last century, by the way, I am quite interested in why Andre Previn was choosen as one of the great pianists.

You will see that in that issue of "Classical Music Magazine", apart from the Deacon interview, other articles that may interest some of you include:

彭聖錦 on Annie Fischer's Beethoven cycle (pp. 118-123)
冉天豪 on about a dozen La Traviata CDs (pp. 108-116)
焦元溥 continues his survey of "Pictures at an Exhibition" versions (pp. 80-94)

See also, in photo below, Previn as jazz pianist in his Hollywood years, playing numbers from the musical "My Fair Lady". It's difficult to imagine that it was recorded 51 years ago, yes five-one. Such a successful 1988 digital remastering job, and in stereo – what a comfort! Sure I mind the short playing time of 36 minutes, yes three-six; but with such dashing music and playing, one mustn't grumble.

We also see Previn here as composer in the Sony CD entitled "From Ordinary Things", recorded in 1995 at the Seiji Ozawa Hall in Tanglewood, Massachussetts. Well, I have not yet acquired the taste to enjoy the four works here. About the Nobel prize-winning Toni Morrison, I have read only one novel of hers – "Beloved" (1987) – and don't in the least enjoy it.
