[#7448] Brandenburg Concerto Eric Karl Richter recorded this whole brandenburg concertos in 1967 for DGG Archiv (subsequent account can be found in Warner reissue), a time when authentic approach and period instrument were not widely accepted in Europe,I am not surprised at all that you dislike this modern instrument recording (a bit dry sonic quality but I find it acceptable of my SACDs reincarnation)because I had similar reluctance after listening to my first-love Pinnock's rendition (DGG Archiv), the authentic approach and period instruments used by Pinnock in his 1981 account are much more mature, agile and passionate (by virtue of tempo tending to be quick, lean sound and phrasing more crispy in Baroque style I wonder!) Richter's account in contrast was much more detached and self-reserved but having sumptuous sublime and immaculate harmony in a steady and smooth pace, we could not deny that this "german school" protestant approach was quite "original" indeed, Karl Richter served the same post as choir and organ master at St Thomas Church in Leipzig as JS Bach served 250 years ago! He pursued not an exact duplication of those authentic approach as our contemporary musicians strive for, K. Richter valued how to rejuvenate the spiritual and transcendental qualities within the score in a modern instrument , rather than the repeated study of period instrument itself and so-called "authentic approach", I still opine that 100% cloning of authentic approach is simply impossible nor sensible, the state of minds among performers 250 years ago has been largely different with our contemporary players, would it be a bit absurd to pursue the authentic approach? I really wonder... Still the timeless music of Bach should accommodate the modern approach and modern instrument, Bach in heaven should be quite happy if we can stretch the application of modern instrument with our open-mind and creativity playing his music (electric violin or guitar, why not?) ! http://bbs.moninet.com.tw/board/topic.cgi?forum=227&topic=463&show=175 George ![]()

[#7451] Dang Thai Son 鄧泰新 Previously the obscure Dang Thai Son was mentioned several times, by trollope and george1977 I think. Ever since I heard him in HK I was really keen to hear more from him. Thanks to information about POLOARTS from trollope, a few days ago in SZ I not only scored Richter's Innsbruck 4-CD Bach set, but also 4 2-CD sets of Chopin played by Dang Thai Son. Many thanks. Please note anyone who wants to buy a lot there can pay $20 for a 2-year membership, the benefit being 10% off all purchases, applicable instantly. I can;t recall whether trollope has posted Dang's CD contents here before, hence I'm doing it now. Listening to the concerto CD right now. Excellent playing, ravishing tone. The accompaniment of Sinfonia Varsovia under Jerzy Maksymiuk is excellent too. Good JVC K2 recording/mastering. The POLOARTS Chinese booklet is laudable too. These CDs are liscensed from Victor/JVC. The originals are expensive and can be viewed here: http://www.dangthaison.net/piano_site_May_2007.swf POLOARTS' web is inadequate and no pics are available. POLO CL2B 86020-2 Complete Nocturnes POLO CL2B 86021-2 Misc/Concerto 1,2 POLO CL2B 86023-2 Complete Preludes, Waltzes, Bacarolle POLO CL2B 86024-2 Ballads, Scherzi, Impromptus, Bolero Taratelle Correlating with Dang's website, I am still missing some volumes, the sonatas, most of the polonaises and etudes (86021 has some etudes and polonaises, also duplication of other items). Notably missing 86022 also, which must be Dang too. I note Dang has a newer recording of the concerti featuring the unlikely partners of Orchestra of the 18th Century/Bruggen! ![]()

[#7453] Martzy/Starker I am not in general a great fan of Joanna Martzy, though I enjoy tremendously some of her readings in chamber music. This EMI set is definitely a collector's item, whether you take to Martzy or not. And a bargain to boot, at slightly $100 +. ![]()

[#7454] Martzy/Starker I was almost tempted this afternoon when I saw the super bargain Martzy / Starker set sold at $108 in HK Records, but I bought a ruinously expensive Barinova CD instead. Galina Barinova was one of Russia's most talented musicians of the old generation. She finished conservatory studies in 1927 without attending classes! About this CD (r1952-1962): in every way a successful sound restoration job by the Russian label; and what glowing and beautiful sound to which I am now listening. ![]()
