[#7465] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Hi, Hon, I am not the guy from US, I am a local middle age man still holding good faith in vinyl sound and like meeting nice people. I love LS3/5s (that's why I met Ginger) with an open mind to all other good hi-fi gear, no matter solid state or tube, modern or vintage. I just switched from LS3/5a (still keeping one pair 15ohm, no substitute), sonus faber then followed by focus audio to esl because I have just moved to a new living place where humidity is no longer an issue. Just wish to say hello. Dennis

[#7470] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user KY To be honest, I didn't listen to my two pairs of ESL57 for more than 30 hours! I owned them at different times, each time for only a few months. I found them just too big for my room, so I had to put them in my bedroom after I listened to them for a few hours. However I alway said that listening to the ESL57 in my own room is such a memorable experience that I will never forget. The ebay going rate of ESL57 is quite reasonable at the moment, I am tempted to get another pair, but I am afraid that I may have to sell them again due to their hugh size! Back to your question. No, I didn't compare the TL12+ and Stereo 20 using the ESL57. They both use the same output transformer. I would think that TL12+ would give better stereo separation because they are monoblocks. Tim Yung likes the TL12+ better than the Stereo 20. Have you got a pair of TL12.1 yet? Hon

[#7471] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Dennis is sure a UK gears lover : ) He is an experience Linn LP12 user. Very knowledgeable and some call him King of Linn LP12 dear Gingers and all friend, Just clarify friends of mine they like calling me Linn man or Linn wong only just for fun in gathering. Perhaps I am the person amongst who gave most patience and interest when examining LP12. No other reason and no qualification indeed, so please don't misunderstand. I think I can perform some standard set up or preliminary checking to avoid bad buy as I used to suffer (or learn from) so many mistakes when buying 2nd hand Linn. Dennis

[#7473] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Hi, dear Hon and KY, My pleasure indeed. You can call me or Gingers. We can introduce more nice people to meet you. By the way, does anyone know any people in HK to perform checking and service for ESL. The sound level of one speaker is much lower. The good news, the charity an tonal balance is still there and we suspect the problem is due to aged electronic part badly needing replacement. Regards Dennis

[#7474] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Reposted from the most interesting tube related forum, namely http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hktubeaudio/ ---------------------------------------------- From: "ah_yung1d" (Tim at R33) Date: Sun Sep 4, 2005 12:34 am Subject: Vintage pre-amp blind test party I attended a vintage pre-amp party organised by our friend Richard in the workshop owned by him and Dr King today. What a great experience and many surprising result! I would like to thank Richard for organising such a fun party and also Dr King for worked so hard to get to a fair comparison. While waiting for Richard to post his summary on R33 forum, I might start sharing what we had heard and the result here for discussion. The listening tests were performed as "blind test" with all the pre- amp placed actually in an adjacent room so none of the participants who gave score (16 of us) cannot see which pre-amp was playing during the party. And all the pre-amp had output level measured and matched to ensure the same output level thoughout the test. The rest of the system consists of a Marantz CD-10 (I think) CD player and all the pre-amp were connected to a pair of excellent sounding (but very sensitive) Leak TL25A driving Rogers LS3/5A. Telefunken tubes (but no ECC80X series) were used as much as possible in all pre-amp to ensure we are not doing a tube shoot-out instead. The test was divided into 2 groups as follow : Group One (all mono preamps) (1) Marantz One (2) Fisher 50C "Good All" version (3) Fisher 80C (4) EICO HF-65 (self-powered) (5) 27M prototype preamp (designed and built by Dr King and Richard) Group Two (all stereo preamps) (a) Marantz 7c (original) (b) Fisher 400CX-2 (c) Fisher 400CX (d) Radford SC22P (modified to "P" version by Dieter) (e) Audio Note M7 (f) Eico HF-85 (floating potential modified) And the score tables are (highest score first): Group One 1- Eico HF-65 2- 27M prototype preamp 3- Marantz One 4- Fisher 50C 5- Fisher 80C Group Two 1- Audio Note M7 2- Fisher 400CX 3- Radford SC22P 4- Marantz 7c 5- Eico HF-85 6- Fisher 400CX-2 For myself, I also marked the Eico HF-65 as best in Group One and Fisher 400CX got the highest score from me. So much for now. Tim

[#7475] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Reposted from the most interesting tube related forum, namely http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hktubeaudio/ --------------------------------------- Date: Sun Sep 4, 2005 10:52 am Subject: Re: Vintage pre-amp blind test party fisheramp Offline Send Email Dear Tim and Richard Personally, I will never rate the preamp by marks, but classified the preamp with sound and emotional characteristics. Techically speaking, there is no best gear in the hi-fi world. For example, the Pilot AA-901 can play blue male song better than Fisher 50-C, Fisher 50-C can play female voice better than Pilot AA-901. The specific sound characteristic of gear will offer absolutely advantage on specific music reproduction. Different sound characteristic made specific gears have their share on the market. On the other hand, 95% audiophile cannot actually use up the potential of preamp, because they only set the preamp in flat, also not really understand the usage of input level, but also don't really understand what means emotional and sound characteristic when they playing specific music. Emotional is hard to count by score, but you have to feel by your heart. Moreover, the skill is always much important than the gear, but understand the emtoional behind the music is always much important than just the sound. Personally, I have more than 30 preamps in my collection included the test items - Eico HF-65, Fisher 80-C, Fisher 50-C, Fisher 400CX- 2. I also have rich experiance with Marantz 1 and 7C (no longer interested in those marantz gear 10 years ago). Sure Eico H65 is one of a very outstanding gear in my collection. However, my test result is much different than the score of below...! One of the major reason I keep so many preamp and amplifier in my collection, because different music has to use different gear to handle...! It is the very first time I hear than someone said Marantz 7C sound better than Fisher 400CX-2...? I traded out at more than 20 pieces of Marantz 7C in the past 11 years, but I still cannot found any Marantz 7C can kick the ass of Fisher 400CX-2 under A/B test...! Few years ago, Tim also do the A/B test in Vintage Audio but any visitors can tell the different ...! More interesting story is Eico HF-86 sounds better than Fisher 400CX-2? I believe Tim should have a result under his heard...! I really want to know what musical source, and combination are using during the test...? It is really interesting test result...! I'm also very interested to know that someone score Fisher 400CX and 400CX2 higher than Fisher 50-C...! Unbelievable! My friend Mr Chui (Founder of Chui Kee) he is in the vintage business for more than 20 years. He owned Marantz 1 and Fisher 50- C. He can easily tell than Fisher 50-C sounds much better and musical than Marantz 1. Best regards Alan

[#7477] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Dennis Your ESL57 sounds like they need a service. It could be the high voltage supply which doesn't give the proper voltage, or the panels are faulty. You can read webpages from Sheldon Stoke: http://quadesl.com/ or Andrew King: http://www.quadesl.org.uk/ to know more about ESL. Do not touch the inside of the ESL if you don't know enough about high voltage. Getting ESL repair is one of my main concerns about these magical electrostatic speakers. Although in England, I know that One Thing Audio can repair ESL and Quad may still service them, they are so big that it is a pain to either send them by post or drive to the repair centre. The repair cost could be higher than the value of the speakers. A few months ago, there was a pair of restored ESL57 in ebay for only 530 pounds, sometimes I wish I bought them, but I am sure if I had bought them, I would be selling them now because of their size! Good luck finding a competent person in HK who can repair your Quad. How about Patrick who is the person returning from US? He told me he restored his old ESL57 in US. Hon

[#7480] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user thanks for the good preamp test and comparison gathering. Maybe next time we can have another same gathering with less Preamp so we can test its more completely. I also wonder the marantz 1 is lower score than the Marantz 7c. Hi brother please me some advise whether my Audio note is good match with the 12.1 ?
