Fit mains on-off switch 2. Replace mains socket with IEC socket 3. Remove and replace resistors 4. Remove and replace capacitors 5. Remove and replace valve bases and replace some wiring between tag board and bases. 6. Replace two phono input sockets and speaker terminals. 7. Switch on with no valves 8. Switch on with rectifier valve and check voltages at marked point on the circuit diagram 9. Insert valves and check voltages again 10. Connect to pre amp, source and speakers and listen. Problems and errors 1. One poorly connecting valve on pre amp, WD40 and steel wool rectified that. 2. Miss-wired one valve base. 3. Forgot earth point on pre amp input socket, at points one and seven. 4. Poor soldered joint on heater supply to V3L meant that V2L worked intermittently. 5. Tried to use with two wrong power valves as bought with it, caused R14L to melt its casing. 6. The new B9A valve sockets are 2mm larger than the hole they go in so I’ll have to drill the holes out with a 7/8” drill when I can get one, from a car boot sale or s/h shop (20 new) I check the values of all the passives I had removed. The errors were: C5 marked on the can as 0.1uF instead on 20nF, someone had replaced the originals with the wrong value; it is the same as C3 so he may have bought them at the same time and replaced them as a cheap rebuild. The brand names of the capacitors are ‘Toc’ ‘metalpack’ and ‘micromite’ are these factory fitted or a later change? C4 measured at 4nF instead of 1nF and was completely worn out. R12/R13 should be 1M0 were 470K according to the banding and measured about that although two were unstable. The others all measured within tolerance on the meter but they may not work in the circuit under real world conditions. Play around with different valves, Mullards etc. 5751 V1. Oak Cone feet from Russ Andrews Possible Modifications From Classique sounds in Leicester. Rewire power valves as triodes. Halves the output to 5W per channel but improves the sound. For each valve base: 1. Cut wire to pin nine and fold back the wire. 2. Link pin nine to pin seven with a 100R/1W resistor. 3. Replace R14/R15 with 540R/2W (if you can find that value) or link the existing 270R/2W in series to give 540R for two valves. 4. Listen with confidence. Replace all resistors with wire wound 1W and 2W. From Derek Rocco of Watford Valves Use 5751 valve in V1 socket, lower gain and better sound. From Andy Evans (www.artsandmedia.com) 1. Replace V1 with 6N1P 2. Replace V2 with 6922 Required circuit mods were not specified and details are elusive unless you visit him in West London and buy replacement valves from him! Conclusions I am hooked on valve amplification and will never return to transistors, I was simply not listening to my classical records and it was the standard hours listening then turn it off due to the tranny sharpness. I was listening through a Nakamichi IA3, 1995 vintage (RRP 350). Mullard valves sound nicer than Sovtek ECC83s and Chinese EL 84s. I had a go at replacing some capacitors on the Point one pre amp which have made a large difference, but I am not sure how far to go, I used up some of the caps from the ST20 rebuild. I have bought a second-hand Croft Micro valve pre amp for 235 to get an idea of the ST20’s limitations; it hasn’t arrived yet so I can’t say. | [#7666] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Here come another Leak Stereo 60 : ) It features the following : Mullard NOS EL34 in all 4 positions Mullard NOS ECC83 in all 3 positions Mullard NOS GZ34 rectifying valve New Black Gate Electrolytics in 3 positions (reservoir & smoothing capacitors) Oil in Beeswax specialised coupling capacitors Tantalum 3 watt resistors in main valve anode loads. Large 2 watt carbon film resistors in majority of remaining positions Gold plated phonos for L/R inputs Input hi/lo switch bypassed to give improved performance, although switch is still there. Speaker terminals replaced with standard banana or hook teminations Extra secondary fuse included to protect mains transformer Bulgin 3 pin mains input plug and socket. All original Leak transformers, inductor, and wirewound resistors --------------------------------------------- I guess the seller did pay a lot for the restoration. The restoration is professionally done...my standard : )  |

A rarity, but obviously not completely original. 700? Glad you said that about 'needing' a heat sheild, my mains transformer gets almost too hot to touch after 6-7 hours on idling, will be investigating again when I dissassemble to clean up chassis, but now believe this to be normal.. Won't be drawn into bidding for this, it can go to someone who's happy with the one, I'm looking for another knackered one of the "small choke- no-heatsink" ilk. I'm drooling over the idea of bridging a pair of these!!
