剛才翻檢了 Richard Osborne 的 "Herbert von Karajan: A Life in Music"(Boston: Northeastern University Press, 1998)。茲抄錄數段,讀之大略可知卡拉揚如何休妻另娶。

Precisely when Karajan first met Eliette Mouret is difficult to ascertain. According to her, she was seventeen.

There had always been women in Karajan's life. Women he fell for, women he used, women who relentlessly pursued him. There were women whom he idealized and desired to excite (taking them flying was a favourite ploy) but whom he had no desire to gratify physically. He enjoyed being watched at a distance by adoring nymphets.

Like many men of sensibility blessed with an eye for beauty and a love of youth, Karajan was undoubtedly as much gratified by male beauty as he was by its female equivalent. Many of his most intimate, long-standing relationships were with men who, matrimonially speaking, were celibate. A more or less permanent celibacy, in friends of either sex, could be said to have been a necessary precondition for working with Karajan.

In October 1958, Karajan remarried. Ever since he had first met Eliette Mouret in 1950, he had been deeply taken by her, and she by him. Close friends knew of the relationship, others no doubt suspected. (Though not the Italian customs officer who apologized to Eliette for keeping "her father" waiting while he checked the equipment stowed in the boot of Karajan's Mercedes.)

None of Karajan's immediate acquaintances believed he would divorce Anita; nor did Anita who, according to Eliette, had tried to warn her off by alleging that Karajan was homosexual and that he would never go through with the idea of marriage and children.

There were conflicting stories about Anita's response. Anita had to some extent encouraged the liaison in the fond belief that she was indispensable to Karajan. Karajan, on the other hand, wanted children and reasoned that, in any case, it was better ("more moral") to marry Eliette and have Anita as his best friend.

Karajan was true to his word: Eliette became his wife and Anita remained his best friend. For the rest of his life there were, in effect, two Mrs Herbert von Karajans. Those in the know always thrilled to the spectacle of Karajan bowing to one wife at the conclusion of the first half of a concert in the Musikverein in Vienna and to the other at the conclusion of the second half.

我又找來 Richard Osborne 的 "Conversations with Karajan" (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1989) ,發現此書談 Eliette 畫藝的部分比 Osborne 的卡拉揚傳記 (1998) 更詳細也更直接。

RO:
You have enjoyed two long marriages. With Eliette von Karajan it has been thirty years of family life, with two daughters, Isabel and Arabel. When did you meet Eliette?

HvK:
First in Saint Tropez. Then she came to London and I saw her sitting in the twelfth or thirteenth row of the Royal Festival Hall. It was quite a shock!

RO:
For her too. She told me that the previous year she had confided to an American friend in Rome that the two people who most fascinated her in the world were Albert Schweitzer and Herbert von Karajan; and a year later she was sitting in an empty hall with Walter Legge, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Herbert von Karajan listening to a private recital on the organ by Albert Schweitzer. As well as looking after your daughters and your home, she has also become a painter.

HvK:
This is a remarkable thing. She always had an interest in the arts, but in painting she is self-taught. For many years her models were the painters of her native France, and as we spent time in Provence this was a wonderful place for her to work. But now she has gone beyond that. There is the possibility of a major exhibition in Japan and here in our Salzburg house I have made for her a gallery on the second floor.

RO:
Well, she said it wasn't quite ready for inspection, but I have seen some work that is in progress that is now very much in her own style: some night forest scenes that are very striking, one very calm, two very anguished.

HvK:
She works very hard. But she also spends a great deal of time walking and studying, in the day, at night. She goes off to the city for a few days, but then she is back. Her real love is nature: plants, animals, everything to do with it. (pp. 139-141)

著名波蘭小提琴家司靈 (Henryk Syeryng 1918-88) 在 Mercury Living Presence 的名盤 Mendelssoh 及 Schumann 小提琴協奏曲終於以 Decca Eloquence 系列重新發行, 大家沒有必要再流連二手店尋尋覓覓, 這碟使用Universal Music 委託 Yamaha 研發的 Ambisonic 24 bit 空間聲學等化處理 (類似以前DGG獨一無二的 20 bit Original Image Bit Processing, 由電腦模擬計算拾音器離樂器相加錄音場所殘響的反射數據), 經由特殊EQ的聲學處理使得這些錄音恢復生氣 (實情是增強高低音伸延, 整理多餘的噪音及增加堂音應當有的殘響)!

未知音質是否較舊的Mercury 美版好?! 三月中上市!

以貝多芬名作《Diabelli》主題變奏曲一炮而紅的鋼琴家Piotr Anderszewski,又出新唱片了,這張新CD很吸引我,原因是他灌錄了貝多芬鋼琴協奏曲第一號,而且還是自己兼任指揮。除了協奏曲外,這張專輯還收錄了貝多芬最晚年的鋼琴作品Bagatelles Op.126。

34歲的阿根廷女鋼琴家Ingrid Fliter,去年與EMI簽下錄音合約,她的首張EMI唱片即將在2月底問世,這是一張全蕭邦作品的新碟。Fliter 在2000年、第14屆蕭邦鋼琴大賽時,拿下銀牌(冠軍是我國的李雲迪),由於出身阿根廷,她常被拿來與前輩Martha Argerich技藝相比。

Only no. 1 has been issued on Praga, the others have been on Supraphon before.

In fact, nos. 2, 3, & 4 have also previously been issued on Ultraphon (see my photo on 05-12-11 09:50, re-posted below) and on DG (more than once).

So, the new CD is valuable chiefly because of item no. 1 – Richter's November 1959 rendition of the Schumann Fantasie in C, as the two previous Praga releases are no longer in wide circulation. On this score alone, this forthcoming Supraphon CD is most welcome, as we will never have enough versions of Richter playing this work (currently there are 6 different versions, played between 1948 and 1980). Schumann's muse joins him every time he plays it, and in the final movement our great pianist the poet is sainthood-bound.

BTW, the information I have is that Richter played it on the second of November, not on the first. And the recording date of the March in G is 29 November 1956.

對於卡拉揚和 Eliette 的婚姻,以及 Eliette 為唱片所畫的風景畫,你大概有興趣一讀另一位卡拉揚傳記作者字挾風霜的批評。

我翻檢了 Robert C Bachmann 的 "Karajan: Notes on a Career" 的英譯本 (London: Quartet Books, 1990),摘錄以下一些內容給你有空時看看。 The book was published in 1983 in Germany after prolonged legal disputes (6 years before Karajan's death in 1989).

On 6 October 1958, Karajan married his third wife, the attractive blonde Frenchwoman Eliette Mouret (her predecessors were Elmy Holgerloef and Anita G┤ermann). With this former fashion and photographic model he succeeded where he had failed with his two wives: he fathered two daughters.

When he met Eliette he was at the zenith both of his musical power and his virility. Eliette, Dior's star fashion model and a photographic model, the epitome of blonde, youthful attractiveness, corresponding to the ideal of beauty of the late fifties, was the outer counterpart to Karajan's lived dream of eternal youth.

Part of Karajan's reason for taking Eliette as his wife was her function as a status symbol, an advertisement, an accessory of success. His possession of her was less one of being than one of having.

Eliette's appearances at the festival were unforgettable in their ritualized convention, when, to the accompaniment of the astonished whispers of the festival audience, she would make her entrance on the arm of some fashionable man or Karajan's private secretary, walk through the packed auditorium and with remarkable solemnity take her seat moments before the epiphany of the maestro. It was the contrived entrance of blonde womanhood, the entrance which skillfully and effectively, as an act of applied psychology, prepared for the supreme entrance.

Herbert and Eliette: a partnership based to a large extent on external appearance. It is curious that Karajan should not have chosen someone who shared his professional inclinations and interests in some form or other. For Eliette was neither musically trained nor intellectually educated and well-read, nor did she share Karajan's sporting interests. She did not sail, she did nothing in the way of sport, and she was afraid of flying.

She made her first public artist appearance as the graphic designer of the record covers of a jubilee edition, called "Karajan Edition", of the hundred best-loved orchestral works as performed by her husband. These record covers now bear details of the pictures that she had painted during the previous years in a spirit of cheerful dilletantism. Intoxicated by the emotions of Karajan's orgies of sound, she summoned up her inner world to transfer it to the canvas.

Eliette, as "The Times" had it, was trying "rather against her will to ride to fame on her husband's coat-tails". Her introduction to the Karajan media package was, from the advertising point of view, a promising one: Herbert conducted, Eliette did the decorating.

The promotionally effective pairing of the two artists into the musical and artistic media also serves the stylization and mythologization of the whole Karajan world, in which everything is beautiful and noble and perfect.

第50屆Grammy Awards10日在洛杉磯揭曉。Simon Rattle在EMI灌錄的布拉姆斯德意志安魂曲,拿下最佳合唱大獎,Garrick Ohlsson (1948-)在Bridge Records錄製的貝多芬奏鳴曲,拿下最佳獨奏獎。James Ehnes在2006年灌錄的Korngold、barber、Walton等人的小提琴協奏曲,拿下最佳協奏曲的大獎。

同樣由ONYX發行的新唱片,Ehnes灌錄的Elgar小提琴協奏曲,據說在演奏方面也有不錯的成績。

On the DG CD (447 440-2) whose photo you posted very early this morning, you will only find item #2.

It is, rather, on DG (Centenary Collection – 1956 Sviatoslav Richter) 459 018-2 that you will find all three items #2, #3, and #4. I think this CD is still around.

Also, #2 and #3 are found in Volume 84 of Philips's "Great Pianists" series (456 952-2).

I am quite sure that it's not a must for non-Richter collectors, because:
1) it's the fastest of Richter's 6 versions, not to everybody's taste I am afraid;
2) it's a mono recording, and the piano's bass register is rather "dumpy";
2) there is a supreme 1961 London recording in stereo on EMI (encore).

On the second forthcoming Supraphon CD (Shostakovich and Chopin) you mentioned this morning, the selections of Shostakovich's works have appeared on Supraphon and Ultraphon; while the selections of Chopin's works have been issued by Praga before (more than once). Since these CDs are not often spotted in Hong Kong these days, the reappearance of these performances on a new Supraphon CD is a piece of good news.

But let us spend judiciously. I should think most of us will be fine with Richter's Shostakovich and Chopin from the large supply from Philips / Decca.
