I am sure there are people out there trying to create masterpieces, but please do not forget our music industry is very different form the past, where artists were patronized by wealthy nobles, merchants or the churches. They were proud to have "their" music performed in public so that they were recognized as patrons of the arts (similar to donating money to universities so that the donar's name is engraved to the building).

Nowadys the music industry is run by big conglomerates that control most of the channels for the distribution of music, and their primary goal is profit and not creativity. Hopefully the internet will give us new way to discover new and fresh music.

What you are talk about is Neo-classicalism.
some example:

Prokofiev symphony No.1 `classical'
Shostakovich's `Prelude'
Stravinsky's Symphony in three movements

For contempory music you may have a detail explanation from encylcopedia, I have not heard of any one those piece anyway.

Last night listened to Mahler's symphony No.1 conducted by Bertini.

"My whole life is contained in my two symphonies. In them I have set down my experience and suffering, truth and poetry in words. To anyone who knows how to listen, my whole life will become clear, for my creative works and my existence are so closely interwoven that if my life flowed as peacefully as a stream through a meadow I believe I would no longer be able to compose anything." - Mahler

The first symphony was the symphony he was working on when he write the above notes to a young woman named Gisela Tolney-Witt, and the first symphony was about first love and rejection he experienced at that time.

In the first movement, Bertini start off well by depicted the awakening of nature and early dawn most vivdly. In the third movement (The Huntsman's Funeral) Bertini's slow tempo put much weight to the famous melody, and in the final movement, the orchestra was sreaming to give `sudden cry of a deeply wounded heart'. I would rank this along side Kubelik as the one of best intepretation of this work, together with demonstrative grade sonic, I think this version would be my reference in the future.

Thank you for your appreciation, but Mahler's symphony is more than music alone, to fully apprieciate it, I have to be prepareed emotionally and spiritually, and most of the time I have to carry out a study before each listening session.

As you have noticed, I have finish the so call `Wunderhorn' (young magic horn) symphony already, in which Mahler showed us his love for nature, query for life and religion. Thereafter Mahler undergone great change in his life as well as his music, I think this is the right point of time to have a small rest before I carry on with the `Instrumental Triology' (that is the Fifth, Sixth and Seveth symphony)

Just bought this cd version. 2cd ofr $1xx quite good value.

Very easy listening, but I don't know anything of the concert? Looks like it is very famous.

And why 2007? they hold this concert every new year?

What you have was the recording of 2007 new year's concert in Vienna, it was played by Vienna philharmonic Orchestra by different conductor each year, the played waltz written by the Strauss family each year.
