For those not familiar with the Leak TL/12, it is: An audio power amplifier. Output is 12 Watts at 0.1% distortion Was acclaimed at the time to be Britains Best audio amplifier, and is highly sought-after today by high-end audio enthusiasts all over the world. Background The following text is an extract from an historical note written by H.J leak in late 1951 (the full text is available in the 28-Page "Point One" booklet listed below.) To set the context of the following extract, it should be realised that Leak had been making a feedback amplifier known as the Type 15 since 1945, and that this amplifier had similar low distortion (0.1%), but was costly to produce, and was a four-stage circuit. "In 1948 the problem of costly production was surmounted when we abandoned our original 4-stage circuit of 1945 for the simpler, more sensitive and completely stable 3-stage circuit of the TL/12. The basic TL/12 circuit was evolved in 1947 by H. J. Leak for use with feedback cutter-heads, and the circuit was so stable that feedback magnitudes greater than 40db could be obtained over the loop containing the three stages, the output transformer and the electro-mechanical circuit of the cutter-head. We realised that with this new circuit we had the opportunity of offering a superlative amplifier, but with our high-grade labour it was essential to use the most advanced techniques of manufacture and to ensure quantity production if the price was to be kept low. We knew that the very large orders necessary for quantity production would come only if the amplifier gained world-wide acceptance from three main classes of users: 1. Professional audio engineers representing the communications industries (broadcasting and recording companies, telephone, telegraph and cable companies, Public Address and diffusion operators) and also those engineers in the distributing branches of the radio industry whose main interest is high-fidelity reproduction. 2. The non-technical music-lover or gramophile. 3. The knowledgeable amateur enthusiast (the "audio hobbyist" of the U.S.) who had previously built his own amplifiers for reasons of economy and/or personal satisfaction. With these requirements before us further development work was carried out on the basic circuit and on the physical details, and the TL/12 in its present form was launched in December 1948, together with the RC/PA pre-amplifier. Features A review of advertising literature from the time reveals many desirable features in the TL/12 that are sought after today in high-end audio amplifiers. Below is a listing of the key features of the amplifier: Push-pull triode output stage, with 400 Volts on the anodes A Leak triple-loop feedback circuit, the main loop giving 26dB feedback over 3 stages and the output transformer (hence the "TL" designation). No H.T. electrolytic smoothing or decoupling capacitors (oil-impregnated paper-dielectric capacitors are used) Distortion 0.1% Hum and noise -80dB Frequency response: +/- 0.1 dB 20 Hz to 20 kHz Damping factor: 20 (Regulation of 0.2dB) |

I have a pair of Klangfilm 6S Ela 2805 which I am very happy with but I still like KT66 more. --------------------------------------------- CP I should show you the VT75 with 12.1. Much better to my ears : )  |

| [#8191] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user I am sure if you put your Marantz 9 into a modern spk with low effiency, it will beat 12.1! Oppositive, if we put some px4/px25/2a3/300b/6L6 into a high effiency spk, the looser might nbe 12.1 as well! hifi is mix and match. |

| [#8199] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user I would be very cautious in buying a pair of Leak TL12+ without knowing the codes of the output transformers. For 8 or 16 ohm output impedance, the output transformers should have 8615 or 3921 stamped underneath. This silver pair of TL12+ do not have the output impedance selectors on the side covers, so they could have been used for public address with 100V line transformers. From the photos of the back, just above the speaker connectors, you can read "line output". Even if the transformers have been rewound for 8 or 16 ohm impedanace, they will never sound the same. | [#8200] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Good morning! Hon - Yes! The output transformers were originallly made not for home/monitoring uses. Besides, the seller added so many "tonics" (補品) means the sonic signature of the original 12+ design cannot be achieved after the rewinding of the output transformers. It may also mean that the rewinded output trans did not sound good in the view of the seller before he added so many "tonics" hopefully to increase ambience (small caps in parallel), strengthen bass (added filter capacitance), etc.. Who know how good/bad the sound has become? Two bad's don't make one good! The simple advice is keep AWAY from this pair..! |
