[#8250] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Is it alright if one pair of Leak TL12.1 consists of one open and one closed type? Will the sound be affected? Thanks!

[#8252] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Is it alright if one pair of Leak TL12.1 consists of one open and one closed type? Will the sound be affected? --------------------------------------- http://home.mira.net/~kiewavly/Leak.html Production Variations The TL/12 was manufactured from December 1948 to about 1955. During this time several variations were made to the physical aspects of the amplifier, however the circuit was always the same. Some of these variations are: Early units featured a bronze finish enamel, and later ones gold finish. The possible change-over date may be around 1952/53. Early units had open-frame transformers, wound on fully-cheeked bobbins (not un-like those used today), and the wiring from the transformer coil to the terminal plate can be seen above the chassis. Possibly around 1952/53, transformers with pressed-steel shrouds were introduced. Some TL/12 amplifiers around this time had a mix of open and enclosed transformers on the one chassis. Very early units have the power transformer core parallel to the output transformer core. This seems to have been quickly changed so that all subsequent units have the power transformer core at right-angles to the output transformer core for reduced induction between the two. The paper HT capacitor was originally 4 x 4 microFarads in the one block. Variations include: 2 x 4 MFD, plus 1 x 8 MFD with various earthing arrangments that commoned-up some of the earths inside the can (but there was always a separte earth for the single 4MFD acting as filter input capacitor keeping heavy ripple currents out of the audio circuits). Special purpose units were produced for the BBC and other communications organisations that featured transformer-coupled inputs with an attenuator to operate with studio audio circuits that use balanced 600 Ohm interfaces. http://home.mira.net/~kiewavly/TL12_50yrs.html

[#8254] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user The pair of resistors are connected in this way, if my memory still serves me well: Input +ve from preamp -- 120K resistor -- +ve of input of LEAK amp -- 47K resistor -- Input -ve from preamp-- Ground of LEAK amp ![]()

[#8255] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Last night, I decided to fire up my recently acquired Leak Stereo 60. I don't have a variac, so I just plugged the old boy into the mains. I thought: "Why not?", the original owner's son whom I bought the amp from had already plugged it in a few weeks ago and he told me that it just hummed. At least I knew the output transformers are not open circuit! Yes the ST60 did make a loud hum and one EL34 didn't have any emission although the filament still glowed. A good EL34 was plugged in and I switched the gain from hi to low and vice versa a few times. I finally got some sweet music by pressing and holding the gain switch down at the low gain position. From the circuit diagram I found that the low gain position is connected to the RCA phono sockets with a potential divider and the high gain position is connected directly to the octal socket for a Leak pre amp. I remember Steve Spicer showed some instructions of how to clean the sliding switch. However I will bypass the switch later. Initial impression of the ST60 is that it sounds very clear with more power than the ST20 and TL10. I had a pair of TL25+ a few years ago, it is too long ago and I cannot compare their sound from just my memory. In a few weeks time, I will replace the out of spec components and hope to use it as my main amp to drive a pair of AVI Neutron III speakers. Regards Hon

[#8256] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Good morning by pressing and holding the gain switch down at the low gain position ---------------------------------------- Hon Thanks for sharing : ) I also want to by pass the the switch. I have the same problem. I selected an easy method. I I used a teeth stick and stuffed it under the switch to make a tight contact :=( See : ) ![]()

| [#8257] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Good morning, John. Just received an e-mail from member Wing ---member name as 'carpet' in r33. He likes the Eico HF-85 bought from me a few days ago. Now he's finding proper power amps to match with it and his speakers (LS 3/5A if I remember correctly) to his musical taste. I told him before that your system is very musical in playing music and you are kind to help too. Maybe he's a little shy to contact you directly? Would you mind if I give him your e-mail address?
