[#826] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listen to Bach's Art of Fugue last night. Bach's music was the fountain of inspiration for many composer, Mahler was one of them. When Mahler composed his first four symphony, he was still a young man, full of all kind of fantasy, from the awakening of nature in symphony No.1, death and resurrection of symphony No.2, hymn of praise to nature of symphony NO.3 to the heavenly life of symphony no.4. Every symphony was depicting a scene, a vision, an idea or a emotion which Mahler have clearly outlined in his score. Fifth symphony however was a purely orchestral work, Mahler became a admirer of Bach at the turn of the century, and his admiration was most evident in the `instrumental triology' in which Mahler started to utiltize the technique of `counterpoint' writing. (from encyclopedia: The term counterpoint describes music that features two or more melodies played at the same time as distinct from music that basically has one melody supported by chords). Fifth symphony was indeeded the most conventional symphony among Mahler's symphony, the final movement was actually a Rondo which reminded me of Mozart, and the first and second movement can be considered to be one movement and make this a traditional four movement symphony. To deepened my understanding of Mahler's Fifth symphony (actually this symphony was quite well known to me already) , and look at it from a fresh propective, I decided to followed the path of Mahler and revised the Great fugue written by Bach. ![]()

[#835] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, listened to Mahler's symphony No.5 played by Bertini. Mahler suffer from a serious intestinal haemorrhage that almost take his life at the time he write his fifth symphony, he also found the love of his life and married with Alma Schindler and he was also appointed as the Director of Vienna Philharmonic. The first movement and the second movement was a funeral march, but with light of hope this time. The third movement was a happy and springy Scherzo in which the trouble can be put aside (reminded me of the Scherzo of Beethoven fifth symphony). The fourth movement was a passionate sweet love letter to his wife and it was one of the most romantic moment in music history. The fifth movement was a Rondo, in which Mahler utilize the cunterpoint technique put down one of the most brilliant finale ever, this movement can be consider as a theme of victory after conquered the suffering of life. Bertini's verion pace was fleet, although his urgency generate some excitement in Finale, but the mystery and the struggle seems to be lacking in the first two movement, the fourth movement was played however with a heartfelt delicacy. I was introduced to this symphony by Sir John Baritolli and I can say that I am quite familiar with his version, his version was justly famous except that I found his Finale lack drive and energy. He was my reference until I heard Barshai's version with Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Barshai get every thing right and present all five movement in a balance and convincing way, the pace was rock solid, yet every gesture, every emotion was present with the passionate playing of these student player from if Klemperer have recorded the fifth symphony, it would sound like this. ![]()

[#837] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I have attended the live concert by Edo de Waarts and HKPO last year, a rewarding experience indeed as I have never heard Mahler symphony No.5 live. I would like to draw your attention to the painting of Klimt, who live in Austria more or less same time as Mahler, I hope you can get the impression of art circle at that time. Also it is the best illustration for the fourth movement of Mahler symphony No.5 ![]()

[#839] HK Ballet/Romeo and Juliet 23/03/2007 HK Ballet/HKPO/Prokofiev/Romeo and Juliet Shatin Town Hall I attended last night's performance at Shatin Town Hall, less for watching the ballet and more for the opportunity of hearing the complete score of Prokofiev, one of my favorites. Hence I was really stunned by how the whole thing came together. Shatin’s more humble scale meant a more crowded stage, some compression in the visual lines and a little loss in grandeur, but the gain in intimacy proved more vital. Even from my upstairs seat it was obvious this is a stunning production. This is from choreographer van Dantzig’s 1967 work, fully 40 years ago! Despite “old” influences of Graham and Balanchine, it speaks to us eloquently and did not seem dated. Most enchanting was the detailed, psychologically and musically considered choreography for Juliet, full of exquisite details and fabulously danced by Faye Leung, who looked absolutely the part. Her acting is on the same exalted level as her dancing, conveying the girlish Juliet’s every turn of thought. This is a gem worthwhile on any stage in the world. Unfortunately, her Romeo, Zhang Yao, was tentative and wooden. The rest of the cast is excellent. I would think the set, costumes and lighting contributed just as much to the total experience. Van Dantzig’s contemporary van Schayk’s sets were simple yet functional, and I must give special mention to his costumes which utilize the full palette. Under the splendid lighting of Alice Kwong the eyes just could not take in all the details. The set pieces and stills in the back look like paintings from the time of Romeo and Juliet and totally appropriate. I almost forgot to mention the music, for which I went in the first place! The HKPO in the pits, aided by the excellent acoustics of the hall, played splendidly and with class, and most importantly, con amore under the conductor Richard Bernas. This is emphatically a total experience. In its ability to “sing” it beats most opera productions. It IS a wordless opera. Watching the ballet made me learn so much more about the music I thought I knew. The final act struck me as Tristan merged into Gotterdammerung, so Wagnerian in its sweep and complete in its totality. This is even more of a masterpiece than I had thought, the most flesh and blood of classical ballets. I heard a lot of sobbing in the audience and that’s proof enough of success. My hats off to everyone. The same cast shall appear in the 2:30 performance on 24/3. Different principals shall dance the other 2 performances, 7:30 on 24/3 and 2:30 on 25/3. Go!

[#840] HK Ballet/Romeo and Juliet Wow, must I buy the set for JUST this one??? --------------------------------------------- This is not a must unless you are her super-fan. I've just finished disc 1 (Mozart) and 5 (R. Strauss) and am not able to comment on this boxset. But, with her usual high singing quality, I believe, as a whole, it is worthy to buy. JUST for a live recording of "four last songs", there is a better choice. As the coda of Ms. Elizabeth Schwarzkopf's memorial boxset, there is her 1956 recording of these songs. Compared with Ms. Janowitz's, this recording is VERY fine, at least. I got it in HK records for HK$128 only. Tempting? 20 June 1956 Live at the Royal Festival Hall, London Philharmonia Orchestra/ Herbert von Karajan ![]()
