[#8485] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Then we changed to a pair of Siemens Klangfilm monoblocs, with the rest remained unchanged (i.e. same CDP, same EICO ST-84, same BC1, etc). The Klangfilm monoblocs each use 2 pairs of EL34's, i.e. 4 numbers for PPP amplification for higher power for threater or cinema. To my surprise, the bass is a bit lighter than the 240 and the mid to high was better. In this listening room with the BC1, I think the Klangfilm is more suitable. :) ![]()

[#8486] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Then, we tried the facinating, tiny monoblocs, the German small watter V73. These are push-pull amps but I agree with Hon entirely, there is SE magic in the sound, particularly the mid to high ranges.

[#8487] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user CP told us that the V73 has a low input impedence of 600 ohm, not the usual 47K. So, V73 should use the matching preamp with low, matching output impedance. Obviously any conventional preamps will NOT do their job well before the V73, including the Maxium passive-pre and the ST-84. There should be a lot potentials of the V73! I would be the second to bid for, after Hon. :) Note: In the case of a passive-pre, the high output impedance of a CD player would become the real issue. So, a passive-pre can not help much.

[#8488] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user At this juncture, we tried the FISHER 80C mono preamps with the V73, to see if 80C's cathode follower can help the low-impedance in V73. (Photo below borrowed from my own.) ![]()

[#8490] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user The 80C has obvious roll-off at approximately above the 12K Hz range. I put my finger to the 1uF electrolytic output coupling capacitors. Believe me or not, you can compare with my own pair with the caps replaced by non-electrolytic ones.

[#8491] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Gingers Congratualtions getting the 12.1. In fact I was determined to get the pair but I felt asleep waiting for the bidding to end. Note I was still winning at 1:00am? I tried to read a book and then fell asleep. It is pleasing though to know that they got a new caring master. I have to start from scratch again for the search. You are quite right, the KT66 is a pair of Radio Craftsmen C500. But they didn't perform well yesterday.

[#8492] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user We also tried the Rogers white-belly 15 ohm (s/n. 29,xxx ?) and the KEF piano black 11 ohm LS3/5A. In the environment without big and soft furniture (e.g. sofa, curtain, etc), LS3/5A's proved themself more balanced in the mid to low range. We finally came to a pair of Radio Craftsman C500, which is obviously very good and I predict will be even better with GEC KT66 tubes. What a relaxing afternoon we had yesterday. Thanks CP for the drive, the music and the hospitality! :)

[#8495] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Why is there an additional transformer and can capacitor among the tubes? ------------------------------------- I think it was due to the previous owner's itchy fingers. BTW, thanks for CP lending me to try an interesting miniature tube that substitutes 12AX7.

[#8497] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user It's great to meet Hon, Richard, John and Patrick. They are all very knowledgeable. Mind you, Hon is a PhD. We are both enginners so got alot of common interests. Richard, thank you for the kind words. I think some of the sound we got yesterday was really awful, in particular the Klangfilm 2805 and also from 3/5a. I have to blame the acoustic environment. If business turns out better, I certainly will try to have some acoustic treatment. I don't need that much space for motor research. As suggested by Hon and Patrick, I might get a pair of ESL57 to make it complete.

[#8499] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user The other single TL/25+ just arrived. A lot of test and auditionings to do next week. I am also waiting for another pair of interesing amp to arrive. Here's the description : "This is a Hammond 2-channel tube amplifier from a Series E Hammond organ. This amplifier uses a pair of 7591 output tubes in one channel and a pair of 6GW8 tubes in the other channel. It also uses three 7247 driver tubes; one 6CA4 rectifier tube; one 5U4 rectifier tube; and a 12AU7. The amp comes with all the tubes pictured (DOES NOT INCLUDE THE 7591 nor the 6CA4 tubes). This amplifier is designed to run high frequency speakers in one channel and low frequency speakers in the other channel." Will try on the Kef piano wood.
