[#8645] 顧聖嬰 george1977, trollope: MANY thanks for posting about this. I am touched, and most obliged. I wonder whether I can still get in the bookstores the set trollope mentioned... As for George1977, may I propose to one day actually listen to THIS LP in my system? I'd also like to take this oppotunity to test out some equipment I have, namely A to D converters. I have this facility in 2 guises, in the form of a Marantz CD recorder and a Tascam DAT recorder. If we then get the 2 CDs that come with the book, we can compare the sound quality. Not thatthat's the point, just an excuse for more listening... |

I have no problem at all to bring my LPs for direct A/B comparison, unless and until you got the twin CDs. Would Trollope feel interesting to join us? ^.^ george1977 |

Trollope, You again gave me a surprise, three CDRs which enclose Ms 顧聖嬰 was delivered to me yesterday afternoon but I only received it this morning, what a pity that we could not encounter and missed this chance twice already. Another duplicated copy of CDR about the recording of 顧聖嬰 , I presume, is reserved for doctorjohn. Million thanks and I have owed you a lot already! ^.^ Right now I am listening to CD2, the sonic quality might not be audiophile level but fully acceptable to me, what a wonderful night to listen a gifted pianist playing Debussy "L'lsle Joyeuse", Chopin's Scherzo No.3 and those gorgeous chinese folk songs. Her refined fingerwork yet crispy pace with wordless poetry and inner beauty really astonish me in the tracks like Chopin Etudes and Scherzo No.3, no wonder she won a prize in Geneva Piano Competition! The death of this lady was really a lost to chinese people and culture. Also thanks for the attached interview articles and concert program when she played for HK audience in 1962, I will show to my dad in order to let him reading tonight. Without your contribution, this thread could not shine!! I have no alternative but to take off my hat for your sharing and knowledge George1977 |

Good evening George1977, [1] Naturally I have listened to the two CDs several times. The Chopin pieces in Miss Gu's hands are free from the sort of loud and polished emotions that are actually one big dreadful bore. [2] You are right about the intended ownership of the duplicated CD-R, as I thought doctorjohn would also like to have a copy of Gu's renditions of Chopin instantly after the test he had in mind (although I could scarcely make out what that is, being a hopeless hifi illiterate myself). [3] Indeed I have photo-copied Miss Gu's 1962 HK concert programme specially for your father, whose credentials of "身為左報文藝版的記者亦曾經在1962年於大會堂聽顧聖嬰演奏蕭邦" are something honestly to be proud of. He commands the respect of all who love literature and music. I hope that age has not dimmed the fire and enthusiasm in his heart and in his pen. I hope also that those pages would bring back to him some fond memories of that late summer in 1962. [4] It is more than kind of you to have said those final words in your message, which, I assure you, are not necessary here. But as the compliments are uttered, I will look forward to the pleasure of your company in a dimsum lunch when a time that suits us both is found. I really couldn't say when at this moment, as I have a rather tight travel schedule this summer. ![]() |

MANY tahnks to trollope. Being a person with a "socialist/communist" bend (especially in view of current rampant unethical capitalist financial manipulations and barely disguised neo-colonialism) I have much sympathy with many leftists of yore, though not at all with the "cultural revolution". In some ways, if this world continues the way it's going, I think revolution, and communism, shall appear again on the horizon. Which makes the disappearance of artists that much more regrettable... |

Good Evening Trollope Sir, [1] I Can't agree no more with you! [2] At least Doctorjohn needs not to wait fixing his CD burner nor did the A/D conversion. As a fervent music lover he is, he does not care much about whether the recording itself is audiophile or not. Most importantly, the music itself can touch our soul in the end. [3] My dad has read your photocopies already and helped his return of almost-gone memory , the night he attended including the recital concerts in City hall and Po Hing Cinema. As a young reporter (28 years old in 1962), he just did his job to report a gifted pianist from motherland having his recital concert in a British colony, but he could not forget his impetus of buying Ms. Koo's vinyl EP; "I was simply overwhelmed and obsessed after her recital, an unspeakable beauty and spontaneity I have ever come across". said by him after reading your articles and listening your CDRs side-by-side. As a witness of that debut concert, he feels pity, outrageous and mournful when he had been told in 1975 that Ms Koo committed a suicide during cultural revolution. His testiness against such irrational and collective ferocity deterred him to join the underground party, a sensible decision which I am always pround of my dad! On behalf of my old man, million thanks for your kindness and generosity! Such a sweet but melancholic evening! Wish Ms Koo rest with peace! [4] Please don't bother the time and I owe you a treat indeed! I am looking forward to your return in September. Carpe Diem! George1977 |

[#8657] No period pains This is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on period instruments, played with considerable flair with Hogwood conducting the AAM in London in September 1988. Bearing in mind also that it took Furtwangler in 1942 more than 20 minutes to complete his voyage of the "Adagio molto e cantabile, Andante moderato". Solti's (1986) timing is nearly 20 minutes too, but that's a version I don't enjoy at all. All in all, I doubt Hogwood's wisdom of using such a sprung rhythm in this movement; but then he claims to have a direct line to Beethoven about the metronome markings. Well, despite the ring of truth, does beauty matter? This authentic-instrument performance breezes into B9 like a breath of peppermint air. No qualms about the record sound. It has plently of weight while remaining 乾 and 爽. ![]() |

[#8658] Instrument shortage hello trollope, I agree with you. And it's usually the case when 'supposedly-large-scale' symphonies like those of Beethoven (perhaps we're so used to Wagner's orchestration) are being played by the 'authentic' school, one feels something's lacking and at times '太 brisk' - although such playing does offer some freshness and '爽'. I just came across Gardiner playing B5 & 7 on Archiv and I couldn't bear the lightness. That's it... p.s. Klemperer's (EMI) 3rd mvt is surprisingly short (given he's (notoriously?) slow) at only about 15 mins; so is his 2nd mvt! |
