[#8625] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user music22, Thank you for sharing your result. The Klipsch Heresy II is only 4 ohm, so I used the 4 ohm tap. I did try the 8 ohm but the 4 ohm tap sounds better. The main purpose of the test is to compare the Leak and the Knight, both use 6BQ5. The Leak Stereo 20 is a perfect match for 3/5a in many occasions and I wanted to check its versatility. Another reason is I got terrible sound from the Klipsch when driven by Klangfilm EL34 pp, even with KT66 from QuadII or Leak TL/25+ I still cannot get satisfactory result. 6BQ5 seems to be a better match but how come a famous and pricey Stereo 20 not sound better than a dirt cheap American int. amp? In contrast to your result, I found the 3/5a much better even in my listening area of over 500 sq. ft.
As you can see, I also tried some strings and orchestral music. In terms of vocal music, there is yet no speaker better than the 3/5a.
But for violin and vocal, I can actually hear the horn resonate or ring at the upper mid range. I am thinking of getting some felt to damp the horn to see if it would be better.

4-ohm winding may be the culprit, unless the OPT used those Patridge type winding?

6BQ5 seems to be a better match but how come a famous and pricey Stereo 20 not sound better than a dirt cheap American int. amp?

the four-ohm winding of the Knight may be more desirable than the leak? or the impedance matching is accidentally better?

try those 2A3 etc SET? to get a full-winding 4 ohm you can use a 5K:8ohm, or 10K:16ohm single-ended OPT and use it as an 2.5K OPT for a 2A3?

I did enjoy the Macau trip. Macau has changed a lot since my last visit about 6 or 7 years ago. It is much more modern nowadays. There is no doubt that the casinos have brought a lot of money into the city.

I will leave HK this Sunday, so I will not have time to try your Marcoff phono stage. But I will be back on Chinese new year's eve, hopefully you will have some spare time to organise another vintage hi fi audition. I'd like to hear your Linn LP12 with your Roksan phono stage.

I used to listen to the Leak Stereo 20 with LS35a and ESL57 frequently. Both speakers are a perfect match to the Stereo 20. Perhaps that's why the ST20's price is so high in ebay. I only paid 200 pounds for my ST20/Varislope pre amp and Troughline mono tuner in 1997. Those days when vintage hi fi was much cheaper had gone.

I am trying my best not to be poisoned by your excellent photos of amps and caps :)

I was tempted to spend some real money on some paper in oil caps on my Leak 12.1 but I just don't think the price of these exotic caps is justified. I will stick to my cheap RS caps.

I will work on my Stereo 60 in the next few weeks and will report my progress with some photos. I will also run a proper listening test using the AVI Neutron and Chartwell LS35a.

hi, just to share my listening experience at gingers home even though already moons but i still can remember. maybe i prefer kt66 to el84. to my ears, st20 is far behind compared to st50, rca & 12.1 that played. it's simply too much of sibilance.

Agree that the 12.1 is the champion, in particular in Gingers' place. I believe his palce is filled with a toxic substance, poisoning everyone with his 12.1.
However, in my place I still prefer the sweetness of St20 compared with the other very good KT66 amp that I have. I don't think the St50 can really compare.
