| [#9242] 史溫格歌手 (Swingle Singers) 超越界限的音樂傳奇 史溫格歌手 超越界限的音樂傳奇 文李秋玫/聯合書報攤 除卻了樂器伴奏所產生的樂律問題，無伴奏的人聲，是音樂中最純淨的聲響。如果您喜歡「國王歌手」、喜歡「不封口人聲樂團」，就不能夠不知道成立已有四十多年歷史，舉辦超過三千五百場音樂會，贏得五次葛萊美獎，被譽為無伴奏人聲始祖天團的「史溫格歌手」！ 巴赫配上爵士節奏，初試啼聲一砲而紅 這知名的人聲樂團，名稱來自於它的創團者沃德．史溫格，這位住在法國的美國人在一九六二年首先在巴黎創立了一支小合唱組，名為Double Six當初的六位歌手主要為電台節目伴唱最熱門的流行歌曲和早期的搖滾樂。由於時常擔任歌星的背景伴唱，因此歌曲多為無詞的配唱。一天，史溫格在鋼琴上練習巴赫《平均律鋼琴曲集》，在場的歌手們突然發現巴赫的器樂曲相當適合改編成小組合唱，且不用另配歌詞，擅長無詞伴唱的他們靈機一動，乾脆用無意義的母音來吟唱。也因為如此，史溫格開始大膽嘗試，用巴赫原作配上爵士搖穠爾`奏，沒想到兩者的搭配出奇地融合，更充滿了新鮮感。剛發行的專輯雖然在法國銷售不甚理想，但在美國卻一路攀升，加上電台的DJ特別喜愛在廣播節目中播放這張專輯，使得這張Bach’s Greatest Hits獲得空前的成央C據史溫格自己的回憶：「當時這張唱片錄製的目的，頂多想拿來送給親友聽著玩。」沒想到初試啼聲的專輯，便高居唱片銷售榜的前十位，並且蟬聯了足足一年半的時間。往後的他們更踏上表演領域，在十年間錄製了十二張CD，並且展開世界巡迴。 一九七三年，史溫格突然宣布解散團體，卻在移居英國後另起爐灶，除繼續發掘巴洛克、文藝復興早期音樂及更多古典與現代曲目外，英國傳統牧歌更成了最大的資源。優秀的成員及曲目看似順利，然而，第二代的史溫格歌手卻面臨了一個難題，原因是在第一代團體解散時，史溫格曾應允團員：即使重組合唱團，也不會再使用原來的名字。可惜的是「史溫格二代」、「新史溫格合唱組」的團名反而引起不少誤解。所幸得到法國原班人馬慷慨首肯，才讓「史溫格歌手」重新樹立，延續這個閃亮的品牌。 成員才八位，能唱出樂團般豐富的聲響 「史溫格歌手」的曲目相當廣泛，從古典、跨界爵士、流行與民謠都有精湛的表現。曲風多變，但不變的是精準的技巧及優美的合聲效果。他們拿手的樂曲不僅有巴赫、莫札特、貝多芬的器樂曲，連耳熟能詳的《大黃蜂進行曲》、《匈牙利舞曲》、《星際大戰》電影主題曲乃至柴科夫斯基的《一八一二序曲》都能夠詮釋得淋漓盡致。成員一共才八位，但這個團體就像是人聲樂器一樣，能夠唱出樂團般豐富的聲響。不僅如此，他們還受到了現代作曲家的矚目，二十世紀義大利最有影響力的作曲家魯恰諾．貝里歐就為他們寫過一首名為《序曲》Sinfonia的混聲合唱，這首作品由紐約愛樂伴奏首演，之後便由史溫格歌手在全球演出，也成為貝里歐當年演出最頻繁的作品。而知名的服裝設計大師聖羅蘭更曾為他們設計團服，讓他們的舞台動作及畫面更為亮眼。 聽「史溫格歌手」歌唱，總有種舒適清新的感受，那是因為他們很少直接用飽滿的音量，而是經常採用輕音量的假聲加上麥克風擴音來詮釋，也因為這樣，他們可以盡情使用大量的噴氣、舌音、口技及爵士的擬聲唱法，達成不可思議的美感。灌錄的專輯中，就曾首度完整地將嘻哈音樂常用的beatbox那種人嘴模仿，製造打擊與旋律效果融進莊嚴的巴洛克音樂中。雖然他們也跟世界頂尖樂團同台，然而無伴奏的合唱卻也能夠維妙維肖地使用人聲模擬各種樂器，讓歌聲也伴有節奏、絃樂的線性、甚至金屬樂器的音色。 史溫格的改編手法，造就了新的歌唱方式 「史溫格歌手」成左滬鴞]，除了超凡的演唱技巧之外，更難得的是他們抓住了巴洛克音樂和爵士樂共通的精髓，那就是基本的律動和即興色彩。人們萬萬想不到兩者其實都有基本的流動感，也都允釭簅t者在旋律線條上即興裝飾。事實上，史溫格在自傳Swingle singing也回憶道：把巴赫的作品改成爵士版，原則上是不需要太大的變動，一切都很自然而然地化為另一種音樂。也就是說，他對古典原作的更動不大，但卻是一個全新的聽覺經驗。再者，沒有歌詞的演唱更跨越了語言的界線，也因此，無論聽慣古典音樂或者流行爵士。都能夠被這種音樂型態所吸引。史溫格的改編手法造就了新的歌唱方式，也帶起音樂家們以更寬容的心態接受各類音樂，在推廣上更是奶ㄔi沒。如今，史溫格還成立了樂譜公司出版自己改編的合唱樂譜。四十年來屹立不搖的音樂傳奇將在台灣響起，史溫格的歷史也將有您的見證。 無伴奏人聲始祖天團 史溫格歌手 http://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/PIC0002/144306/web/  |

| [#9244] A lost feeling from The Rite Of Spring (Telarc) I finished the Rite of Spring (Telarc CD-80054) in last evening with a lost feeling. The Telarc is a good recording even it is one my reference CD to test audio system. However, after compared the Telarc recording to Raymond's live recording of the Rite of Spring that performed by local symphony orchestra; I created myself an unreachable standard for the best spot in listening to classical music, a very much higher standard in music play back from audio system. I also realized that it is so hard to get same quality of recording in the commercial market with my home audio system. May I share with you my great experience earned from Mr. Raymond Lo? Raymond is one of the rare hi-fever men I met in HK, according to my understanding; Raymond is the first user of FM Acoustic, and after a short period time in using the FM Acoustic he passed the FM to his daughter for casual listening. He invested a few million HK dollars in building his utopia – a studio with most expensive recording equipments. A studio sized no more than 100 sq.feet. The 24-channel console from UK cost more than a million HK dollar already. Raymond is not makes money for his life from it. All these expenses are just for his hobby. Raymond make his recording for satisfying himself at the beginning, but now his recordings are being used for reviewing the performance (mistake) being made by the artist in the local symphony orchestra. The recording is to capture the sound as listen by the conductor in the stage. As far as I know one of the microphones was being hanged in the height of 10 feet above the head of the conductor. He also did the editing and mastering by himself. The time he spent in editing and mastering for one hour music is as long as two weeks of time! What a serious attitude towards his hobby! Raymond plays a few uncompressed 32/96 DVD, 24/96 and regular CD recordings that made by him with his profession set up! AMAZING....! I never listen to classical music from the spot of conductor on the stage, the music is so DETAIL!!! The dynamic is so huge that I never experience in any home audio system which including the live performance in the concert hall. One possible reason is that the recording is to intimate the music signal being received by the conductor on the stage instead of most of us the seat with many feet away from the stage! After the first few minutes of music play with The Rites of Spring, my eyes were wetted by tears! I never able to listen so clear of flute, horn, clarinet, bass drum, cymbals, violin, viola and even the double bass, the image is so clear that enough to let me feel the movement of the finger and body of the artist, even their breath and mood feeling! With the real time coaching from Raymond and Master Kwong, they make me more clear the definition of the uncompressed dynamic, micro dynamic, transient, details…etc the famous hi-fi terms among the audiophiles! I doubt how many people are really understood and experience the truth definition these hi-fi terms. I think the artist, the conductor are the recording engineer are part of the expert able to tell us. My new idea about the best spot to listen the classical music is the spot of where the conductor stand on the stage… ha ha! Without the "close-to-the-true" recording from Raymond I never able to recognize the performance of the HK artists is unbelievable good! Without the "close-to-the-true" recording from Raymond I never able to recognize the commercial CD/LP/DVD are limited in dynamic and details. | [#9249] 令人振奮的管弦樂 intro 上週末與一班朋友在西環酒吧把酒言歡, 言談間我的手提電話鈴聲響個不停, 使人狂聽不已的管弦樂一出, 坐我對面的教授友人 (他亦是古董音響及古典音樂發燒友!)即刻詢問 同樣的問題小弟11年前在英國亦一度問過幾個同學, 全體一致認為 "One of the Timeless Songs of Our Time" 這首百聽不厭的英式搖滾傑作由滾石樂隊 (The Rolling Stone) 元老級成員 Mick Jaegger作曲, 真的很難相信 Mick Jaegger 寫下炫耀動人 的管弦樂 Intro! 喜歡英式迷幻搖滾風格的樂迷，不用我多說應該都會喜歡這首 The Verve (神韻) 的代表作，Bittersweet symphony (苦樂參半交響曲), 男主唱 Richard Ashcroft 滄桑的嗓音, 混雜華麗不朽的 background 管弦樂, 令人振奮的旋律, 勵志的歌詞, 悅耳的節奏, 難怪 美國總統候選人奧巴馬的選舉班子亦找這首歌曲宣傳他們的選舉主題 "Change", ! I was introduced to R33 by my brother in Hong Kong just about the beginning of this year. I have to say I spent most of time listing my records here and taking no interest in other parts in this site thinking that it was just about Hi-Fi gears. How wrong have I been? I just happened to tune in this forum and I was reading your reviews on many classical music. First of all please allow me to salute not only your deep knowledge about the presentation of particular piece of music but also the in-sight analysis of musicians who play the music. I am saden to notice that many "enjoy" the sonic result produced by their expensive Hi-Fi equipment but forget to "feel" the music and let the music "go and grow" in their heart. It's nearly midnight in England(where I live now) and I promise I will come back and read more from you. BTW, I notice that you also like modern Rock music and you mentioned Verve, Coldplay and Snow Patrol etc. I also listen to Rock and classical. My all-time-great is Joy Division. I first saw Snow Patrol when they supported Grandaddy in Norwich many years ago. If you have room in your selection do audition Doves and Elbow I think you may like them. Chi |

But I have to make clear that some articles are written by other contributors, I am just responsible to dig it out and sharethese quality reviews, or to share my audition feeling in a clumsy manner. My fellows Chankaiming, Trollope, Doctorjohn, kh33, cpsjj, trazom, minpin, Erictang also wrote some fantastic articles to educate me and entertain others a lot! I still have a lot to learn from them, they are my mentors and good chaps to discuss music. Agreed with you that most audiophiles nowadays like to pay attention on "sonic" difference produced by their ridiculously expensive gears (or vice versa) rather to digest the fine music, this shortfall exists all the time because the change of sonic effect sometimes grasp more attention than the music-making, the ends which we should pursue and internalize...... I like music-making at live concert and feel curious of the recording skillset recently, an art which I am pround to explore! Apart from my all-time favourite classical music,I like rock, jazz and even electronica music. no matter what form these artists expressed their feeling through. Indeed many hall of the fame rock stars (Paul McCartney , Roger Waters)wrote lots of classical pieces in their late years, even my favourite band QUEEN also made a fabulous crossover with soprano Caballe and infused lots of classical music into their works such as Bohemian Rhapsody. Another hair-metal band "Scorpions" also made a wonderful crossover with german orchestra several years ago, ...... Members of modern rock bands are graduates who received classical music training and studied classical music in their initial stage. Therefore we could not deny the influence of classical music which inspire their subsequent composition in rock genre. I was pleasant indeed when my British (also Dutch and French!) classmates brought me to visit Glastonbury Festival several years ago hearing the live performance, a thought-provoking process when I was just an exclusive classical music freak. Otherwise I won't listen those epic and endearing rock pieces of Verve, Coldplay, Muse, Queen, New Order, Radiohead, Snow Patrol, Metallica, Eagles, Cranberries, Pet Shop Boys, Fletwood Mac... a list going on with uncountable artists.... Please share more with us in respect of rock music and thank introducing me other rock bands I am unfamiliar with... ^.^ (you are welcome to set up a new thread "what rock music you are listening to..?" george1977 |

Peole may dislike certain type of music but no matter what language you speak, what race you are or how old you are most will love clasical music. The older I get the more I enjoy classicals as they draw your appreciation in different way. On my younger days back in HK, I listened to Bee Gees, C.C.R because when there was typoon the TV stations would stop the normal boardcasting instead music videos by these artists were being shown. I still remember the first LP I bought was The Doors. I bought it from Tsang Fook Piano Shop(Some name like this, I think) in Ocean Terminal. The last Glastonbury Festival I visited was in 1995. I remember Oasis and Pulp were there. I don't like Oasis very much because their songs sound all the same to me apart from a few. I prefer Stones Roses though and what a shame they didn't last long. If you like classical element in rock I think you can try Durutti Column(mainly a one-man band by Vini Reilly), Antony & The Johnsons(beautiful vocal),The Blue Nile(crossover between jazz and rock), Can(a German band with hugh influence on Japan and the others) and Sigur R鏀. It is clear to my ears that RR-70CD is sonically superior to the Telarc CD-80054! I will keep searching the Philips version which suggested by Hercules and my classical music trained cousin.
