The finish of the TL12.1 chassis looks superb. Am I correct to say that the price is about HK$270 to strip the old paint and respray with new paint? That is a bargain price. In England, it will probably cost double to get a car body paint shop to do a similar job.

The Best Signal Resistor?

Over the past twenty years I have tried numerous types of resistors in almost every conceivable position in my own projects. Choosing the "best" signal resistor for your audio project is an alarming exercise and can lead to madness! The perceived sound quality differences of the various resistor types in audio circuits is, to some extent, subtle, subjective and personal. However, below you will find my impressions.

- Metal film resistors should be avoided. Most of them have the tendency to
sound "cold". Ok, some metal film resistors, including Holco, Beyschlag,
Philips and possibly some military grade types do not sound too bad, but I
always missed some of the warmth!

- Although metal foil resistors, the “High-End" choice of many audio
manufacturers in general sound excellent, I still find the sound somehow
“artificial“ and not really worth the high price.

- Also metal oxide resistors are not my preference, since they give a blurred
midrange image.

- Carbon composition resistors by Allen Bradley, Vitrohm, Morganite, Ohmite,
Xicon, Kamaya etc. sound excellent, natural and warm. They are less
unaffected by vibration. These resistors are my preferred types, although
tolerances and temperature stability are poor. There is also the issue of noise
which, to my ear, is not really prominent or annoying, not even in moving coil
amplifiers.

- Riken Ohm carbon film resistors approach almost the warmth of carbon
composition types but without the poor noise, drift and tolerances. They are
an excellent replacement for them!

Yesterday I was at the home of an longtime customer from my Camera
Store and discovered he was also a vintage audio enthusiast. We began
talking TD124s etc when he made a seeming outlandish statement that he
had the king of vintage amps- a Goodmans industrial pre/power amp with
10 pcs of KT66 for the single output channel!

I was skeptical but sure enough he dragged me outside to his garage and
there it was- a pre amp on top and a full enclosed 30cmX50cm X60cm
power amp with two rows each of 5 OSRAM smoked KT66s! I didn't
remember to look for the name badge so it is possible he got confused
with the brand.

He asked me to see if anyone I knew had a spare one so he could get
stereo....;-)

I had to see him again today so I took a camera.

The unit was an amplifier for an laboratory vibrator. It came from a
US university. It is designed for 10Hz to 10KHz and being scientific
lab gear would probably be something like +/- 0.25db so I guess it
would be pretty flat for one more octave to 20KHz. It is tetrode
mode and to get 500W or so out of 10 KT66s it must be full class B so
I doubt it would sound very good anyway....but with so much power to
spare I am sure you could reconfigure it for class AB triode and
still have a nice 80wpc or so!

It looks like it would weigh a couple of hundred Kg...and that is
just one channel!

Pics are in a folder marked Goodmans 500W amp...look under "G" as the
photos section is a bit jumbled at present with lots of photos not in
folders.

The internal was not re-sprayed. I specifically ask them not to. There are some grounding connections and I rather keep it that way rather than scratch the paint again. I think the cost is about the same even if you want the internal done as well.

Only this day can I get access to the internet. It has been wet and dim all day since my arrival on Wednesday. Anyway, can keep good mood. :)

After a few day's rest to get over from time lag(serious this time: got up at 2:00 a.m.; started to feel sleepy from 4:00 p.m.. haha! Today I am much better.)

Pang - Have you tried the EL33 in your TL/25A already?

YC's decision is correct. If the inside chassis were sprayed, there will be poor grounding though the internal will look beautiful.
