(listen music without a condom) Who knows it would NOT be the opposit? :) ---------------------------------------------- Eric, Having said so (the 2nd statement above), I would like to add the sounding of an amp depends on far too many LIMITING factors which may go beyond a tube may dictate. With a bad designed/constructed tube, we MUST have bad sound. With a well designed/constructed tube, we most LIKELY have "bad" sound too. For a number of occasions I heard amps with directly heated tubes sound not even jige (Mandarin, i.e. qualified) as a high fidelity equipment, not to say the subtle sonic characters of DH tubes. Only on one occasion I feel I could taste the DH-tube's sonic character (driving a pair of Lowther) but, at the same time, the transparency of the music was as if coming from another condone, a transparent condone though. :) Regards, Richard |

| [#9477] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user That I have nothing to say if you found Indirectly heated tubes sound more transparent than than the directly heated tubes, like PX25, PX4, 300B, 45..etc Of course, not to talk on a wrong design. no matter what tube in use is bad. that is 'things' beyond the tube itself. Structurally speaking, direct heating driving the control grid directly, very sensitive and sparkling fast response buthte drawback is controlling the hum. Indirect heating driving the grid behind the cathode, one more element in between, lower hum but.... |

| [#9480] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user New tube caps were bought for my 37.1 :-) ------------------------------------------- John, try to get the vintage tube caps than the newer Chinese tube caps if possible. I found the new ones have much worse metal quality though they plate it with silver. Not sure if it affects the sound but it surely affects the contact. |
