After reading 邊個邊個's link on Washington post, I wonder what will happen if Joshua Bell play violin at 08:45am in Kowloon Tong MTR station, the most likely outcome was Bell's violin was broken into pieces after Joshua Bell was knock down by the crowd rushing for life. He do the right thing in a wrong time and at a wrong place.

Last night, I listened to the Brahms and Schumann violin concerto played by Joshua Bell, his playing of Brahms' violin concerto was clean and passionate, his tone was polish, this version can rank among those from the great violinst of the last century. His playing of Schumann's violin concerto was even better. In fact, Schumann's violin concerto was a romantic and tuneful work which should deserved more attention, Bell playing was nothing but beauty, I cannot think of another violinist who can play this neglected violin concerto as good as Bell.

All in all, Joshua Bell violin playing should worth much more than USD$ 32 per hour provided that he preformed in the right time and place.

Listened to Shostakovich's piano music in the weekend, that is his Prelude and Fugue played by Tatiana Nikolayeva. Shostakovich wrote these music after he was inspired by Tatiana Nikolayeva' playing of Bach's music, it is not surprising that the music rooted deeply in the tradition of Baroque music, but you may found the trace of 20th century here and there.

I just finished listening to this CD from the library.

I have always been a Tennstedt fan since I attended his many concerts with the NYPO. He literally breathed fire.

This CD is no exception. Fiery, dynamic Beethoven and a most poetic Oberon overture.

Wow

早晨...

對!tennstedt這張ring orchestra music選段就要比maazel telarc版來得精采高明。 兩個BPO的演出也是截然不同。

Last night, listened to Bruckner's symphony no.1, this was still his early work, but Bruckner was already 41 years of age when he composed his first symphony. If symphony No.0 still followed the tradition of early romanticism, then symphony no.1 must be a work that was deeply influenced by the music of Wagner. Those long and endless melody and earth shaking brass remind us that a era have begin and a great composer have born.

Tintner conducted the early unrevised original verion which was quite different from the usual `Linz' version, recording is good and the performance was majestic.

I remember some fellow brought up the question why there is no new classical composition. Only until recently, I have been thinking about why so many people like classical music and somehow classical music never lose its popularity. Is it because of its upper middle class status? The groove? or What? Fellow citizens here inspire me to further explore this old school pop music. Base on my own assumption, I have derive that music appreciation is the appreciation of history on time and place. What we treasure is actually the historical theme behind the music. All great music has its historical value behind it like Woodstock.

Well, I am still a sperm in the Woodstock era :) , but I assume why Woodstock was so appealing, why everybody was enticed, why it went from who the FxxK cares to a must go was the lineup of musicians and the passage behind its music. Back then, the music had power and its message could change the world. Peace!

Another one analogy must be Hip-hop. When Hip-Hop first started, it was built on a foundation of truth about the inner city, it resonated with blacks and whites because of its truth. But it was blown up by nineties society. When the major labels and aspiring musicians were all in it together, when the hip merged with the mainstream, then the public had no choice. There's no longer one scene, but many. Furthermore, like the major labels, big time rap consolidated and became about only a few boring themes in bitches, hos and cash. Not very stimulating, aren't they? Especially, when you compare current rap content to some of the old public enemy political agenda in its rap content. With choice, people will go elsewhere. Like me, I am on my way to becoming a classical buff and I suspect that Hip-hop is not coming back unless the genre itself find new meaning to its musical truth. I guess hip-hop will survive, but only as a shadow of its former self like classical music.

Last few days listen to:
Haydn's Creation,a masterpiece that rank amongst J.S. Bach Mass in B minor and St.Mathew Passion. The recording was in 1969 by Karajan and Berliner Phil. Though he was often criticised as mannered and shallow, here he was in superb form creating an atmosphere that suits the music. The playing of BPO was splendid as always. The individual soloist--Jonowitz,Wunderlich,Ludwig,Fischer Deskau,Berry all in top form and were hard to surpass. All these were record beautifully with superb details ,dnd dynamics.
A DGG lp of debut performance by Conelia Vasile,a Rumanian born violinist playing Paganini's Caprice and Ysaye's sonata no.2.What so special about her was that Ivry Glitis declared'Her playing is better than Milstein and Szering combined". Here her playing is strong, intense and effortless that make these technical demanding pieces seem like a piece of cake.
Another recording is Eternal LP of Beethoven piano sonata-Apassionata- by Dieter Zechlin. The recording soung is very natural, the playing is sensitive, refined, yet authoritative. This is a pianist seldom heard but is worth listening and exploring.

Listening to this excellent new Naxos CD in office. Although Rachmaninov live in the 20th century, his music live in the 19th century. The music was most tuneful with a strong sense of sorrow, it was a tribute to the memory of Rachmaninoff's mentor, composer Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, who died tragically. I think comparison with Tchaikovsky's piano trio, which was also a tribute to the great pianistNikolai Rubinstein, was most interesting.

I think my investment of $49 to try this new music was very rewarding.

Listened to Oistrakh's playing of Brahms Double concerto last night, this is not the famous version with Rostropvich but the earlier 1956 version with Fournier, they played intimately but the recording sound dated.

It was followed by Prokofiev's violin concerto no.2, I always love this concerto especially the second movement, Oistrakh playing was most sensitive, again the recording lack the presence of the best recording today.
