Go tonight if you can!!!!!!!!!! 20/04/2007 HKPO/American Visions/Zhang Xian CCCH I am glad to report the HKPO returned to excellent form under the strong conducting of Zhang Xian. Despite the fact that I am not really a fan of American classical music, this is one of the best concerts of the HKPO. They deserved much more attention than the pitifully small audience can muster. The concert opened promisingly with Bernstein’s Candide. The orchestra for once seemed like a horse dashing out of the gate. Just a bit of raggedness did not displease. The second piece was actually the world premiere of the revised version of former LAPO tympanist William Kraft’s 2nd tympani concerto, written for the SFSO, scored for 6 large and 9 small tympani reaching up to “A” 440 arranged in a circle that is virtually 360 degrees. No recording yet exists (the first I believe was recorded by the LAPO under Mehta). The 84 year old composer was present and he was humorous, despite the inadequate presentation of Kathy Lam (can HKPO stop this narrator business?). Although I am not a fan of Boznos, he did well enough considering the kung fu moves needed. He had to turn all the time, sometimes swiftly, sometimes hitting the small tympani with BACKWARD thrusts, and even his feet were kept busy with the pedals. To be fair, his tone was better than when he was in the back, but he seemed to be not powerful enough last night and somewhat monochromatic. The orchestra was tight. The piece? Not bad for a modern piece but long for a tympani concerto. Second half was rearranged. It began with Barber’s Adagio. Zhang Xian turned to speak to the audience in Mandarin and fluent English, asking for silence after the piece in memoriam of the victims of the Virginia massacre. The Barber was played beautifully in a moderate tempo and was not sentimental, though for me dynamically it peaked just a bit too early. Miraculously the audience followed her instructions after it ended. A beautifully shaped and played Copland’s Lincoln Portrait was spoilt in some degree by the inadequate narration of American Consul General James Cunningham. I was surprised, for one in his profession, by his lack of oratory skills and nobility when reciting Lincoln’s texts. A Chinese translation narrated in Cantonese or Mandarin would seem to be a better idea in this piece. If we can have Chinese and English “narrators” (Kathy Lam and vance Lee in this instance) introducing these works as some kind of lip service, why not go the full length and have English speaker one night and Chinese speaker the next for the Copland? Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess bit showed off Zhang’s powers. She coaxed an idiomatic performance out of the orchestra and even managed a good degree of swagger with the jazz influenced idiom, not an easy thing with this orchestra. Certainly De Waart cannot do that. The strings were tender, the winds mellifluous. The horns played beautifully, the brass unlike Sibelius in chorus. Even the metronomic and monochromatic percussion section managed a bit more color than usual, but I have to say Stefanescu sounded almost callous in the Gershwin and that put me off. The HKPO also missed a great opportunity to introduce unusual instruments to the audience. Personally I’d like to know more about the differences between the marimba, xylophone and vibraphone in the Kraft and between all the saxophones in the Copland. Introducing those would have meant more than the superficial “narration”. Bravo to Zhang Xian and the orchestra. I’d like to hear Zhang again in the more common repertoire, SOON. The small audience was appreciative, and gave a long applause at the end. |

| [#990] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I listened to Bruckner's symphony No.4 conducted by Tintner. Bruckner's symphony was probably his most well known symphony, overall it is optimistic and coherent. Tintner's view was majestic, he let the melody and detail sing under his slow but sure tempo. Comparing with Bohm's classics version was interesting enough, the tension Bohm built up in the two final movement was breath taking, while Tintner view was more heavenly. Recording was trueful with a deep and wide soundstage.  |

One of the great things about Tintner's series to me is the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. I have almost never heard a bad recording by them on Chandos and Naxos. A greatly under-rated orchestra that always give their best. This is another great one.  |

| [#993] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Yesterday, listened to Brahms's Piano concerto No.2, Emil Gilels collaboration with Jochum was expansive, authoritative yet sensitive. I particular love the piano playing of Emil Gilels, whose playing was thoughful, romantic and earth shaking, make this concerto sound better then ever.  |

( classical mus Thereafter, I turned to Shostakovich's symphony No1-3, symphony no.1 was written while Shostakovich was still 19 years of age, but the music have the characteristic of a great symphony composer already, it sounded like a hybrid of Prokofiev and Mahler. Symphony No.2 was a symphony with choir subtitled `To October' and it was written in memory of the October revolution. Symphony no.3 was of similiar nature and was subtitle First of May' these are some new experience for me nevertheless.  |

| [#1002] What are you listening to? ( classical mus CKM, The versions of Brahms 2 that I can recall: Gilels, 2 Richter(Leinsdorf and Mazel), Zimerman,Brendel,Barenboim,Pollini and Geza Anda. I find Gilels most convincing and suits my taste. Another version I don't have and want to collect is by Wilhem Backhaus. |
