| [#1005] What are you listening to? ( classical music) To celebrate this thread reached 1000 post, listened to Beethoven's symphony No 9 last night. I choose Karajan's 1977 version, widely regarded as the best recording of this symphony. Karajan pace was steady and middle of the road, neither too fast or too slow, the gorgous `Berlin sound' was a result of the long term relationship between Karajan and Berlin Philharmonic. What distingish this recording from more than a hundred different versions was in the final movement, the quartet of soloist sing mavelously, and the sense of joy and excitment was unexpected from Karajan, who was well known to be a cool-headed conductor. All in all, fully justified its legendary status.  |

( classical music) I do not have the Gilels/Reiner Brahms version, though I have their Tchai. piano concerto which I consider the best version amongst the too numerous recording. Listen to Karajan Mahler 9,the 4th movement last nite. Rumour was that Karajan did the rehearsal 99 times before the performance. Here the BPO players were driven to the limit.The playing were the most beautiful, the dynamics were the widest possible, resulting in an effect that were overwhelming and overpowering. |

If you love the music of Paganini, you will love the music of Vieuxtemps, these music are tuneful, romantic works. This recording on Naxos is of very high standard, clear recording together with clean playing from the unknown violinist Misha Keylin.  |

| [#1015] What are you listening to? ( classical musi 邊個邊個, I also have the disc you mention, personally I found the recording not too satisfactory, so I give this away to my aunt. My favorite recording of Beethoven violin concerto was by Schneiderhan and Jochum for the sweet violin tone of Schneiderhan, Grumiaux and Colin Davisfor the elegant palying of Grumiaux and superior sonics, and Shumsky and Andrew Davis for their romantic style of violin playing. For Sibelius, Oistrakh performance was authoritative, but the version I owned was on Vox box (now on Melodiya) with a red hot playing and superior recording. Other version I deeply love included Heifetz ( stereo version), Lin (Sony) and Chung(Decca).  |

| [#1023] What are you listening to? ( classical musi I got this while I am crossing border. Definitely a Strong Buy for 12 RMB only. The works are a good mix of pieces including his entire 2nd symphony (Martinon, LSO), the Overture to Prince Igor (Solti, LSO), Polovtisan Dances, (Solti, LSO), The Steppes of Central Asia (Ansermet), and pieces from his other compositions in string quartet on track 2, piano solo by Ashkenasky on track 4. For a part-time Classical listener like me, I have no problem with any "the best" compilation. ^_^  |
