( classical music) Tonight, I visited HK city hall to listen HKPO & Kolja Blacher (violon & director). 1st half: Haydn sym. no.39; Mozart sym. no.33 2nd half: Beethoven violin concerto in D The 1st half is normal. The 2nd is great. It is the first time, I listened this concerto in live, the impact to me is really strong. The sound of violin is warm, sweet, it made a good harmony with the orchestra. I think my HIFI system can not produce this effect forever. Near the end of 1st movement, there is a cadenza (solo by violin), it is very different from my CD versions. The program guide didn't mention it for details. According to the program guide, there should be a PIANO version violin concerto in D. Does anyone heard it before? Any CD available? I feel interests to try. |

| [#1046] What are you listening to? ( classical music) Finally got my Horenstein Mahler 3rd lp,it was worth the wait and money. Though the recording sound is not outstanding and the playing of LSO is not amongst the best,Horenstein made this a must own version,the bonus is the superb singing by Norma Procter. From the first few bars you feel this is special,the intensity,control, pace and dynamic contrast grab your attention,bringing you to the scene where Mahler had written this piece, and the last movement is sublime. |

| [#1048] What are you listening to? ( classical music) Yes, the candenza was written by Beethoven for the piano version of the violin concerto. Kremer played this candenza in the following recording, and on top of that, he added the original piano part to the candenza, which effectively turned it into one for piano, violin and timpani. Highly recommended. I also had lots of fun at the concert. In particular, I totally fell for Kolja Blacher's intonation. He produced a very unique penetrating sound that shot through the hall like laser beams. This effect was not diminished in any way even when he was playing pianissmo and pizzicatos (I actually felt being "shot" when he played the two pizzicatos towards the end of the first movement!). His slighly urgent and unpretentious reading of the concerto was also a treat. Even though his fluency didn't quite match that of Rapin's who performed the same piece with the HKPO last year, this was probably inevitable in order to achieve the articulation in the dynamics changes throughout the piece. A truely memorable evening.  |

| [#1049] What are you listening to? ( classical music) I also attended the concert of Kolja Blacher playing Beethoven's violin concerto last night, it was really a memorable evening. Hong Kong City Hall was well known for its warm acoustic, I can never forget the warm violin tone of Hiliary Hahn when she played Brahms violin concerto here. Last night, I got the last minute ticket and found that the hall was already 90 % full, I can only choose a seat in the front row directly in front of the Cello section. Kolja Blacher was a student of the great violinist Sendro Vegh, and he act as conductor and first violin at the same time in the first half. The Hadyn and Mozart symphony was a urgent reading that was clearly influenced by the `Historically informed Practice', the playing of the string section was clean and transparent. However, it was Blacher playing of Beethoven violin concerto which stole the limelight. Blacher's violin tone have a silvery sheen, his technique was clean and accurate. Although I found his pace was too fast sometimes (Schneiderhan elegant playing was my referenece), Blacher's playing was passionate and rooted deeply in the romantic tradition. Not surprisingly, he received standing ovation from the audience, he simply cannot leave without playing an encore. All in all, an enjoyable evening.  |
