(classical music) Heifetz playing of Brahms Violin concerto was my reference for many years, without doubt he was simply the best in terms of technical finish, but if I want one version that I could sit back and enjoy, I will always reach for sensitive playing by Stern, passionate playing by Vengerov and elegant playing by Grumiaux.  |

(classical music) Recommendation by Hoi Gor prompted me to dig out my copy of Robert Casadesus playing Mozart piano concerto 21 & 24 with George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orch. His 24 was calm and serene with traces of sadness and melancholy that fit the mood of this piece,his 21 was olympian in the begining and tender in the slow movement. His playing was elegant with no loss of virtuosity and he had the full support of Szell ang his orchestra. Allin all a very fine rendition of these great piano works. |

| [#1095] What are u listening to? (classical music) Witold Malculzinsky playing Chopin Waltzes-another great Polish pianist worth exploring if you find Rubinstein too routine. A pupil of Paderewsky, MaLculzinsky was the exponent of great keyboard playing from Poland. His Chopin is full of atistocratic grace and flair, always romantis and at times ravishing. |

I listened to Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante and Cello sonata, Chang was a student of Rostropvich, it was therefore not surprising that she have a thick tone and faultless technique like her mentor. This is a powerful performance, I don't have another version to compare with but I found Chang's version very satisfactory already.  |

| [#1098] Sony/BMG Beethoven Complete Masterpieces Saturday at central PRO SOUND I was chatting with Mr Chu and he showed me this cheap box of SONY/BMG/ARTE NOVA production. Inside 60 CD's of almost the complete works of Beethoven. No booklet but an extra CD-rom E-booklet of complete notes. Although I had my doubts, of course I succumbed to temptation and bought it. Price? $ 4xx. You read right. Yes, for only four hundred something you never have to buy another Beethoven CD! Great for starters, but there are something here for everyone. I shall continuously post some listening notes as I go along. Some comments on a few items and content as follows: Discs 1-5: 9 Symphonies (Tonhalle Orchester Zürich/David Zinman) Discs 6-7: Ouvertures (Tonhalle Orchester Zürich/David Zinman) Discs 10-12: 5 piano concerti (Yefim Bronfman/Tonhalle Orchester Zürich/David Zinman) Disc 13: Violin concerto; 2 romances (Christian Tetzlaff/Tonhalleorchester Zürich/David Zinman) Disc 14: Tripel concerto; Septet (Yefim Bronfman/Tonhalle Orchester Zürich/David Zinman) *Zinman's Beethoven symphony cycles is justly famous (I have it). The concerti all have received TOP ratings. Disc 8: Creatures of Prometheus (Ballet) (Litauische Kammerphilharmonie/Karl Anton Rickenbacher Disc 9: Odd chamber and orchestra works. Discs 15-18: The 10 Violin sonatas (Pinchas Zukerman/George Neikrug) Discs 19-20: The 5 Cello sonatas + Variations (Anner Bylsma/Jos van Immerseel) * Just sampled Op69 and Op5. Anner Bylsma is my favorite "period-style" cellist. Excellent playing here to rival any team. Discs 21-25: The 12 piano trios (Seraphin Trio) Disc 26: The String trios (L’Archibudelli) Disc 27: The String trios (Kandinsky String Trio) Disc 28: Piano quintet etc (Vladar/Ensemble Wien-Berlin) Disc 29: Chamber music for Strings and horns (L’Archibudelli) Disc 30: Octet, clarinet sextet, March for winds (Mozzafiato) Discs 31-39: The 16 String quartets (Alexander String Quartet) * Sampled Op59/1 and Op74. Reasonable, but not with the top ensembles. Discs 40-50: The 32 pinao sonatas (Yukio Yokoyama, Charles Rosen, Vladimir Horowitz, Justus Frantz, Gerhard Oppitz, Robert Casadesus) Disc 51: The Bagatelles (Yukio Yokoyama) Disc 52: the Variations (Yukio Yokoyama) Disc 53: Diabelli-Variations + 4 piano pieces (Olli Mustonen) *Mostly by the unknown Japanese Yokoyama. Just sampled 1 CD and I think he is likely THE weakest link in the whole set. Disc 54: Songs from the British Isles (Elaine Woods/Carolyn Watkinson/Richard Salter/Helmut Deutsch) Disc 55: Christ on the Mount of Olive (Philadelphia Orchestra/Eugene Ormandy) Disc 56: Mass in C (Tokyo Oratorio Society/Ensemble of Tokyo/Wolfdieter Maurer) Disc 57: Missa Solemnis (Tonhalle Orchester Zürich/David Zinman) Disc 58: Choral works (Regine Crespin/ New York Philharmonic Orchestra/Thomas Schippers, Ambrosian Opera Chorus/ London Symphony Orchestra/Tilson Thomas Martina Arroyo/ Justine Diaz/ Camerata Singers) Discs 59-60: Fidelio (Gewandhausorchester Leipzig/Kurt Masur) More later...  |

Agree with your comment of Mozart violin sonata by Grumiaux/Haskil which I purchased recently (W-German version) and when I compare with that of Hilary Hann DGG version, the difference is rather distinctive. I wonder you have other version for comparison |

| [#1102] Beethoven Complete Masterpieces-CD18,21 -CD18 (***/5): Pichas Zukerman has always had a good tone when unforced. He plays well in the "Kreutzer", but less so in the later Op 96. Pianist Neikrug is a little artificail/mechanical sometimes. Note thse are the same as the ones in the 4-CD RCA bargain box set. On the net some prefer this to Zukerman's previous traversal with Barenboim. -CD21(****1/2) Piano Trio Op 70/1 Then I sampled this and was pleasantly surprised by the accomplished playing of the unknown SERAPHIN TRIO, originally issued on Arte Nova. The piano is fastidious and idomatic. The trio play tightly. One of the defects of this box is the lack of musician biographies. I had to hunt for these fellow on the net, and they turn out to be seniors! No wonder the musicianship is good: http://www.unm.edu/~finearts/about/publications/summer99.htm "...The Seraphin Trio has performed together for decades. The members are now all UNM emeriti professors: Robert, piano; Joanna deKeyser, cello; and Lenny Felberg, violin. In fact, Joanna deKeyser joined the UNM faculty because of George Robert, who played the piano when she auditioned in 1967. "I was bowled over," she recalls. Robert's recent performance schedule has included playing with the Seraphin Trio in three Albuquerque Chamber Soloists concerts at St Paul Lutheran Church; with a quartet in the Placitas concert series, and at New Mexico Tech in Socorro. Robert also plays in UNM faculty recitals, recently joining the New Mexico Woodwind Quartet for a Mozart Quintet for Piano and Four Winds, and performing in a recital by Oboe Professor Kevin Vigneau. The talent is reciprocated when the Seraphin Trio plays a program requiring additional instruments, such as a viola or bass. Often it is UNM music faculty who join the trio on stage.
