[#1145] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Zinman was influenced by `historical informed practice', his playing was urgent and lively and was perfect for the early symphony. But for symphony No.3, I really preferred the old school performance of Klemperer, the tension and atmosphere that distingished his mono `Eroica' was a benchmark by which all newcomers are measured. ![]()

[#1146] What are you listening to? ( classical mus chankaiming hing; Thanks for your information I still prefer those old school german maestro such as Klemperer, Karajan and Wand rathen than those version played by historical period instrument. Without the help of modern instrument, the sound is no longer romantic and monumental anymore The symphony 9 conducted by Furtwangler (Tahra) in 1954 is my all-time favourite by virtue of its operatic finale, sound simply gorgeous. I also like his interpretation of Beethoven No.3 Symphony Eroica" in 1943. George

[#1149] What are you listening to? ( classical mus chankaiming hing, Thanks for your attention! yes I born in 1977 and we are both the same generation. I just read all the posts written about you and find that you are very well-versed with lot of conductors and pianist. And you have been a father of a lovely boy, Congratulations! So lucky and happy you are! I once relied upon Penguin Guide and Gramophone as a purchase reference, after being cheated several times, I prefer my ear and rigorous audition as an absolute reference. For conductor, Karajan, Bohm, Wand, Klemperer, Kondrashin and Celibadache are all my favourite conductors. For Pianist, I am quite fond of Sviatoslav Richter Michelangeli, Pletnev and Argerich. For Violinist, I got a crush on Milstein and Kogan whom I regard these string maestro a class of their own. I recently love Hilary Hahn very very much! For Cellist, I love to hear Starker and Gendron Rostropovich. What equipment you use to replay your favourite classical recordings? In HK, I use Quad Amp to drive KEF 103/4 In Mainland house, I use Luxman to drive Tannoy. George

[#1152] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Mr. George1977, I have found some commons between your favourite with mine! For conductors, Bohm, Klemperer, Kondrashin and Celibadache are my favourites. However, I am surprised you will like Karajan, who is so different with the above 4 and sometimes too exergerate. As you may know Celibadache hated Karajan so much because of Karajan's showmanship. For Pianist, Richter, Michaelangeli, Horowitz and Argerich are my favourites. Violinist, definitely Milstein is my super star. I love Grumiaux too but don't have chance to listen to Kogan yet. I start to like Hilary Hann these days too but have not buy any of her CD yet. Starker, Fournier and Du Pre are my belove cellist. chankaiming hing, have you listen to Horowitz plays "Hungarian Rhapsodies"? It is a fantastic spakling version.

[#1153] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Cy Hing, Karajan can say he is just like a star, evreything he does is O.K. never more and never less, but lack of character. Anyway, he suspose to be a master on conducting those notes, just what I said music like foods, personal favour, salty or sour no standard at all!

[#1154] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Dave & Cylam hing Almost forget to include another 2 of my favourite Hungarian conductors, Fritz Reiner and George Szell. Carlos Kleiber is also my second-to-none choice for his Beethoven, Brahms and Strauss works. Cylam, you are not the only one who feel surprised about my fond of Karajan too, I admire his Karajan Sound by virtue of my personal favour of his Bruckner and Wagner recording, I was overwhelmed at the time of hearing his last recording with Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Bruckner Symphony No.7, as if a successful old man recalling his glorious life with remorse and introspection, as you know, he had a serious quarrel with Berlin Philharmonic Ochestra and suffered a painful back injury, I can feel what he felt through his interpretation of this masterpiece, a swan song for himself! Karajan is a highly controversial figure, some of my friend said his Karajan sound does not fit those Baroque and classical period works (such as Bach, mozart and Haydn), his over-smoothness and utter-polishing treatment did make some works losing its own trait. However we could not deny that his interpretation of Richard Strauss,Bruckner, Tchaikovsky and Wagner are either the best or one of the best reference version. In respect of his showmanship, agreed! I am particularly impressive of his self-indulgent and show-off style (eye got closed) when I watch his performance through DVD. But I did adore his pursuit of technical perfection through the rehearsal excerpt. As Dave said, music taste like a food, either salty, bitter, sour and sweet. You won't just have one or few flavours in your lifetime. Apart from classical music, jazz and rock are my favouite too cause I am still young, too young to go steady!!! Geogre ![]()

[#1157] What are you listening to? ( classical mus There's no such thing as a perfect conductor. I think we just try to listen to each man's vision, if he has any. There is little doubt Karajan, despite so much written against him, is a great conductor, a man of vision. Indeed his Bruckner belongs with the top versions. His repertoire and discography are astonishingly broad. His musical and structural sense never fails him, which is why daveycwong said: "...Karajan can say he is just like a star, evreything he does is O.K. never more and never less, but lack of character..." Not many conductor can even do that. But lack of character I cannot agree. His late Bruckner symphonies, the 64 Beethoven...his unique Mahler, and particularly his late live performances. I once listened to his Mahler 9th in Carnegie Hall. I have never since heard pianissimo like that. Greatness! The lush sound he gets is certainly not without character. His baroque certainly has character. I recommend this 70's version (not digital remake): This may not be "authentic", but the familiar Pachebel and Albinoni are trenchant, even haunting. ![]()

[#1158] What are you listening to? ( classical mus George, Thank you for your recommendation, I am especially interested in Karajan's Wagner performance, I am looking for this disc for a long time and hear a lot of good review about it, another Wagner overture I would recommend is by Klemperer. The system I am using is as follows: Consonance CD 2.2 Consonance tube preamp Classic 6.6 integrated amp as power amp Driving Tannoy HPD 385 in a custom made carbinet (I am trying to mount my speaker into the carbinet this few days, please don't laugh at me, I know little about Hi-Fi) ![]()

[#1159] What are you listening to? ( classical mus The 4 Schumann symphonies are my favorites. Karajan's cycle is the best IMHO. I tried to find a pic but was shocked to find that it is out of print. george talked about his excellent Strauss. My favorite is his earlier Metamorphosen for strings. NO other version would do. In this CD it's coupled with Janowitz's lovely singing of the 4 last songs, a version I rate just beneath Schwarzkopf. Karajan recorded for EMI, DECCA, DG, and almost everything more than once. It's important to know which version we are talking about. In general his last digital studio versions are to be avoided. ![]()

[#1160] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I also love Karajan's recording....sometimes only. His 1977 recording of Beethoven symphony No.9 was a miracle, you can hear the real sense of joy and excitement rarely associate with this conductor in the last movement. In Mahler symphony no.9 recorded live in 1982, he depicted the sense of despair most vividly, and his version can compare favorably with Baribolli or Haitink. How can I forget Karajan's Bruckner, but his best Bruckner was recorded in Vienna rather than Berlin, and the lush sound of Vienna Philharmonic was at least part of the reason for its success. How about his Brahms symphony? Brahms symphony no.1 simply filled with energy in his 1964 version. ![]()

[#1164] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Please do nt forget Bruno Walter, my beloved conductor. He is so humane and warm hearted. His Mahler Das lied von der erde is second to none. If you find Shostakovich symphony too heavy and exhausive, why not try his piano works. I listened to his piano sonata no. 2 by Emil Gilels. His playing makes this lesser known work much more listenable.
