| [#11711] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Messages copied from HKTAC, related to PCB poison used in TCC capacitors. But I have some doubt on John Atwood's saying about PCB having a "sharp organic chemical smell". I didn't find any strong smell from the oil from physically leaky TCC caps, unless TCC 0.25uF/500V in fact does NOT contain any PCB. Richard ------------------------------------------------------ >Dear all, > >I have been using vintage gears for some years and quite enjoy them to fill up my leisure time. > >It was until recently when I noticed from another forum talking about the health issue of oil capacitors. Some posts spelt out that oil >capacitors contain PCB oil which is very toxic and may led to liver Cancer. This may probably include typical oil caps as Vitamin Q, TCC, >West Cap,....etc. The toxicity is relative. Electrical workers who got PCB on their skin would sometimes get chloracne, a type of skin irritation. At the time, it was not considered otherwise very poisonous, as opposed to, for example, carbon tetrachloride. However, it was found that PCBs could lead to cancer in the long run - in some cases. To put this in perspective, many thousands of workers were exposed to PCBs directly from the 1930s to the 1970s, and yet there isn't a massive amount of cancer, unlike the situation with asbestos workers. However, the fear of legal liability is what has made PCBs to be considered such a scary chemical. PCBs were considered a major safety improvement when they came out in the 1930s, since they were flame-proof. Big oil-cooled transformers couldn't be used indoors because of the hazard of fire and explosion due to the oil. Installers were cautioned, however, to be careful if there was an electrical arc-over with PCB-filled capacitors and transformers, since poisonous fumes were generated (probably dioxins). In my experience with electrical components, I have only seen PCBs used in the rectangular or circular large paper capacitors. The manufacturer usually put their trade name for PCB on the capacitor (Pyranol, Inerteen, Dykanol, etc.). Many of these capacitors did not use PCBs - just regular mineral oil. You can tell by the smell (see below). I am pretty sure that Vitamin Q is not PCB. I have not seen PCB in small tubular capacitors, like the kind used in radios. >I am sorry to put up this question, absolutely not to scare any of you but would like to invite your comment whether this is really the case. >In short, may I have your comment on the following: > >a) Some oil caps appears sticky when we pick up them, is it a sign of >oil leakage. Yes, oil does often leak out, especially with old capacitors. >b) If Oil caps really contain PCB oil, what's your recommendation?, Go >ahead and use it, just wash your hand after soldering OR give up and >use newer generation oil caps or other type? You can tell if it is PCB by the smell. Regular oil has a mild "oil" smell, whereas PCB has a rather sharp organic chemical smell. Once you have smelled it, you will recognize it. >c) Even there is no sign of leakage, does the oil volatile from the caps as it is just next to the hot tubes? If you can smell the characteristic PCB smell, you should probably not use the capacitor. On the other hand, if there is no leakage or smell, you are OK. Regular oil is not harmful like PCB. >d) Finally, for vacuum tube, particular the vintage one, as health issue we need to pay attention. Mainly if there is PCB leakage. There are other hazards in old equipment. Often steel chassis were cadmium-plated, and in a humid or corrosive environment, the cadmium would oxidize. If there is a white dusty coating on the metal, especially if the metal seems slightly yellowish or green, do not inhale or ingest this! Clean it off and wash your hands. Cadmium definitely will hurt you. Soldered joints that are left out in the rain can generate lead-oxide (white corrosion on the solder). Again, wash it off and don't ingest it. Mercury is contained in some rectifiers, high-speed relays and switches. As long as it is contained in glass, it is safe. However, if the glass breaks, be very careful not to breath any fumes, and clean up any stray mercury. The temperature that mercury becomes volatile is just above room temperature. >I am sorry for my ignorance in these aspects. > >cheers It pays to put the toxicity in perspective. Millions of people have been working with tube electronics with its high-voltages, tin-lead solder, mercury-vapor tubes, etc. for over one hundred years without catastrophe. Warnings, of course, were given on things like high voltages and immediate poisons. One of the main reasons there was a 40 year delay in realizing the problems with PCB was the long time for cancer onset (and even then, the percentage of cancers was small), and its persistence in the environment, where it was picked up and concentrated in the food chain. For your best health, you should avoid PCBs, but they are not severe poisons. - John Atwood ----------------------------------------------- From the report, on page 3: "Are PCBs harmful? PCBs can enter the body in three ways: -absorption through the skin; -inhalation of PCB vapour (at room temperature, the vapour concentrations of PCBs are not significant); and -ingestion, if there is contamination of food or drink. The likelihood of becoming sick from PCB exposure increases with the length of time and the amount of material that a person might come in contact with. The most commonly observed symptom in people exposed to HIGH levels of PCBs is a condition known as chloracne. It is a severe, persistent acne-like rash due to repeated and prolonged contact of PCBs with skin. This condition has also occurred in people who have accidentally ingested PCBs orally. Very high exposure to PCBs may also cause liver damage and damage to the nervous system, resulting in numbness, weakness and tingling in the arms and legs. There is the possibility that PCBs may cause cancers." So, basically your vintage capacitors are safe even they may contain PCB, UNLESS you take out the content for inhaling, applying on skill as a lotion, or partaking as omega-3 pills. But when you saw signs of physical leakage of the content, no matter you are sure the capacitors contain PCB or omega-3, I would sugggest removal of the capacitors from use and disposeal in the proper way, i.e. not to be touched by others including your rubbish bin cleaner. I am not sure if the local Environmental Protection Department may have any advice. Burning out the content seems to be good to the environment because PCB can last for hundreds of years in seabeds and soil and remain in the food chain. Of course you must wash your hands thoroughly with soap after touching a physically leaky capacitor that contains or may contain PCB. Richard ----------------------------------------------- Nice Post John. When I had some older oil caps leak - I panicked a little until I did some research. I did not notice the sharp smell - this is the first time I've heard that but I remember being sure that they were PCB caps. Maybe they werent. Eventually, I even met someone who grew up playing on the Sprague trash dump back before environmental regulations. He was middle aged and OK. I heard about old ham radio operators using PCBs to cool their transmitting tubes - sticking their hands in it for years - no problem. My latest and final amp, a 2 chassis 211 set, uses a couple of PCB caps to bypass the HT unlytics. Mike |

| [#11725] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Chi does not have much change in his system except the "mod" done to his altec speakers and addition of external horns! This is the FIRST time I heard nice horn sound that made me changed my impression about vintage horn, which can be very good, can be non-shouting, can be very smooth, and can be natural sounding! Thanks for Chi as well! I have not taken any photo about Chi's pair of LEAK TL/10 which we didn't have change to try because one of them require some work. Gingers - Your turn to follow up on this!
