(2) Both KT66 amplifier. (3) Both less than 0.1% distortion. (4) Their chassis speaks for itself. Difference (1) UK/ US made (2) All C500A were made in 1953. The production period of 12.1 was much longer. C500A is rare. (3) RC500A is 15 watts and Leak TL/12 is 12 watts. -------------------------------- Alan Thanks. Any more? :-) |

This aims for lower coloration and higher transparency and faster speed. One stone for few birds. Just leave the sound on the magic of the vintage speaker and vintage simple power amp with very GOOD tubes. All the path vintages will tend to a bit slow, coloured, but strongest charecter that may not be everyone's cup of tea, to me I would like to retain some analystic, transparency and neutral on vintage sound base.^_^ jm2c. |

After that I found there are something missing in my gears, specially, in the speed, analystic and dynamic. After that, I try the PLP, it give me an fresh sound. At that moment, I am quit satifty to the Modern Preamp + Vintage Power amp + Vintage Speaker + Vintage Tube. Two months ago, my friend bring me a pair of DIY PX4 mono block give me a big impact. It have great high-low extension, analystic and the most important is the dynamic. Nowaday, I am quit confuse in the direction. Vintage Power amp compare to Modern Power amp???? Of course, Vintage Tube is forever WIN!!! Jeremy |

| [#11861] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Jeremy & all, Vintage power amp is good, like Leak TL12.1 and your RGD 1046, Marantz 8B..W.E etc. they are excellently good and no modern transformers can achieve their tone and emotions. Even diy high hands (not me), it's not easy to create something close to this legends. Of course if we are talking legends, they were chosen by millions of music lovers over decades out of thousands candidate of gears. Keep collection up and you won't have regrets. However, I'm also adict to diying single ended triode amps. Mainly because, I fell in love with high efficient vintage speakers (mine 12" Silver Tannoy too) and with them, can easily hear the more transparent, faster, juicy and cleaner music texture and tiny details with ALL sounght after triodes kings and queens, princes and princesses. WE300B, 45, 2A3, AD, RE604, PX25, PX4..etc etc. The music presentation of all these famous valves almost can kill. Why diy? simple, there is rare or almost no brand products vintage SETA. Time there vacuum tubes was for war and telecommuication and PA more than pleasure after WWII. We are lucky living few decades after the war and still have those 1930 triodes with us for enjoyment. |

This is much more sensitive than most other power amplifiers, and be inconvenient when using the power amps with other pre-amps, or when directly connecting a CD player to the power amp. It means that any small amount of noise in these sources can become audible, and the volume control may need to be operated only over a small section of its full action. A circuit for a low-gain Leak Stereo 50 amplifier has been developed. There are a number of ways of doing this, including replacing the first stage with a low-gain triode. However, the approach adopted here is to: retain the original valve line-up modify the first stage plate circuit to give reduced forward-path gain introduce a feedback compensation network for correct square wave response change the feedback components to reduce the overall gain by about 14dB The modified circuit requires about 550mV for full power output. The modifications are easily implemented, and can be removed later if it is desired to return the amp to its original circuit. |

I think most of us use a resistor-bridge to reduce the input voltage from the pre-amp. But there are also alternatives such as change the circuit as described below or to modify the input pentode to triode operation (this is actually used in some modified Mullard 5-20 amp). We should share our experience on this rather than comparing which pre-amp can best handle a 125mV sensitivity. |
