[#1225] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Recently acquired a box set of Shostakovich string quartet played by the Borodin Quartet, though expensive but worth it. I only have time to listen to 4 & 5, they were typical Shostakovich, dark, melancholic were trace of desolation. The playing are superb and examplary, really in a class of its own.

[#1227] What are you listening to? ( classical mus According to a pioneer research done by Einstein pulbish in 1952, playing music can change the atom and electron in your speaker cable, the wood of your speaker and certainly the composition of the capacitor in your amplifier and CD player. In his detailed report, he observed that the electron actually become `in phase' after palying music. This landmark report report was the foundation for a system sound more musical after playing some music, that also explained the mystery why the `million dollars' Stradivarius violin sound more musical than any other violin. Dr. Walter from John Hawkins University also comfirmed this fact, in a recent report issued on 2001, he proposed that not only the electron in metal and wood become `in phase' after playing music, the electron in our nerve or even our brain will become `in phase' as well, he studied the electroencephalogram of over a thousand subject and found that all of them have very active electric discharge in particular area of brain after listened to music they like, that echo the finding by Einstein 50 years ago. Dr. Walter also strongly suggest listener to have their ear wax clean, preferrably by a doctor before listening session, as he detected an further increase in electrical discharge in the brain if the listener hear music with a pair of clean ears. I am very sorry to tell you all the story told was just a joke only.

[#1229] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, listened to Dvorak symphony No. 7&8 played by Kertesz. I always think that Dvorak's 7th and 8th symphony were his greatest symphony rather than symphony no.9, maybe because I found his symphony No. 9 too well known for my taste. According to the booklet, Kertesz only study Dvorak's score on his way to London, it is quite surpirsing that the recording sound so fresh, natural and so well executed. The recording sound dated now, but Kertesz conducting was among the best. ![]()

[#1230] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, listened to Schubert's symphony 1,3 and 8 conducted by Colin Davis. Although Colin Davis were well known for his `let the music speak for itself' conducting style, the playing of the early Schubert symphony can bring out the charm of music, revealing it link with Mozart and Haydn. The `Unfinished' symphony was played majestically, music flow naturally. Although some may complaint that Davis' conducting are lacking in character, I found him serve the music quite well. The recording was trueful and of today's highest standard. ![]()

[#1231] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I received a mail from a friends read as follows, I hope he don't mind I post my reply in open forum: I am a newbie to Classical musics after introduced to Hi-Fi world a few months ago. I would like to start my own collection of CD's, DVD-A and SACD's. I wonder if you have a Top 100 "must have" list so I can somehow start. I don't mind going overseas to hunt those out-of-print CD's. Thanks I always strongly recommend newcomers to start with those `the best of the best in classical music' `the ultimate classical music' etc. Since you can hear everything from Baroque to Modern before you decide to go further into the sound world of one period or composer. But if you want a list of classic recording, the following list is quite comprehensive (although I don't agree with some of their choice) Gramophone: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/recrecordings.asp?composer=Beethoven+ Classical.net http://www.classical.net/music/rep/top.html Penguin Guide Rosettes http://www.classicaldigest.com/members/c-index.php?mode=x

[#1232] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listened to Smetana's Ma Vlast played by Kubelik and Boston symphony orchestra. Kubelik have a special sense of rthythm that all other conductor lack, he can make the music dance like a gypsy. On the other hand, he can also bring out the lyrical side of the music. However, he was let down by DG 's poor engineering, the recording was boxy with no bass at all, I could not imagine they were the same orchestra recorded in the same venue where Munch record Saint-saens `Organ' symphony 10 years earlier. ![]()

[#1238] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Seem that you are very interested in Mahler's symphony No.1, may I draw your attention to my old post amd my view of Bertini's Mahler set, I found Solti's version too superficial and finaly give it away to my aunt. "My whole life is contained in my two symphonies. In them I have set down my experience and suffering, truth and poetry in words. To anyone who knows how to listen, my whole life will become clear, for my creative works and my existence are so closely interwoven that if my life flowed as peacefully as a stream through a meadow I believe I would no longer be able to compose anything." - Mahler The first symphony was the symphony he was working on when he write the above notes to a young woman named Gisela Tolney-Witt, and the first symphony was about first love and rejection he experienced at that time. In the first movement, Bertini start off well by depicted the awakening of nature and early dawn most vivdly. In the third movement (The Huntsman's Funeral) Bertini's slow tempo put much weight to the famous melody, and in the final movement, the orchestra was sreaming to give `sudden cry of a deeply wounded heart'. I would rank this along side Kubelik as the one of best intepretation of this work, together with demonstrative grade sonic, I think this version would be my reference in the future. ![]()

[#1241] What are you listening to? ( classical mus There are not many good recording of Kubelik's Smetena/Ma Vlast, I have not hear other versions but only the Decca reissue LP. I believe it is at least better than the DG version. Though the recording quality is not that great, the conducting is amazing and Kubelik definitely monopolized "Ma Vlast"!

[#1243] What are you listening to? ( classical mus cylam, I am still looking for the famous live version of `Ma Vlast' recorded in 1991, Kubelik and conducted Czech Philharmonic Orchestra when he returned to his home country after 50 years of living in the West. Critics regard this as the definitive version of Smetana's Ma Vlast. However, I found Wit's version with Polish National Radio symphony Orchestra on Naxos very satisfactory, as you know poland was just next to Czech and their fate under the iron curtain was quite similiar, it is therefore not surprising that this `Polish' team can play `Czech' national music with heartfelt sympathy. Wit bring out the gravity of Smetana's music with a slow but firm pace, and Naxos engineering was atmospheric and clear. I would highly recommend this disc for its exceptional artistic achievement and and sonic quality. ![]()
