[#1246] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, listened to Piano Duo music by Rachmaninov played by Ashkenazy and Previn. I was quite surprised that Previn can play piano, I was even more surprised when I found that he can play it as good as Ashkenazy, I cannot differentiate which piano was played by Ashkenazy and which was by Previn, but the result was most romantic and exciting. ![]()

[#1249] What are you listening to? ( classical mus davecywong, My favorite concert Hall is Hong Kong City Hall, the acoustic is far superior to Cultural centre. I think you can have a try, I especially recommend Reiner's version as this version was widely regarded as the best both in terms of artistic value and engineering, it was recorded in the Chicago symphony hall by Robert Layton, the recording was dynamic and trueful, you can buy either SACD in 3 channel or CD in 2 channel, I have no SACD player but the old CD version was very appealing already. For backgrund information, may I suggest the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Also_sprach_Zarathustra_(Strauss) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thus_Spoke_Zarathustra

[#1251] What are you listening to? ( classical mus All the set you mention was wonderful, Gulda's Beethoven sonata was the best I have ever heard of, I have the piano sonata issued by Brilliant classics, and they are teh same recording as the box here, Wand's Beethoven are an excellent introductory set and Wand Bruckner are justly famous. My old comment on Gulda's Beethoven: Finally was my preference, Gulda played in a urgent, exciting manner. In the early sonata, the urgent flowing tempo revealed its link with mozart. In the middle period sonata, these graceful yet tasteful playing made the music soudn right. But the best of all was the `Appasionata' sonata and other sonatas coming from the `Storm' period of Beethoven. Appasionata was the fastest playing I have heard of, yet every gesture was handsomely presented. The Late sonatas were equally fine, comparable to Pollini but still lack the last ounce of poetry and inspirational quality by Kempff. Good recording except a hint of hardness on loud passage. ![]()

[#1253] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Accidentally bought this which is unexpectedly good.Originally I would like to buy the 'Late Vivaldi Violin Concerto' Vol 2 but instead I bought this Vol 1. Well it was equally good, as I am a casual classical music listener and prefer the Baroque music. Seemslike this is a rare piece of music from Vivaldi. ![]()

[#1256] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Sarah Chang certain is one of today's front rank violinist, have not heard of the disc you mentioned so cannot comment. But I strongly recommend Authur Grumiaux's `Favorite violin encore' on Philips or even better get the 5CD box of `Ultimate violin'. Grumiaux silky tone played everything from Bach to Bartok most elegantly, all are short encore pieces which never failed to delight. ![]()

First listen to this from the free CD attachment of 'Diapason' magazine. As far as I know he didn't write much opera. Did anyone know much about this piece of works? ![]() |

[#1259] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Myers hing, Bajazet is a pasticcio, which adapts arias from many other composer. It has the same libretto as Handel's Tamerlano. This recording got the best Artists nowadays on earth (Virginclassics). Fabio Biondi with Europa Galante has present all the details of this work. Only the DVD worth the price. Vivaldi had many Operas waiting for discovery Naive/opus111 got many Vivaldi operas CDs http://shop.castleclassics.co.uk/acatalog/Vivaldi___Opera.html ![]()

[#1262] What are you listening to? ![]()
