The 5Z4G is a full wave rectifier. Professional equipment, including radar, etc., sometimes required circuits in which valve cathodes carried large signals and had to 'float' at voltages well below that of the chassis. Glass-envelope '-G' versions of common types were therefore required. The metal envelope valves had to have the outer envelope at below cathode potential to prevent them acting as an anode so were at a disadvantage.
Initially, these '-G' versions were larger than their metal counterparts but with the introduction of 'pinchless', slimline '-GT' types 5Z4GT the advantage of the compact metal types was reduced to the point where RCA decided to phase out production in favour of (slightly cheaper) all-glass types.
Type U52 is given as an 'equivalent'. This is not strictly true although both types have comparable ratings and compatible pin connections. Type U52 is directly heated and will therefore provide its full output within a second or so from switch-on from cold, ie. before other (indirectly heated) valves in the set are ready to conduct.
The likely result is a damaging HT surge for at least several seconds each time the set is switched on. Type 5Z4 is indirectly heated and although heater and cathode are internally connected, the heater-cathode insulation is deliberately thickened so that the rectifier's cathode heats slightly more slowly than the other valves, thus eliminating HT voltage surges.
Designed to supply equipment of up to 40 Watts total power, this rectifier was made by several manufacturers. This suggests a very popular type, and one that found use in military equipment during WW2.
The classic envelope is 42 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 100 mm tall.

I recommended this when it cost $20 on ebay the time Tim sir running the deja forum.
If I remember correctly DJ recommended similar black bottle cousin from Kenrad.

Not many people buying and my last pair was HKD400 from Kwan's few years ago. same as on this pic.

This is not the best sounding tungsol round plate, being H top mica. The best one is circular top mica sheet. Which is even older and obviously better than this H mica one.

Together with Metal base Sylvania and Swedish 33S33. These are the best 6SN7 I've even heard. TFK may sound even better but not have a chance to listen to it. Just a wild guess as TFK's price is the first surge in 6SN7 market.

Thanks for gingers and xwh allowing me the opportunity to participate in the 50/10/12 gathering. The neat TL/10 is great value for money, a very musical amp but somewhat soft in bass like the Quad II. With the right tubes, it compares favourably with the well-known Radford STA25, excels in vocal and with more ebullience, failing only in the bass line. Matching with Colin's most revealing Tannoy, it survived the cruellest test against the 12.1. The dynamic of the 12.1 is clearly in a different league, in fact what else can be compared with the 12.1 in this domain? If the 12.1 is the queen of KT66, the 10.1 cannot even be regarded as a princess, at best a countess. Anyway, the KT61 is not really in the family, might be an in-law.

The Fisher 50C is eye-opening, extremely detailed and energetic, more so than the Marantz 7. It has a completely different presentation with the 80C from the same family. It's treble is exemplary but again the bass is on the soft side. When coupled with the TL/10, the limitation is amplified, but sounded just right with the 12.1.

A big congratulations to Colin, the improvement in his system is just remarkable.
