( classical mus Inspired by the hot discussion of opera, watched a DVD of Mozart's Magic flute last night, this DVD was filmed in 1991, costume was very cartoon like. I always belive that opera have to be seen rather than heard, I often get lost with the german text, after a few minutes. DVD have the text translated so that I can understand what is going on.  |

| [#1309] Beethoven/Rubinstein I don't always respond to Arthur Rubinstein, but I just picked up this LP and was stunned by the beauty of the playing. This Pathetique surely is my favorite now. His playing is lively, his tone civilized and the composer is welol served. Great piano sound on the Dynagroove LP too.  |

| [#1311] Lang Lang Lang Lang is a Hong Kong citizen now, however huis perfromance was not too well received by Hong Kong classical music fans, last night I take out his Proms Concerto CD on Telarc, in which he played Rachmaninov's pianod concerto No.3 and some short piece by Sciabin. Lang Lang was not the fastest on record, much slower than Argerich, he stress on the poetic side of this concerto rather than rushing it. However, he always love to exaggerate the contrast between the loud and the soft passage, resulted in unnatural phasing. But even compared with the great pianist like Argerich and Ashkenazy, the result he produce was promising and I am proud of our country in produing a pianist of such a high standard. I always found Argerich too rush for my taste, but her version was really exciting, Ashkenasy on the other hand was too slow, lacking passion which is essential to the music of Rachmaninov. My favorite out of the four versions I have was still the mono version by Horowitz with Reiner on RCA recorded more than 50 years ago, Horowitz combined the best of both world, it was therefore not surprising than Rachmaniov was won over himself.  |

| [#1312] Beethoven/Rubinstein 早晨... 週日觀賞了一只BBC黑白紀錄片dvd，乃Grumiaux 1965在巴黎和Dorati現場合作貝多芬小提琴協奏曲。 雖然是mono錄音，但無損樂曲的感染力。小提琴發音純淨美麗，造句優雅自然，發乎情止乎禮，美而不妖，哀而不傷，完全切合'君子琴'的風格；Dorati的伴奏也是心靈相通，第二慢板樂章的靜穆哀愁猶為感人，指揮的表現令人尊敬。 Grumiaux拉琴動作斯文，身軀簞妠T度微少，臉上亦無煽情樣子，輕描淡寫就完成了一闕千古絕唱 - 「毫不賣弄藝術的藝術作品」。 |

| [#1313] Beethoven/Rubinstein Oh Grumiaux, my favorite violinist! In German repertoire, he was second to none, he was even better in chamber music. I remember in his performance of Mozart's string Quintet, his sweet and silky violin stand out from the rest of the strings player, but he never want to show off but work with his team humbly to serve the music of Mozart. Other lovely chamber include Schubert's String trio, Faure's violin sonata, Beethoven violin sonata with Haskil and Mozart's violin sonata with Haskil and Walter Klien.  |

| [#1314] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Finally got hold of lp by Jascha Horenstein/Stockholm Philharmonic playing Mahler 6th after a long wait. Horenstein had the ability to elevate the performance of this 2nd tier Orchestra to an unpredecented level, making it sound like a top European orchestra. He gave aa emotional and passionate account of this 'tragic' symphony with structural integrity maintained throughout. Especial beautiful is the slow movement which is tender and rhapsodic. Though the recording sound is not of demonstration quality it is acceptalbe. Overall one of my top picks for Mahler 6th. |

| [#1317] Horenstein Mahler 6th The Horenstein Stockholm Mahler 6th appears to be OOP now. Strangely, the mixed Mahler set on Brilliant Classics includes his magnificent LSO 3rd, but not the Stockholm 6th (both were on Unicorn before). I have always loved this version since I bought it as my first version many years ago on bargain Nonesuch LP. Actually the Stockholm 6th has always been faulted for its poor orchestral playing! Now we have another version by the Bournmouth Symphony on BBC Legends: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2006/Sept06/Mahler6_Horenstein_BBCL41912.htm I'm very curious about this version too!  |

| [#1323] Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was one the greatest sorpano of the last century, and this disc was one of her greatest moment. In these opperetta aria, she bring out the charachter of each role, compare with Sutherland her tone are more colorful, but not necessary as smooth as Sutherland. The recording in 1957 was surprisingly good.  |
