Inherited another pair of Walnut Rogers (non bi-wire, early 11 ohm version) from a friend, along with a pair of VTL triode 25 (2 pair of EL84 triode connected per side). Also got 2 new solid state preamps and a new CD drive. Plus I have to change the output transformer of my SE RS237 to the nano amphorous material output from Thomas...And with so little time...:-( |

Too less time, Dr King just cut love his RME professional DAC to me. This is what friends for ^_^ and we had a happy short session on my system with this new DAC. He told this DAC can also set to replace pre-amp and digital electronic crossover and I finally need two stereo SETA amps and the RME to run 2 way active biamp. |

Since my last post I have done a bit of experimenting with my TL10 to KT66 idea. Yesterday I got my hands on a TL10 which had already been modified to run 6L6Gc's by Sydney tech Patrick Turner. Patrick is a realist and not swayed by romanticism so you know that if he has worked on something it WILL look good on a scope by the time he has finished with it! Anyway I tested it against one of my standard TL10s and indeed it performed well on the bench giving a clean 15 watts from 30Hz to 0ver 10KHz. Bias was running at around 45mA. I dropped in some KT66s and checked the bias at 56mA and decided they were safe to run. (It has a bottom cover fitted so I don't know what circuit changes have been made or how the bias is set at this stage) With the (GEC clear glass) KT66s it returned similar power but with significantly lower 3rd harmonic. The extreme treble was rolled off approx 1dB more however. In the next few days I will have a look into the mods done and test it with some good matched KT66s , not the random pair I used last night. I will also compare the results with my 12.1s. I've got a feeling there will not be much in it....anyway you guys will be the first to know! Now in answer to Delfo's question I suspect the best reasonasbly priced OPTs for a 12.1 project may well be salvaged TL10 units. I am sure a rough, non working and tubeless pair of TL10s could be bought for just a couple of hundred pounds which is not out of the question. Then again you might consider going my route - just converting TL10s to KT66s should give close to the same performance as TL12s and they will, at least, still be a real Leak. Just a suggestion.
