| [#13842] Pre el84 tube amplifier gathering If I have to pick three of them to the EL84 party. I will pick KL-V410, Leak Stereo 20 & Dynaco ST35 One day I bring my el84 troop to poison you :-) _____________________________________________________________ I hate to witness the holocaust held in the toxic chamber in Fei Ngor Shan yesterday in which 4 famous british and american el84 amps were slaughtered without mercy. The Leak Stereo20, setting the standard for el84 amps, sang with a smooth, sweet ,soft and touching characteristic. Whilst it is one of my favourite amps playing female vocal, I often find it too sweet for male vocal, making all male singers appear girly, except in one case when it was used to drive the full range JBL L44. All the other contenders delivered better impact and punchiness than the St20 but somehow none as smooth and sweet, except the Dynaco St35 which I found just right for both male and female vocals. The Eico HF86 was a big disappointment, failing all the others by a huge margin. The sound was coarse, brittle and irritating compared with the standard. I nearly couldn't stand for the full 3-song test session. There didn't seem to be anything wrong but it's just inferior sound, especially when its performance was sandwiched between the more superior Leak and Dynaco. Is that the reason why Dynaco made a huge success in Germany whilst Eico never made it to the deutsche land? The silver Pilot 232 had its left channel rang with distortion and could not finish the test. The gold version sang pretty well but still trailed behind the Dynaco in all sonic aspects. May be the brand new Jensen caps need time to further run in. The V410 is a class of its own amongst the other contenders. Music flow was driven with power and soundstage was much extended. It was the only amp in the group that I could hear cello sounded like a cello and the clear bowing of the erhu. The full frequency spectrum was much more transparent than the others, but for vocals, it sounded so transparent that every minor bit in the recording seemed to be picked up and made vocals presented in sharp edges that I find it somehow tiring. The Leak is more enjoyable in this respect. The host,with his high moral standard, obviously could not accept the holocaust and ordered the king of british amps, the TL/25A, to bully the little german soldier. Under such overwhelming power, even the Spendor speaker protested, I had to pack up and go. Thanks to Gingers and Colin for the interesting party. I have to say, all these el84 amps are excellent amps in their own right driving 3/5a, except the Eico. May be it need to be taken care of Eico experts, it must be sadly prejudiced in the Leak home. |

I took out all the tubes and put them back. The left channel is OK perhaps it was due to the poor contacts :-) |
