| [#1442] Western Electric amps and associated equipments I don't feel surprise when the Chairman of P&C appraised the sound of Gordan's 41a+42a,it is specially built by Mr Wu with as much as possible original parts(it costs a funtune nowadays),and disposed with those original trans that are limited with frequency bandwidth,typically, the OPT used in the original 42a is WE127A(50-6K), its replaced by the WE171C, the primary is specially wired to cope with a PP205D sustaining a bandwidth of 35-10,000hz, which to WE standard is exceptional.Also the two WE109A RET connected to the B+ before its going thru' to the 171A for powering the 2x205D plate is also crucial to the stability and smoothness of the sound both as a driver for the more powerful 43a and as a power amp of 1.75watts which is just sufficient to drive the 755A for smaller size music.In any circumstances, I still think the 41a+42a is best treated as a driver, it can drive anything as you please from SE 212D/211D to a PP252A/PX25 etc, its possibly the best driver ever-made in hi-fi history.As a power amp, apart from the fact that it does not have sufficient gas to drive a larger engine, listening experience revealed that it is smooth sounding but very restricted in dynamics,so I guess the current of the 264A/C tube is too low to hit the swing of the 205D which speaks of the insufficiency of dynamics of the 41a+42A which should always be the long-suit of WE amps. |

| [#1450] Western Electric amps and associated equipments From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Permalloy is the term for a nickel iron magnetic alloy. Generically, it refers to an alloy with about 20% iron and 80% nickel content. Permalloy has a high magnetic permeability, low coercivity, near zero magnetostriction, and significant anisotropic magnetoresistance. The low magnetostriction is critical for industrial applications, where variable stresses in thin films would otherwise cause a ruinously large variation in magnetic properties. Permalloy's electrical resistivity generally varies within the range of 5% depending on the strength and the direction of an applied magnetic field. Permalloys typically have the face centered cubic crystal structure with a lattice constant of approximately 0.355 nm in the vicinity of a nickel concentration of 80%. Permalloy is used in transformer laminations and magnetic recording head sensors. In its initial application, permalloy was wrapped around the insulated copper conductors of telecommunication cables, reducing signal distortion through improved inductive compensation of cable capacitive reactance. The right conditions for transmitting signals through cables without distortion were first worked out mathematically by Oliver Heaviside.[1] After a prolonged search, permalloy was discovered in 1914 by Gustav Elmen of Bell Laboratories, who found it had higher permeability than silicon steel. Later, in 1923, he found its permeability could be greatly enhanced by heat treatment. Other compositions of permalloy are available, designated by a numerical prefix denoting the percentage of nickel in the alloy, for example 45 Permalloy containing 45% nickel, and 55% iron. Molybdenum Permalloy is an alloy of 81% nickel, 17% iron and 2% molybdenum. The latter was invented at Bell Labs in 1940. At the time, when used in long distance copper telephone lines, it allowed a tenfold increase in maximum line working speed.[2] |
