Andysnoopy888, How much did you buy this JVC's Innsbruck version for Bach WTC? anyway, I now know the cover of this desirable album! Thanks! Trollope, EMI Toshiba reissued mozart sonatas (K310, K533 + 494, K545)live recording (1956) 2 years ago in the name of "決定盤 1300", sound are mono but very awful, not as good as his philips live albums. | [#1468] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Trollope, Thank for your innsbruck's concert poster, what a historic archive! I bought Ming Po Magazine (first time ever!) just because of Professor Lee's article, though not as in-depth as I expect. Trollope, if you shop in Hong Kong Records or bookshop, you must buy the March issue (2007) of a Taiwanese classical magazine "Muzik", that issue particularly analyses Richter's discs and his approach in an in-depth manner, it costs you HKD$ 160. For me, it does worth! George1977 |

[#1472] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Just for reference there are some very hard-to-digest rather exhaustive Richter discographies out there: http://www.trovar.com/str/discs/index.html http://www.doremi.com/sr.html I find them difficult to tackle. For me, it's much better to read something filtered through someone, like trollope, like when he tells you the difference between versions and his favorites. Another very simple one: http://www.culturekiosque.com/klassik/features/rherich.htm ![]()

[#1474] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Doctorjohn Thanks for your link to the discography of Sviatoslav Richter, I just feel confused and congested when different record companies issued CD for the same recording again and again, I unnecessarily spent some money to buy duplicate items..........Both links are great treasure to enrich my collection. I think that I better, as you said, seek Trollope's or your advice and comment before buying any single album of richter's works, otherwise I will bankrupt very soon. The following CD is a new reissue from Melodiya. its Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2, I opine, has surpassed its DG counterpart, Richter plays in a top form technically and lyrically with meticulous accompany by Sanderling, no matter how many times you listen, it never gives me fatigue and monotony, I just feel pity that I have no chance to buy its previous reissue by BMG, some online comment said that the BMG reissue adopts no-noise mastering which outperform this Russian reissue, is it true? Does anyone have this BMG reissue? Anyway, highly recommended for all piano lover George1977 ![]()

[#1475] What are you listening to? ( classical mus The wealth of knowledge presented here are really informative. Concerning Richter, I have to receommend his Chopin Scherzi, Richter sweep through these piano works with super-ordinary technique, and he yet he sound extremely poetic. This record was originally on Olympia, but now it was on Regis. ![]()

[#1476] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Hi Trollope/ George1977: Nice to meet you and glad to know there are so many Richter fans. I got it some years ago at $2,xxx. This CD set is expesive becasue it only issued once and it is within Japan only (no international issue). Also, due to some copyright problem, Victor cannot reissue again and so at this moment it is out of print and dunno whether it will be reissued again by the copyright owner. No matter what, I think the Chinese version is still worth to keep and it is not expensive. Below is the vote from Taiwan's fans and they also rank Richter as No.1 in playing WTC! http://blog.roodo.com/chiu719/archives/2600349.html

[#1477] What are you listening to?

[#1480] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night listen to Mozart horn concertos played by Dennis Brain and Karajan with the Philmonia Orchestra recorded in 1954. Brain was considered the best Mozartian of his generation and this record showed that the claim was not unjustified. His playing was natural and spontaneous with flair and freshness, while the accompaniment by Karajan was surprisingly natural and simple with none of the meticulous smoothness of his later years.

[#1481] What are you listening to? ( classical mus For Richter his Rach 2, Liszt concertos, sonata in B mionr, Beethoven concerto 1&3, Apassionata sonata, Bach WTC, and Schubert Wanderer Sonata are all my definitive version, other pianists are a distant second. I cannot think of any other pianist with so much virtues combined, technicality, virtuousity, musicality, and inspiration, with the broadest of repertoir, from Bach to Prokofiev, from solo to chamber to concerto.

[#1482] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Hello George1977, Any richter "must-buy" item you can recommend? Really eager to know! > What a formidable task! Your request leaves me as deeply flattered as I am effectively flattened. The fact is, I'm too far away from obtaining all the Richter CDs I hope to call my own to be able to come up with a must-buy list, my friend. Besides, it takes time, quality time, to listen and re-listen to version after version. Certainly I'm happy to oblige, as it's a subject of intense interest to me too; but my time these few days is much taken up with works of other sort, which claim, as long as they last, a somewhat exclusive attention – but not so much as to prevent my responding to such inquires you may have about individual recordings, such as Richter's Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2. There are only two versions of Richter's Rach2, both recorded in 1959: (a) with Sanderling and the Leningrad Philharmonic; (b) with Wislocki and the Warsaw Philharmonic. Of (a), I have it on Yedang (released 2002), ABC Classics (2004), and Melodiya (2005). Of (b), I have it on DG The Originals (1995), Made-in-Japan DG (2004), and Philips (Great Pianists, Vol. 84). So I don't have the Melodiya-BMG CD that you said you were seeking, nor do I have the Melodiya-JVC version which should, I gather, be held dearer among collectors. This latest release whose photo you posted yesterday morning should be one of those recent made-in-Russia Melodiya CDs without collaboration with BMG. About BMG's "NoNoise" CDs in which you take interest, I have several discs using this technology from Sonic Solutions, including a Richter from Melodiya-BMG's "Russian Piano School, Vol.6" (1995). My impression is that they are definitely far from noise free, and I wonder how it can possibly be, the reason obviously being that (as you have mentioned earlier thank you) one can't have the music but not the birds. But then my opinion is of little import, mainly because that wretched audio equipment that I have is hardly reliable. You will still want to listen to one of those "NoNosie" CDs to pass your own judgment. To come back to the subject of the Sanderling vs the Wislocki, I am afraid I have to beg to differ, slightly, as I find myself often enjoying the Wislocki more. While Sanderling (an East German) may be more magisterial, naturally beautiful and thus a source of enduring joy, I like the richness of emotional range in the Wislocki (a Pole) – immediate and exciting without being larger-than-life. No doubt the rendition is uncouth at times. But this is the reading that makes me feel like melancholy falling from heaven like a weeping cloud, and that it is a sweet sensation to be half in love with easeful death. In great love, one must continually die and be resuscitated. Thank God I am not too old to believe in that! In any event, the Melodiya mono version is quite dreadfully recorded and so it wouldn't seem to be safe to recommend it to a non-Richter aficionado. (The Yedang version is an improvement on the Melodiya from which it originates, via Pipeline Music.) You may have read in Monsaingeon's book that Richter twice said that he himself enjoyed the Wislocki version very much (pp. 247 & 317). But then I can see why many people especially the connoisseurs have no difficulty in preferring the Sanderling one. De gustibus non est disputandum. BTW, yesterday I posted a photo of another Richter CD in the 書房讚嘆區, a thread I often frequent, either as a visitor or as a contributor. (My apologies to Chankaiming for no.1 having written too long which does not seem to be in line with the spirit of this thread, and no.2 barging in to talk about the music not I am listening to at the moment.) ![]()

[#1484] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Trollope and KH33 Thanks for your both suggestion and reminder. Trollope, your fervent review of Richter's playing of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 is in-depth and thought-provoking. I shall contact you via email to enquire a single album which I am interesting of. I like Wislocki version too and own both DG original (447-4202) and its Japan LP-sleeve-like reissue (UCCG-9518), the Japanese reissue is far more warm and transparent in terms of sonic quality. I must admit that my preference to Mravinsky's version (Melodiya) is simply because of its original russian season and the legitimacy of Leningrad Philharmonic, the melancholic and sad feeling simply touch my soul and heart as if I am reading Rachmaninov's self-confession, though the sound quality is undeniably inferior to DG's reissue. The more I listen this recording, the more I admire Richter's insight! Listening to Richter's 1977 Salzburg recital, his portrait of debussy makes me day-dreaming, hee hee! ![]()

[#1485] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Beethoven Violin Concerto / Kreutzer Sonata Isabelle Faust Alexander Melnikov Jiri Belohlavek The Prague Philharmonia Orchestra Exciting playing with monumental tempo and slavish excitement, Faust's playing may not match to Oistrakh's warmth, Heifetz's virtuosity and Scneiderhan's grandeur, yet her operatic and uplifting expression, I opine, has outperformed many contemporary violinists! Kreutzer's Sonata is also greatly played with a sense of attack and crystal-like crisp, wonderful! Highly Recommended! George1977 ![]()
