| [#1670] Opera and Vocal A good beginner Puccini box set from French EMI: http://shopping.yahoo.com/p___1921954428?d=product&id=1921954428&clink=dmmu&subpage=reviews& Includes excerpts from La Boheme (Gedda/Freni), Butterfly (De Los Angeles/Bjorling), Turandot (Caballe/Carreras), Manon (Caballe/Domingo) and Tosca (Scotto/Domingo). Not bad And it is only $9x for 5 CDs. Can be found at Pro Sound etc. While you are at it, this 5-CD budget box series also has many gems: -Mendelssohn chamber music (Cherubini qr, Tortelier, Chung, Previn etc etc), absolutely a delight and rare. -Chopin box and Liszt box (Cziffra). Controversial but undeniably interesting. -Liszt symphonic poems (Mazur). Music making of real stature. -Debussy box and Satie box (Ciccolini). Debussy would be a starter kit. -Many others, all quite good. |

| [#1672] Opera and Vocal Yes, this is indeed bad for a beginner maybe! Absence of libretto is also true for the other 2for1 2CD sets like the Magic flute mentioned. True also for all Decca 2fers. But those have a synopsis. And yes one more thing, all these French EMI sets have FRENCH notes only!!!!! So definitely not good for first timers. Thanks for reminding me. |
