| [#17037] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user that is the picture. the side was rusty and you painted them. if the polish is conductive, you will short the laminations. ----------------------------- For those who do not yet know what was actually meant by the above statement, it should be elaborated. Laminates are sheets of steel cut into "E" and "I" (or other shapes for other types of transformers). The sort of steel sheets that are good for making transformers should satify two basic requirements: (a) highly permeable to magnetic flux to contain as much magnetic energy as possible, and (b) highly resistive to electricity so that localized electric current on one laminate (due to cutting magnet flux by the laminate) cannot flow to the other laminate, and eventually, short the circuit to consume and waste magnetic energy. For the purpose of (b), the common laminate, Z11, for example, for power supply transformers has a layer of oxide (grey in colour) on both sides of it. The metal oxide is non-conductive of electricity. When rested laminates are cleaned, the metal part of laminates is exposed. If shoe polish actually conducts electricity, all the laminates are to some extent short-circuited by the shoe polish. That power supply transformer will be hotter and the amp will sound like lacking force. That output transformer will sound poor as if the entire amp is downgraded. But of course, we should make sure if shoe polish or another substance used in restoration is also good for purposes other than cosmetic. Cheers!  |

BTW, are you sure the shoe polish conducts electricity? I always see there is a "IF" in your sentences, i.e. If shoe polish actually conducts electricity...etc. You know, my heart is not as strong as my body looks. And you know I am quite proud of my 25A. Apart from emphasizing my method is innovative, please don't scare me :-) Anyways, I am still grateful to you for your sharing :-) |
