| [#1769] What r u listening to? ( classical music) Morning, Thank George for giveing me the Andante issue of Beethoven's piano concerto No 5 played by Gulda and Szell. Their playing was very exciting indeed, their pace was fleet from the very beginning, they stress on the classical side of Beethoven. Gulda's touch was solid and firm, while Vienna philharmonic played with discipline under the baton of Szell. This is a playing under Toscanini's style, all in all, their playing depicted a young and Fiery `Emperor'. If I have to chose one emperor concerto that I really love, I will not hestitate to pick out Arrau digital remake with Colin Davis. Arrau's playing was majestic and sensitive, he also enjoyed expert accompany by Colin Davis and wonderful clear recording by Philips. His version still compared favoritably with the fresh playing of Aimard/ Harnoncourt, thoughtful playing of Kovacevich/ Davis, and now the urgent, fiery and disciplinary palying of Gulda/Szell. ![]() |

| [#1770] What r u listening to? ( classical music) limage remarked that all of you classical fellows are quite 斯文, but left me in a separate "unpredictable" category due to my "darkside" (in hifi only, due to the lagre # of 混吉佬) :-) ______________________________ I guess because many of the friends here were to meet with each other for the first time that doctorjohn, whlee, kh33 and myself (who are old friends already) did appear slightly at odds with the other end of the spectrum, a thoroughbred gentleman chankaiming. When we have more gatherings in the future, we should be able to mix fairly well since we share deeply a common interest in music. None of us in fact behaved like 混吉佬 , and much less so lym, who did not even make his appearance! xxxxxxxx CKM’s system was a little woolly upon first impression and yet that did not seem to adulterate the Tannoys of their intrinsic musicality. The second movement of Brahm’s Violin Concerto helped to clarify this beyond doubt. A little more dynamic contrast, however, might be desirable to bring more life and vitality to the overall performance. I have been particularly impressed with the elaborate way by which CKM stores his CDs, a method that should merit anyone’s serious consideration. |

| [#1771] What r u listening to? ( classical music) For Beethoven's piano concerto No 5, I have listend to a few passages played by Horowitz in car radio, very impressive indeed. I would like to look for a CD or LP. Without a serious search, I have not encountered one yet. And I also like the 1st and 2nd movements of this one. ![]() |

| [#1775] What r u listening to? ( classical music) Erictang: Morning Gentlemen! As far as I know, Horowitz played Beethoven's with Fritz Reiner (whom I admire most among a folk of Hungarian conductors) and RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra in 1952, a mono recording which has better sonic quality than its previous account in EMI (mono as well!) (Does anyone know Horowitz play this piece in stereo?) This version is fervently played with Horowitz's unique nuance, passion and color, it's no longer a legitimate german-school interpretation like Arrau or Kempff, a much much idiosyncratic account with fire and lots of rubato, yet Reiner accompanied him very well indeed. Just like his schubert's D960 sonata, he was reluctant to approve the issue by virtue of its 20% schubert but 80% Horowitz, re-creation of work already! Naxos reissue has been my top choice among other reincarnation (Urania, RCA) because its remaster engineer didn't remaster the work by aggressive approach nor overdue noise-reduction techonology, harmonic and original tone in music has been preserved intact, a best-buy indeed! If you want to listen the CD before purchasing it (to reconfirm whether exactly the one you listened before in car radio), please give me a call via pm. send you a CDR first! | [#1776] What r u listening to? ( classical music) A heavy-footed approach by Klemperer (with Philharmonia Orchestra) with refined beauty rendered by arrau in 1958, an indispensable account for Beethoven music lover, an olympic-race competition between Klemperer and Arrau. Sonic quality is not first rate but musically satisfying!! ![]() |

| [#1777] What r u listening to? ( classical music) My personally favourite emperor, apart from Arrau's account. Michelangeli and Giullini gave us a lyrically romantic and tender interpretation with edge and superb fingerwork. Second movement is simply Unforgettable! ![]() |

| [#1778] What r u listening to? ( classical music) Since we're on the Emperor, I totally agree that the Arrau/Davis is a jewel, freer and more spontaneous than the earlier version. I also agree the Horowitz/Reiner ranks as one of the greatest versions. Naxos pairing it with the Rach 3 makes it a MUST buy. I also agree with george1977's stand on restoration and noise reduction. I like Naxos and Pearl. The worst is the EMI CEDAR process, which kills the sparkle in the music. |

I like his playing in Melodiya's account of Beethoven Choral Fantasy (sung in Russian, trill in the text is miraculously played!), my favourite! george1977 |

| [#1785] What r u listening to?
