[#1869] Any classical fans here?
Some of you may not know that Sutherland in fact NEVER sang the role of Turandot in any public performances in her life, even though she was totally capable (she has a very big dramatic voice). Of course this is a wise choice as if she had done it she might weaken her ability to sing florid passages. For other comments please refer to my past message on p.45.

I like Maazel's conducting here. Although his generally slow tempo might slow down the dramatic pulse, he successfully brought out the colorful Puccianian orchestration with VPO's brilliant sound. Marton's voice was ugly (she was at her prime in this recording) but her powerful interpretation of an icy-cold princess is unique. Carreras was at his prime too, very noble and sensational performance. The Liu was Ricciarelli, who was already suffering from Karajan's excessive pushing, sang in great style but a touch little rough voice. I would say she was more than okay, but should have been better if Karajan didn't treat her that way. The Ping/Pang/Pong did some very untidy ensemble singing. This recording is edited from a series of live recordings, so it's dramatically very satisfying but plagued by stage noises.
