[#1867] What are you listening to? Today we celebrate the birthday of Gustav Holst. It's only fair to pay him tribute by playing his magnum opus conducted by himself. The Planets was originally scored for a piano duet and the later orchestration was heavy influenced by Stravinsky. ![]()

[#1868] What are you listening to? cpsjj: Morning! I am fascinated of your rich collection for Stravinsky' Firebird (doctorjohn just told me that you have almost over 20,000 CDs at home, awesome!) and your knowledge about classical music. This Holst vintage recording conducted by holst himself is extremely rare, at least I haven't seen before in HK. How does it sound? wondering! Apart from Boult's definite version (EMI), my favourite also include Karajan's account of playing holst "The planets" with VPO, string and woodwind are warm and lush, a first-rate sonic quality where Decca always promises. Another account I like most to play is Tomita's transcription playing the planets by synthesizer, quirky sound but a "must" for those alternative electronica fans ! ![]()

[#1871] What are you listening to? george1977, Holst was not a regular conductor of professional orchestras and he never achieved the mastery of technique of conducting. Yet his passionate to get exactly the results that he wanted on recording helped to put in the tremendous vitality that was exhibited in his recorded performances. He had made 2 recordings on Planets, one in acoustic era as shown and the other one in the age of electrical recording, reissued by EMI. Somehow the later one sounds flat and claustrophobic and even the performance seems unsettled with a hurried tempi. The acoustic one is tonally more balanced and more involving in general. Don't expect the impact of the 5 beat rhythm of the Mars as delivered by modern recordings, but I cherish these as "authentic" interpretations. My Planets. ![]()

[#1875] What are you listening to? cpsjj, Your collection is probably the biggest I have ever seen. For Holst's planet, I have only two versions, one by Boult on EMI, the other by Lloyd-Jones on Naxos which also include a additional movement: Pluto the renewer written by Colin Matthews. Although Pluto was no longer ranged as Planets by Astronomer, this movement was interesting and worth aquiring. ![]()

[#1876] What are you listening to? Last night continue listening to symphony NO 2& 4 by Cluytens, I am starting to wonder why this set was not better know, was it due to the fact that it was issued by EMI france? or simply because the conductor was not Karajan. Beethoven symhony No.2&4 once again flow with fluency and energy, the playing actually reminded me of Carlos Kleiber, which is a very high praise indeed. I have other version by Wand, Klemperer and Zinman. Wand and Klemperer are similiar in style, they played with and steady and firm pace and stress on the structural side of Beethoven symphony, Zinman was semi` historical informed' and played with fast pace and transparent orchestration. Clutyens don't have the weight of Klemperer and Wand but his account were lively fluent and colorful. ![]()

[#1877] What are you listening to? In fact, Andre Cluytens is highly acclaimed in Japan (same for Samson Francois) and its Beethove Cycles was actually realeased in CD version as early as 1988 (in Japan only, not available in international edition catalogue at that time). They became more well known after international version put it under Beethoven 50 CDs box set and the previosuly released 5CDs bargain box set. In the first issue of 愛樂 which talk about the best complete beethoven Sym cycle, many writer select Cluytens as the best (may be just at par with Furt and Klemperer).

[#1878] What are you listening to? CKM: As much as I know, Cluyten's account of beethoven "Pastoral" is one of the best accounts, excerpt Bohm (DG), Klemperer (EMI) and Walter (Sony), a miraculous chemical reaction betwwen BPO and Cluyten renders us a warm, pleasant and spontaneous performance with lots of legato and modest tempo, a "must" for those who like an effortless playing! ![]()

[#1879] What are you listening to? One of the best performance, note - not recording, of the Pastorale is Carlos Kleiber's 1983 live recording with the Bavarian State Orchestra, which in my opinion, the only one that rivals Bruno Walter's classic 1959 recording. The interesting reason that it is not a perfect recording is because the source of this disc is a cassette owned by Carlos's son taped amongst the audience; the original reel tape had deteriorated so much that it was deemed not acceptable as a source recording, even compared to a cassette, so the dynamic range is somewhat limited. Kleiber took a much faster tempo which rendered a breezy freshness. The Bavarian orchestra's precision is just magnificent.

[#1880] What are you listening to? cpsjj: Totally agreed with you, the "pastroal" symphony conducted by C. Kleiber tends to be faster than Bohm, Walter and Cluyten and the sonic quality is pretty poor (limited dynamic and ambigious orchestral picture), hardly believe that this is a live recording in 1983, I feel quite remorseful to buy it after listening no more than 3 minutes! In contra, his live performance of Beethoven symphonies No. 4 & 7 (Orfeo) are vigorous and breathtaking, a "must" for Kleiber's fanatics! Cpsjj, what do you think the sonic quality of these recordings? George1977 ![]()

[#1881] What are you listening to? Gentlemen: You can doubt the sonic superiority of SACD, but if you miss Kleiber's account of conducting Bavaria State Orchestra to play Beethoven Symphony No.7, a live recording in 1982 (a concert tribute to Karl Bohm indeed!), you really miss an excellent gem, apart from his another account collaboration with Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, both are much intensive and glowing than his legendary DG recording! Sonic quality may not be top-notch but well-balanced! George1977 ![]()

[#1882] What are you listening to? Dear all, Just pass by and learnt that the topic focused on Beethoven's 6th which is one of my favourites I thought Solti with Vienna Phil in the late 50 was also good, at that time he was working with the 'Ring'production and spared time for Beethoven 5th and 6th, he later recorded 6th with Chicago Symphony twice but not as good as with Vienna, what do you think? Walter's performance of course, without doubt, the best among all

[#1883] What are you listening to? I thought we are not going that much into the sonic quality in this thread, we leave it to the hifi people. :-) Yes, it is quite murky when you play this as stereo, more so when I played it with electrostatic. Don't even think about using a headphone! But when you play it on mono, it's a whole new world. There are lots of ambience to simulate a live performance and afterall, we have to go into the music.

[#1884] What are you listening to? Think you can still get the LP (if you are a vinyl fans) of this wonderful recording and listen to Klieber's unsurpassable charm, heat and full-of-spirit inspiration. Sonic-wise, I would say it is not at audiophile level but it does give a good lot of live performance feel. ![]()

[#1885] What are you listening to? cpsjj: Thank for your advice, I should better replay Kleiber's beehtoven Sym 6 in mono manner, try it tonight! I trust your comment coz electrostatic speaker is a trustworthy classical monitor for its tonal balance and accuracy, Philips classics and Tony Faulkner have been a professional users for many many years! Sorry! :) leave this to Hi-Fi freak! George1977

| [#1886] What are you listening to?
