由是，每當聆聽馬勒的音樂，我不由得建構起如此的思考進程－－先由尤斯曼的攝影作品到扥馬斯．曼（Thomas Mann,1875~1955）的小說；再由小說《魂斷威尼斯》（Der Tod in Venedig）中的結構敘事過程流轉到導演維斯康提（Luchino Visconti,1906~1976）為其所拍的康城得獎電影《魂斷威尼斯》；順序再由電影的敘事影像移轉到電影中播放的插曲，馬勒第五號交響曲中的慢板樂章。

因而，在扥馬斯．曼小說中流動的特質，是描寫著那中年名作家阿森巴赫在風光明媚的水都威尼斯，被一位具有希臘雕像般風采的美麗少年所迷戀而無法自拔的故事內容。如水般流動的特質加上作者利用柏拉圖式愛情的原型，作家扥馬斯．曼將此種情感衝突轉化為美與死的幻影，用獨特的文筆描寫下來此種，“關於肉體與精神的、藝術與生活的衝突”，也因而使導演維斯康提為其拍下原著電影，使用著馬勒第五號交響曲的慢板樂章作為其中的主要配樂插曲。

在馬勒（Gustav Mahler,1860-1911）的一生中，對於其音樂的精神性因素，多多少少都帶著出生地波希米亞的流浪而浮動的精神。馬勒的靈魂多被不安的情感與漂泊所佔據，因此使得他的音樂顯現出來是流動、殘缺與黑暗的意念，加上其所處的19世紀與20世紀的交替「世紀末」情意結，逼使他的交響曲帶著「世紀末」的悲觀與世紀初的樂觀情感。再加上他懼怕死亡的人世特質，如此種種更使馬勒的音樂介於生與死的掙紮情感中。

第五號交響曲是馬勒利用假期在威塔湖畔的麥亞尼希（Maiernigg）寫成的作品，和之前的附有聲樂的第二至四號的交響曲作品不同，第五號交響曲是以純器樂形式所寫下的交響曲，這是馬勒進入另一個創作時期的叩門環，此乃經由巴哈複音音樂所引領下所完成的複雜對位式變奏、卡農、賦格等作曲法的創新。樂曲中最有名的第四樂章，常被拿來單獨演出，那僅由豎琴與弦樂合奏演出的唯美樂章，可說是馬勒為了向其妻阿爾瑪．辛德勒（Alma Schindler,1809~1964）表達愛意所寫下的求婚曲，那時，他倆正處在熱戀當中，而這首交響曲，也因之顯現著浪漫主義的現實姿態。

在此，個人推薦指揮家伯恩斯坦與維也納愛樂所完成的現場錄音。對於這個錄音版本，伯恩斯坦顯現其一貫特有之濃烈感情，加上明暗強弱的大幅變化，伯恩斯坦掌握了馬勒音樂中那無意間散發出來內在緊張感，那種對於生與死之間的迷惘，甚至是愛與死的絕對精神相關問題，這些所有的感情，在維也納愛樂的弦樂聲中相互重疊、滲透。死是通往永恆的門檻，馬勒的音樂就像是要抓住現有的生命執著一般，他以死的神祕來訴說愛的永恆和無限，同時交雜著複雜難解的藝術深層的精神。當然亦有論者抨擊伯恩斯坦的詮譯流於誇張狂妄, 速度是快的更快、慢的變得更沒完沒了, 非常神經質, 極端個人化! 建議各位不喜歡此詮譯的會員可選購企鵝評鑑三星帶花的名盤, 由EMI 以24Bit 技術再版的著名英國指揮家巴比羅利指揮愛樂者樂團演奏這首不朽的佳作!

他的詮譯以不徐不疾的速度, 溫暖可人的音色及蝦s的風格處理而行銷四十多年, 是伯恩斯坦受非議詮譯的反面!

個人感覺, 伯恩斯坦把這首佳作據為己有, 藉@維維也納愛樂堅實的技術, 表達自己內心的壓抑 (不說不知, 他老人家晚年坦承自己與馬勒一樣都是同性戀傾向的斷背男)和對生死的看透, 難怪大師仙逝時, 此曲著名慢版(第四軌)被用作悼曲由紐約愛樂奏出, 紀念他過去不遺餘力推廣古典音樂教育所作的貢獻!.

Mahler is a composer of symphonies and songs, there is almost no chamber music, no concertos, no sonatas, no operas, no masses. Just symphonies and songs and he is the great successor to Schubert and Schumann in lieder. His most famous pure song cycles are Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (songs of a wayfarer), Des Knaben Wunderhorn (the youth's magic horn) and Kindertotenlieder (song on the death of children). One of his 2 children died shortly after he completed the Kindertotenlieder and he always felt guilty that somehow he was in part or in whole responsible because he had undertaken the work. His superstition is of course most famous in his trying to avoid naming his ninth symphony, instead called it Das Lied von der Erde.

Mahler has serious doubts as to the meaning of life which he expressed in his description of his symphony #2, Resurrection : "I have called the first movement 'Celebration of the Dead.' If you wish to know, it is the Hero of my first symphony whom I bear to the grave. Immediately arise the great questions: Why have you lived? Why have you suffered? Has it all been only a huge, frightful joke? We must all somehow answer these questions, if we are to continue living, yes, even if we only to continue dying. Whoever hears this call must give a reply. And this reply I give in my last movement."

Probably I have to think more about speakers placement and to listen with a louder volume.
The visitors today brodened my knowledge in classical music and Hi Fi, with two umbrellas as by-product. :)

以前買了二只 Black Box CD, 聲音都很暗, 這只 Holst 如何＞

這一款鋼琴版 The Planets 我聽來錄音很不錯，有聲有色，地產佬話齋：「夠光猛夠開揚，好盤泥嫁。」

According to the Gramophone (June 2001), "... the recordings are admirably clean, save for just an occasional hint of strain in the loudest tuttis of The Planets."

And the following is from the Penguin Guide (2005).

If you wanna to score high marks in mathematics examination or your hate maths, or you wanna to memorize lots of info in a short period, an experiment conducted by Califronia University in 1990s told us that this CD can enhance our intelligence and perception of human minds.

As far as I remember, I replayed Gilels account of playing Mozart Piano Concerto No.27 accompanied by Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Bohm at a night before my company law exam, it does helps me to get distinction! My genuine testimony....

Over the weekend, I listened to Beethoven's symphony NO 5, 6, 7 , 8 and violin concerto from EMI Beethoven Box.

My respect for Andre Cluytens grow day by day, his symphony No.5 was energetic and fluent, his No.6 was a masterful account, I especially love his woodwind which distingished this issue from the others. Cluytens' NO. 7 was more polite than Carlos Kleiber but he compensate with nature, fluent playing from Berlin philharmonic. While Cluytens' No. 8 compared favoritably even with Karajan.

Cluytens' collaboration with Oistrakh on Beethoven's violin concerto was much sort after by Classical fans, and I am really surprised that this classic account was included in this budget box, the only complaint was that the violin was not recorded in the centre. Oistrakh violin tone was creamy and I really love his romantic heart on sleeve playing.

Overall, the recording was spacious and and atmospheric, in fine analog sound.
